Junior as "President of Nascar" would be the thing that could save NASCAR from mediocrity. Wish he would do that. New fresh blood is the transfusion that NASCAR needs to survive.

I know this is an old post. But for what its worth. Here goes. I have watched this kid from the time he was a very young man walking around the infield of the tracks, having fun, interviewing people, talking about wanting to be a Race Car Driver someday. I've watched him race, have fun, watched as a nation looked to him after his father died to help THEM deal with his father's death as if there were something HE could do to help them. I felt very sorry for that kid back then. The struggles he went through, and NASCAR even looking towards him for help dealing with the loss of one of, if not the greatest drivers in NASCAR history. It was very wrong of NASCAR to put so much responsibility on the shoulders of one man. It was so sad to watch. But, through it all, Dale Jr. stood tall. He carried the sport on his shoulders even when he had no idea of what to do. I watched a very shy young man grow. I give so much of that credit to Steve LaTarte as he showed Dale jr some of the things he was missing by always staying in the track and never going out to see any of the things that were around him at all the tracks he visited. Also, to Amy. Between her, and Steve, Dale jr finally started to out grow the shyness. I get very tearful when i look back on all the things that Dale jr. faced over his career. And so very proud of the man he has grown in to. I know, not only because i am, that his father would be very proud of the man he has become. Its one of many reason's why Dale jr has so many fan's. There will NEVER be anyone as popular as Dale Earnhardt jr. has been to the sport of Racing. And it can be argued for years as to why. I love this man as if he were one of my own children, and will til the day i die. The only bad thing, if there is one, that bugs me about loving this kid as much as i do. It is that he will never know me or how i feel about him, or how proud i am of him. He will never know how much i love him as a person or how proud i am of him. I never had a hero, or was a fan of just one person in my life. Until Dale Earnhardt jr came along. Before him, i just was a fan of NASCAR. I would watch races and with 50 or so to go, i would pick a driver i wanted to win a race. After jr came into the cup series, He was the only driver i ever cheered for, and followed. Now that he has retired, i will go back to doing it the way i did before him. Maybe cheer for Hendrick drivers over the others because of my love for Rick Hendrick. He has given so much to this sport. Even the lives of him family. Sad. But anyway. I'm sure there are many who will hate this post, because there are so many Dale jr. hater's out there. But i don't care. I would give anything to be able to meet the man and tell him to his face what a wonderful man he is and how much i love him. To be able to spend a hour with him so he knew ME and what he means to me would be a dream come true. I can't wait to see him in the booth for the second half of the season. His insight and honesty will be wonderful to see and hear. Seeing him and Steve Latarte back together will also be great to see. Jr did great at the Daytona 500 as the starter. Loved his command to start. And was great at the Olympics too. Can't wait to see his posts when his daughter is born. Its been fun to watch as he realizes things a baby can do inside of mom's tummy. lol Funny. Love you Dale Jr. And thanks for this post.

I know there's an ongoing debate about NASCAR drivers being "athletes" or not, and I'll agree that they're NOT on the same level "physically" as the stick and ball sports. BUT, "mentally", it's probably on a higher level than any other sport. Regardless, these guys have to deal with with so much more outside of the "game" than any other sport it's crazy! The obligations, the time away from home, the fact that they could actually be seriously or permanently injured or even die anytime they get on their playing field, makes me respect them so much. Yes, they're driving cars in circles or whatever, but there is so much more that goes into NASCAR that most people just don't understand or respect. Thank God for people like Dale Jr who are able to "humanize" the sport and make it relatable to the common person. Great interview and his honesty is amazing. Thanks Dan for having these guys, and gals, on your show for the masses to hear.

Here's the deal-a driver looses around 8 lbs. during a 3+ hour race. But he's not an athlete because some fat guy on a pitchers mound got credit for that word instead. I'm sure his feelings are really hurt about it, having to watch the athlete John Daly walk around clubbing a golf ball. Hopefully, after he does a triathlon or rides 60+ miles on his bike, he can get over the hurtful, hurtful words....HAHAHAHA almost got this out. Oh, well.

Let me put it this way... I played football (fullback) in high school, and right after graduation, I started racing Hornets. One night in the car would whoop my ass more than 4 hrs of practice a day and two games a week. Hornets are mostly stock 4 bangers. Nowhere near the speed, g forces or physical demands of a Cup car, or even an SLM. You have to be in DAMN good physical condition to control a car that is doing everything it can to kill you.

I believe the best race Jr raced was the second race at Daytona in 2001! I truly believe his dad was on board with him because he drove just like his dad, it was as if he was on rails nobody could have beat him that day! now he has raced a lot of good races but as far as a race where he drove all out it was that race! I wish him all the best and they say greatness always skips a generation well maybe his son will be the next great driver and he will be able to bring Nascar back to where it once was because it has really gone down over the years and it's really sad!

This is why i cant watch it anymore. What happened to the days when the drivers worked on there cars, drove to the track, hang out with the crew? Is this what money does to people? There are so many weekly racers that would be there for no money just to make it to the big show. Now you walk through the pits and see a bunch of kids with no life experience, no laps just money. sad.

The thing is, speed costs money, so it comes down to how much can you spend. Always has, always will. That means there's always going to be pressure to spend more to go faster. The fact is, a guy who works on his own car with maybe one or two other guys and hires a pickup pit crew on the weekend is at too much of a disadvantage to be competitive

Everyone goes through different things especially during a person's "growing up" phase. Your entitled opinion. Me personally I think he is really down to earth, for someone whose net $worth over 300-400million dollars that is probably weird because he isn't pretending to be something he is not. The young man grown up now and his life wasn't gravy and roses & dandelions.
