THANK YOU! this is what i try to explain to my friends who are for random reason so scared to criticise the show like its gonna affect their enjoyment of it. This was supposed to be one of the most exciting and highly anticipated episodes in tv bloody history, atleast for me, and all it was a pile of never-ending dissapointment. The battle against the Night King and the army of the undead, and non even one major character dead, not even one. crazy what this show has become due to casual fan service.

1.) You don't put artillery in front of your phalanx of Unsullied troops 2.) You don't charge cavalry, especially light cavalry, into the darkness against an enemy you can't see. 3.) You don't put troops in front of your barriers, only to have said troops retreat behind the barriers when they inevitably get swamped by a force with superior numbers. Whoever planned the defense of Winterfell obviously hasn't played Total War.
@TheOneBadAssGamer5 жыл бұрын
Not even the fact the Cav could see, you dont charge light cavalry head on into any force. They should be used for flanking maneuvers.
@necessarythoughts36055 жыл бұрын
Yeah when they showed the initial battle plans in episode 2 all I could think of was that the Dothraki were gonna get slaughtered and the Unsullied were gonna get destroyed as soon as the flanks of inferior quality troops retreated. I don't even know why they thought a pitched battle was a good idea. If they let the Night King assault the walls they would have had a better shot with full strength Unsullied infantry guarding them. They could of also used the Dothraki as a flanking/harassing force once the Wights began to attack the walls. And multiple layers of flaming spike pits would have immensly slowed down the Wights and allowed archers and the dragons to destroy large portions of the Night Kings army. Robb Stark would have kicked the Night Kings ass if he was still around.
@willk17565 жыл бұрын
Never send in cavalry without infantry support, against an unknown enemy force in complete darkness. Without support their slaughter was inevitable. Unsullied should have been stationed behind the barriers. One dragon doing napalm runs on the dead whilst they were delayed behind the barriers. The other providing overwatch. The trebuchets firing round the clock whilst this was happening also.

@Mad Max Rockatansky Everyone seems to have amnesia surrounding this. The white walkers won multiple battles and they won this one too. They completely stormed the castle, decimated all of the armies, at the end of it when the NK thought he won a master assassin who grew up in Winterfell killed him. They weren't stopped on the first resistance, what would have been terrible would be if the battle went Jon and Danny's way at all. It didn't, the only winner in that ep was Arya. There wasn't a shred of hope throughout that entire episode.

There is no such thing as a "lightning supervisor". Every person in charge of lightning is part of the cinematography department, and if any bad ligthning decisions were made, they would be blamed on the DP (Director of Photography). The whole darkness thing was most likely made at the color grading stage, though. And yes, as others point out, it was probably deliberate.

I'm a very talented martial artist with a lot of will, but in both Judo and Muay Thai it took me well over a year to get my basics to a solid level. In short, Arya is a Mary Sue. Apparently sneaking is one of the most difficult skills for mankind to learn, and she did it in a few months like that, ON TOP of beating one of the best warriors in the Seven Kingdoms with a butter knife? @@jeffm5991 Yeah Bran's line wasn't well written. We all know the characters are grey in this story, not black and white good or bad. Yet they made the NK completely bad w/no back story to give us, probably so they don't spoil the prequel to come which is idiotic as the only reason they want to put money into a prequel was due to this show and now they're ruining the ending because of it, and then telling Theon he's good is just not the right words. He redeemed himself somewhat by saving Sansa and then wanting to come back to fight to protect Bran, but he's not a wholesome good character still.
@ss-nc2dy5 жыл бұрын
The last line Bran said to him was great. The way he died though was lame because he did a major thrust in slow motion so he (and everyone else) knew he was dead. It was cliche. Would've been more interesting if a bad-ass sword fight happened between Jon and the NK and Theon came and stabbed him instead. Theon IS A PRINCE so it would've made more sense. You hate realism too it seems if you think Oberyn's death was realistic. He got an arm-only pat on the back of his knee... No matter how strong you are, you can't trip someone with that, only make them bend their knee slightly. Then Oberyn falls straight down on his back without rolling. Waits like 2 seconds before the Mountain casually grabs the back of his head with *one* hand. In that time he is being grabbed, he does nothing to escape, as if he's paralyzed. So the entire kill on Oberyn is complete bs. And people like you buy it because "his arrogance was his demise." No, bad choreography and directing was his demise.

Whose act was good and whose was evil? Which was more malicious? Which was justified? This is one of hundreds of examples throughout his literary work where good and bad are a matter of perspective. The hero of one side is the villain of the other. Another example is you have the virtuous paladin Ned Stark a man of principle stick to values and he is beheaded in the first book while little finger lives near to the end. People who's loyalties change and maneuver themselves to serve the realm such as Varis and Tyron do so much more for the book as a whole. Or as Varis put's it when talking to Tyrion, "he plays the game". Martin clearly is lampooning the archetypes and tropes that litter fantasy. Meanwhile, the narratives that survive the story illustrates the complexity of reality. This is why so many GOT theories have been wrong and baseless. They follow the same idealized fanciful thinking you find in the religions he shows in the book. They seek deeper meaning from a lack of understanding much like the religions seek deeper meaning in their lack of understanding a world with magic and magical creatures. I know this is a long winded response and I could go on for days while putting much more thought into this rebuttal. In the future I suggest you put more thoughts into your own.

