I live about 30 minutes away and we avoid it at all costs. Crime has absolutely skyrocketed in the past 10 years. Sucks, we used to go there all the time. Unfortunately it's gone super downhill. We will occasionally go there for concerts or conventions or the rainforest Cafe haha but basically we get to where we're going and then go straight home lol

I was raised in California and moved to NJ fifteen years ago to work at a tv network. I've come to really love NJ and must tell you: come back to the shore during the Summer! AC is an acquired taste-- but visit other (incredible) places Ocean City, Cape May, Spring Lake, Atlantic Highlands, Asbury Park, Red Bank for a truly great waterside experience!

In the summer, the run down nature of the city is somewhat masked by the greenery, blue skies and crowds that visit. But in winter, the mask comes off and you see what AC is: an old northeast city, with a lot of crime and homelessness, wrecked by politicians and years of mismanagement, along with past casino-owners who bled their businesses (and people) dry before leaving. There are some bright spots - the owner of the Showboat is building an indoor waterpark just off the boardwalk; some of the casinos/hotels have invested money in refreshing their properties for the first time in years; Tanger Outlets are usually busy on weekends, even in winter. And in the summer, when the water and skies are blue, trees are green, and sun is warm, the boardwalk gets quite busy. Timing is an important factor in deciding when to visit AC, and what type of experience you'll have.

Well said. AC used to be a great place, but now it's struggling. I went last year and noticed that things are starting to transition into more of a family destination, rather than just gambling. Hopefully it can back to it's once great experience.

Also a Dave & Busters will open this year to reinforce the family theme.. The Feds gave AC $6 millions to start to rebuild the board walk.. Bader Fields development is in the works.. Furthermore AC's credit worthiness got an upgrade recently. The State of New Jersey is overseeing the city's finance..

As a NJ native, and someone who works in the City, you definitely came during off season. The entire vibe shifts. The streets and boardwalk come to life. As others have mentioned, AC is much more of an "adult" destination, with the majority of entertainment being the casinos and nightlife. You should come back to the shore after Memorial Day, but I'd recommend Ocean City (about 30 mins south of AC) or Wildwood. The boardwalks there have more activities geared towards families and are even busier than AC gets. If you're ever in AC again though, you should try out Tony's Baltimore Grill for some pizza, they have been on Atlantic Ave. since 1927, nearly 100 years. Best pizza in the city, imo.

If you visit much north to Monmouth County, NJ you will see a much better area….Sea Grit, Point Pleasant, Spring Lake ( one of the nicest beach towns on the entire east coast)…..these towns are gems year round especially during the summer. It's nice to see you in my neck of the woods. I live in a couple towns over and I have to say that Atlantic City isn't what it used to be. The expansion of casinos in other states really put a hurt on tourism and the decline of the city does not make it the destination it once was. Visiting in the Winter vs. The summer is a bit of a different experience as there is much more to see and do. I'm not sure how much you know about the town, but a few places you went by are some famous landmarks. The Steel Pier used to be the home of the diving horses that were featured in the movie "Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken". The lighthouse is the Absecon Lighthouse and I believe you can still climb the steps to the top. The cheesecake you ate was probally made with an Atlantic City Sub roll, which imo are the best in the nation. There are many other shore towns that are a better representation of the Jersey Shore and I would recommend coming back during the warmer months. Brigantine (which is over a bridge that connects to A.C.) Ocean City, Avalon, Stone Harbor, Wildwood, and the historic town of Cape May are beautiful and better kept! I don't know how much longer you are going to be in the area but I would recommend going back that way and visiting Lucy The Elephant (the world's largest elephant) in the nearby shore town of Margate and at least going down to Cape May to see the S.S. Atlantus (a concrete ship that got grounded and sunk in the waters at Cape May Point) and to see the historic homes and structures of the town. We also have an old historic town called Batsto in Hammonton that you can visit and walk through all year round that's about half the distance to A.C. Thanks for visiting. It was nice to see you up this way!

Hey Adam! Local here. I’ve enjoyed your videos. Definitely wanna check out this area in the Summer as opposed to now. If you do return, I’d highly recommend the Wildwood Boardwalk (one of the biggest & best, I gotta believe), along wit’ the doo wop feel of the town, & I also think that you’d really like the Victorian look of Cape May just below it, which lays claim as the country’s oldest seashore resort town. Thanks always for the entertainment…:~)

Hi Adam 👋. Definitely the winter and mid-week will affect the experience. But more than anything else, Atlantic City's success in the 80s and 90s was due to the prosperity of those times. Regular folks within driving distance had disposable income that they could afford to risk in the casinos, and AC boomed. Other than a couple years prior to corona, there has not been the kind of prosperity that can support a booming Atlantic City. People have to prioritize their spending, and for most, gabling is a lower priority. It's sad to see it like this. The 80s was the greatest!

