I live vicariously thru JFK. A side note, Bruce has the words written on / taped to his left forearm. You can catch him looking down and reading them. I guessing this is before teleprompters.

Wow Dave. Fantastic score and reaction. But! I am so surprised this is the first time you are seeing this video! This is probably one of Bruce's most eighties associated videos. Bruce is so intense because he has felt the effects of the Vietnam war personally. He lost friends and even a band mate to the Vietnam draft. He was drafted himself, but failed his physical due to an earlier motorcycle accident. This song WAS played with horns on the Tunnel of Love tour in 1988, and there is even a video out there of him performing it with Edwin Starr himself! It was last played with E Street in 2003, when the USA announced its invasion of Iraq. If you're seeking intense and pissed off Bruce, look for videos of the Magic tour. Magic was an album that addressed the Bush administration and the Iraq war and the tour for that album was equally quite intense. Great, great reaction Dave!

One of the hymns of my youth, in the 80's. I remember vividly how much it meant to me at the time. This performance was my first concious engagement as a kid with the concept of war and its consequences. To put it in Bruce's words " I leant more from a 3 minute record, than I ever learnt in school". Bruce was my companion growing up. At some point in life I stopped listening to him, but It's nice to come back through your reation, David. Thanks for giving this such a high score. BTW, I don't know exactly what you reacted to so far, as I haven't given much attention to your Bruce reactions, but I would guess many of the performance you get to watch are probably recent, with an older Bruce. 70's and 80's Bruce definetely had a lot of anger and passion in his performances. We all get older, the passion stayed, the anger probably and hopefully vanished...

We got this 2003 in Sydney. The US had just invaded Iraq under President Bush. He opened the show with: Born in the USA War No surrender He was very pissed that night and the music reflected that.

I saw this video in 80`s a kid. At that time I was not too good in English to get all the lyrics by ear, but it was really impressive and impactful. I was also very surprised by Brice`s vocals - it was nothing like Dancing in the dark (per say). The rhythmic pattern was also complicated for me, I haven`t heard the original, I also didnt know its a cover, I thought its Bruce`s original. These days this track is really sad to be rewatched (for me). Because as a kid in 80`s we all hoped that wars are in the past. Turned out not at all. This is a great song and great performance.

In end of the "Born in the USA"-tour in '85 Springsteen started playing "War" back to back with "Born in the USA" to strengthen it's anti-war message. He kept it in the setlist for the '88-tour. In '99 he performed it together with Edwin Starr.

In 85 he only performed at the final four shows in LA but not back to back. They did close the first set back to back on the 88 Tour.

Nice score, i think it fits.. the boss derserve it, he do kill it here, and would i want to be in the crowd, yes.. so no doubt the song did what it should, and was performed very well, and its a good song, giving the message clear, and loud.. I also rarely heard Bruce going this hard, i think Born in the U.S.A is only other song i think of where he goes this hard on it..

First time I ever saw this video I remember asking my mom, “what happened to the kid at the table? Why is the dad alone”? It took me a while to realize…that was a powerful moment for me.

Coincidentally was listening to Springsteen on Broadway at his Born in the USA spot when I saw this drop - talking about among other things him wondering who went in his place ( he failed his raft physical because of a concussion) and if they were on "the wall" He has a few performances that could fire up your emotions

The guitar solo at the end was actually dubbed for the release on the „Live 75-85“ album (and btw. there was no broken string on Nils Lofgren's guitar, it's just a kind of band he tied there;)).

WELL deserved score. That was a damn powerful rendition, and I think you nailed it with the breakdown. And FWIW, kids, you don't HAVE to respect authority. Listen to some Rage Against the Machine, read A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn as a jumping off point, and start getting angry. Read, learn your history, and understand that those in authority, are not your friend, and are most likely not looking out for you.

Bruce hasn't performed this in Concert since 2012. I would love to see it performed again with Tom Morello.. Bruce Does have a an angry side. Post-Katrina: How Can A Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live: (The angriest horns ever) and We Take Care of our Own. But Death to My Hometown about the Mortgage Meltdown and the profiteering on Wall street was written in a style that summons Northern Ireland anthem at the height of The Troubles #StraightOutOfUlster. Those are all great. But nothing like WAR at the height of Reagan's history of saber-rattling before the Berlin Wall came down.

David.....please watch Springsteen "Born In The USA" from 1988 in Buenos Aires. Same intensity and IMHO the best and most energetic version of that song ever! Plus: a fantastic crowd!🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻

In 2014 he played a song called “The Wall” which was more of a slow, acoustic, somber song that also featured an angry Bruce, although it wasn’t in a forceful way. It was immediately followed by a full band Born In The USA. Oof. Powerful stuff.

I believe this is the music video for the version of this song on Springsteen's live boxed set. Springsteen was pissed off in "Born in the USA" too, but the chorus ended up hiding the message.

Greetings again eh!! You may have noticed there was no Little Steven. He left the band to go on his own at this time, hence the start of NIls Lofgren career with the band. Steve now jokes about it, how he picked this time, when the band when nuclear, to leave. In Steve's defense, he did organize the boycott of "SunCity" in South Africa, wrote the song "I ain't going to play Sun City", and had a role in helping end aparthied. Most I've seen Bruce worked up was the night in Detroit when he said "hello Ohio", realized he had the wrong place and dropped about 20 F bombs in a row and then said "every lead singers worse nightmare". I thought it was a wonderful human moment and Steve took a big peanut sponge and douse Bruce with water. Rock On!!!!

Bruce's version crushes the original. 84-85 was peak Bruce in terms of voice, appearance & catalog. He's brought similar intensity with Born In The USA & the majority of the Darkness On The Edge of Town album.

Funny side note, even though the band knew the song, Bruce wasn't quite sure. The verses are taped to the inside of his left forearm. You can see him looking at them from time to time. You can always tell something is wrong when he shows up on stage without a guitar.