The production values were incredible. It was difficult to see on purpose I suspect to submerse us in the confusion of fighting at night. The killing of the Night King was anticlimactic, badly written and a total let down. He was built up to be the ultimate enemy for a decade and was killed because Ayra learned to fly. He was never fleshed out into a three dimensional character and his abrupt end felt like the writers had no fucking idea what to do with him

It was difficult to see because there was no way they could actually film 500,000 soldiers fighting with practical effects. They all had to be digital. They had to be careful or it would look like that matrix sequel that turned out to be a joke as opposed to a serious battle scene. I disagree with the killing of the Night King. Came out of nowhere which is how it had to be. Arya didn't "learn to fly". Remember all her training as an assassin. There was plenty of time for her to make her way across the battlefield on foot, undetected using her skills she learned in that monastery thing with all the faces on the wall.

I thought it was fine, because the real tragedies are about to be hard to watch. Like Arya most likely getting killed by the Mountain. Don't forget the statues that were shown before in the trailer. Her statue is young. Plus I think most people for some reason give the wights pure free will of their own. They work in sync to the Night King's commands. He was sure the resistance was over, he was savoring the 3 eyed raven's death. He caught her because he noticed her with the extension of the wight that noticed her running at him. He turned and caught her.

Arya didn’t really train for 6 seasons though; Season 1: she has super basic training with Syrio Season 2: she’s a prisoner and gets no training Season 3: she is captured by the brotherhood and then the hound and receives no training Season 4: she is with the hound and she gets no training Season 5: she cleans corpses and floors but you never see her get any actual training Season 6: she gets like one or two training montages Season 7: somehow she’s as good as Brienne in 1v1 combat ... how?

How was it deuu ex machina? Arya killing the night king was prety well set up. We knew melisandre and arya had some unfinished business from season 3 and they would meet again. Everyone saying Winter came and went in one Episode forgot about the first journey North, how the Night King was taking babies, how he's probably killing wildlings in pretty small groups for a while, the Fist of the First Men, and Hard home. Winter's been here for a while it just didn't last past the wall that long. The writing definitely got worse since the beginning but they literally have no direct source material to go off of seeing as the last 2 books aren't published so I think they did a nice job with what they've got.
@plackiplicki35315 жыл бұрын
Suyash Gautam Well no, Winter was officially announced by the citadel in S6, and the events from S6-S7-S8 are relatively close to each other. Also, it’s a huge disappointment to see that the White Walkers, who were supposed to bring apocalypse to the point where there were prophecies of foreign religions talking about it, die in a single battle in a single hour by a stupid Deus Ex Machina ending and some bullshit about “if you kill the Night King, you kill them all”. The Night King doesn’t even exist in the books. White walkers were supposed to be a species of their own, and were literally going to bring continent wide war. Terrible writing there, despite a visually satisfying episode.

The trebuchets would have been useless anyway. Projectile was very small, not explosive (not sure if explosives are known in GoT world anyway) and it takes time to fire each shot. In that time the army of dead would already reach the perimeter. Trebuchets would have done very little damage no matter where they were placed. So their only use was to lighten up the battlefield just a little bit so that dorthraki could see where to go. And this was achieved - although they did not stand a chance anyway.As for frontal charge - in GoT world they had every right to assume it would be a successful strategy - such charges worked before for instance in battle with Lannister’s forces. I cannot imagine flanking maneuver in those conditions presented in the episode. Flanking maneuver works if you can surprise your enemy. Not sure if that was possible considering that the Night King had a dragon and could take a look at preparations to the battle. And in complete darkness it would have been impossible for cavalry to actually go around and not run over each other. Remember - trebuchets were in the front, not on the flanks, to lighten the battlefield. And any lights at the flanks would have been visible from far away, and there goes your element of surprise. The trenches were behind the army so that they were able to retreat and catch breath. If the trenches were in the front, they would have been useless. If they were not on fire, then the dead would run over it, look how easily they have climbed over the walls. If the trenches were in front of the army and on fire, then the dead would simply wait until the fire is gone. At least the trenches behind allowed some time to be bought. And remember, there was never a possibility to actually win this battle just by killing wights, there were too many anyway. Plan was to survive until opportunity for killing Night King occurs.

I was under the impression that the Night King could read Bran's mind so he needed to carefully lure him out without giving the plan away. By your definition she IS a MARY SUE, possibly one of the most Mary Sue characters out there. She didn't train for 6 seasons, she went from almost totally inexperienced to super soldier demi-god instantly. Evidence: Combat experience: Training with Syrio briefly, stick fights with The Waif Killing experience: Stabbed a small boy by accident, poisoned a pie, stabbed a few completely unarmed people. Arms experience: Wooden sword: all of her training with Syrio(perhaps a few months). Needle: killed several disarmed/unaware people, we saw her use it once, did not use for the entirety of Braavos. Throwing knives:0 seconds. Double-ended detachable knife spear: 0 seconds. Daggers: 0 seconds. Teleport speed: Wasn't fast enough to catch a cat. Leaping through the air: Not sure we have ever seen her jump. She goes from rich girl life to a few wooden sword lessons to sitting in a sty, to serving tea, to sitting in a cave, to sitting on a horse, to sweeping floors, to selling oysters to suddenly defeating Brienne of Tarth, one of the best swordsmen in Westoros, AND Night King, essentially a god, in a single stab. If you don't think she is a Mary Sue by your own definition you have not been paying enough attention to the story to warrant any legitimate critique nor praise.

Oh yes, we did see her jump - you know, after she was stabbed in the stomach multiple times (injuries that would've been an instant kill for any other character), jumped into dirty dock water, swam a considerable distance and was magically back up and running two days later, murdering an assassin that unlike Arya had decades of training behind her in an off-screen scene. But no, totally no Mary Sues here.