Hey! I'm from NJ born and raised, I highly recommend visiting Ocean City NJ in the summertime!! AC's beach/boardwalk, in my opinion, has always been rundown and boring compared to the other NJ shores. AC mainly pulls in an older audience due to the casinos and nightlife scene, which limits its marketability since other nearby beaches like OCNJ are family oriented. OCNJ, my personal favorite, has TONS of activities day and night for all ages, and the island town itself is so vibrant. Great video!

Our rolls are definitely better than the one we saw you had on today’s episode!! You’ll have to check out Collingswood or Haddonfield while you’re in South Jersey - they have some great restaurants!! The Pub is really good, too - near Cooper River Park.

We get our Philly cheesesteaks from a franchise called Jersey Mike's. It originated in Point Pleasant, NJ, in 1956. It's really good! Glad they opened one up in our town here in Oklahoma. I'd love to go to Philadelphia someday just to taste an authentic cheesesteak. Enjoying your current series of vids there in the NE!

It is sad to see how run down the city looks. I was there about 10 years ago in the summer and it was not looking that great then. Hi Adam, nice video. AC looks kinda sad in the winter. Maybe it’d be better in the summer, it’s been decades since my one and only visit. You did trigger a different memory though. There was a sandwich shop in the sports book area of the then Las Vegas Hilton. It was very proud of the Atlantic City bread the flew in constantly to make their 9” heros. If memory serves as it was a long time ago, it was a delicious crusty long roll which made for a great sandwich. Maybe from the same bakery your lunch was sourced from?? I tell you, that sandwich you had looked great.

The Crunch of the Philly Cheesesteak got me! You went in bad month, summertime best, but again ALL isn’t what it used to be, I go to CAESars once a month for years on end! 21:06 Best time was before casinos when it was really tourists coming to enjoy the beach, hotels. Husband and I would go horse backing riding in morning on beach.. They had loads of Auction houses with chairs set up outside so you could bid on items, That IRENES you passed was a great little shop for fun items. Grab bags for ,50-1,00, Around the corner was a BINGO hall where I would always be shouting BINGO as I won 5 or 10$, GREAT MEMORIES THERE and still making in casinos, ❤️☕️🐿️

I tried Toney Bologneys there too and ordered the ducktown sub which was delicious. Love your video.

I'll give you my honest impression. I feel for you because clearly you were somewhat out of your element here, and it takes a courageous soul to try places that are the polar opposite (in some respects) than what they're used to. You took it in stride and shared your observations of the environment. Clearly you had not yet acclimated to it yet. I understand the acclimation process well. I left for New York December 21st and drove the entire way from Los Angeles. Stayed in some very sweet places along the way such as Sayre Oklahoma, Jerome Arizona, Kingston Tennessee which is where I checked out the 1000 foot super smoke stacks they have at the TVA Kingston Fossil Plant. When I arrived to New York at my mother's house, my first instinct was to sleep around 13 hours a day for a week straight. In week two I finally started to feel "normal" again. By week three it was time to drive back to LA. A nice town in Jersey that's close to where you were is Woodbury. There's a place there I checked out called The Nerd Mall, which made me feel like a big kid because it had a lot of my favorite childhood toys and video games. Not too far from Philly is Fighters heaven, where Muhammad Ali had his training camp, and is now basically a museum which pays homage to him and his legacy. Anyway, challenging oneself is the only way forward. I like the cold weather because it slaps me in the face with reality. But, it's definitely an adaptation process.

This, and I've always wanted to see a show at the Stone Pony, Asbury Park, and see the Quick Stop from the movie Clerks. I love the cold, but I wonder when would be the best time of year to actually come? The summer is a much better time to visit, or a weekend night. Most of the fun things are inside the casinos to do this time of the year like the Showboat Arcade (Lucky Snake), stores, restaurants, virtual top golf, etc. the boardwalk stores close for the winter months since it isn’t busy enough to stay open. the summer is very busy, I enjoy going, but it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

In all the years that I lived in Philadelphia, I've only been to Atlantic City roughly 3 times and the only thing I loved about it was when the Planter's Peanut Store was roasting peanuts and Mr. Peanuts was outside meeting everyone. When the casinos came, I hated the city even more. My favorite Jersey shore was and still is Wildwood, N.J. Even in the winter months, the boardwalk is closed however right next to Wildwood is Cape May, N.J. which is open and has all the beautiful Victorian houses with their gingerbread. I love this town. Summer and winter, this town delivers.

My Grandmother used to rent a home on the Jersey shore every year--it was the family reunion site from the mid 70s to late 80s. You could see the decline--every year more and more places closed, less and less vendors and hucksters lining the boardwalk. Casinos starting to close as they failed one by one. I think it was a simple thing--there were more and more options. When it became cheaper to just fly out to Vegas, or Disney for that matter, NJ just didn't look as good. Shows like "Jersey Shore" didn't do it any favors either.
