RHCP reference: This song is from Achtung Baby which was released 1991. RHCP also released Blood Sugar Sex Magic that year. ALOT came out that same year - Ten, Nevermind, Screamadelica, Electronic, Badmotorfinger, Doubt, Schubert Dip. In 1988, U2 were incorporating more groove into their repertoire. This was more American and blues influenced. Achtung Baby was created within the context of the band themselves pulling in multiple directions. Some wanted to go in a more Led Zeppelin direction, others were more interested in what was going on in Europe, and specifically Manchester. There was HEAVY influence from the Madchester scene (they had heard prelease of the albums that were to be released that year - some listed above). That is most likely where the groove was predominantly inspired from. The album is an eclectic mix of Madchester, Post Punk, Industrial and Hop Hop techniques sounds and aesthetic. The album cover is reflective of this mix. Up to that point, U2's albums covers were bredominanantly images that could be iconographic - a single subject, in a striking environment and/or pose/look. Achtung Baby cover was fulll of color, and a collage of images. But there was a dirtiness to the treatment. it was not bright and shiny and neon.

Lucky you! I turned down the Slane tickets. Life got in the way. Maybe I'm wrong , correct me if so, I think this was a few days after Bono's father's death and funeral. Outstanding show. Again, luck you!. Ya bugger! ha ha.

I don't think The Edge was inspired by Frusciante - rather Frusciante was inpired by the Edge . The Edge has a very distinctive tone based on Gibson humbuckers and Vox AC30 amp with a loud delay . It is closer to Van Halen than to Frusciante for me... . I love when he plays his Gibson Explorer and when it comes to Gibson players - he is one of the most recognizable players without playing too technical .

Thanks David, loved the reaction. I do like RHCP, so I'm not upset by the comment; however, I do think that the rift was just something Edge came up with on his own. I could see where you say that part of the rift sounded like the Chili Peppers, but I don't think it was "influenced" by them. The main reason why is because of the timing. U2 wrote this song in 1990. It actually was a rift that The Edge wrote for a demo called "Fat Boy", which he re-used that rift for this song. While the Chili Peppers existed at that time, I don't think RHCP had their major breakthrough until 1991 (with Blood Sugar Sex Magik). Who knows? Maybe Edge was listening to some Mother's Milk which came out two years before, but U2's typically not shy about calling out artists that inspired or influenced them, especially for a particular track. So "sounds like", I can go with ... "influenced by", I don't think so.

Great song. One of my favs from the band. And the meaning, oh Lord. It’s about Judas betrayal after the Last Supper. The garden mentioned is The Getzemani Garden where Jesus was taken by.

Dave, love the review, spot on takes on U2 as always. As a longtime fan of theirs though, maybe a little background on this tune helps - UTEOTW as a concept is a conversation between Jesus and Judas, so Bono laying down is just a little bit of performance re that story ending in death. It's also the reason why he gave a quick peck to Edge. Sometimes the imagery he's going for can be a bit obscure, but that's what that's all about. Glad you liked the song! There are other versions online from other tours with way better sound.

It was a toss up between this version and the Zoo TV Sydney version. Bono comes off a bit winded in this version. But the ZooTV version has all of the visual effects add in post at the end of the song, which annoys me. Seeing that it is part of the video from the DVD, I couldn't find a version of the raw edit. Because it was a toss up, both with Pros and Cons, I let view count sway me (1M views vs. 2.8M). The Rose Bowl, the Innocence's Tour and even the PopMart Tour had interesting live performances. End of the day, I have a whole laundry list of songs I want to get to. I put this (and some of the prior requests) up first, in the event that 4-years from now, when I have finished requesting everything, I might double-back and select another version of something I'd already requested before.

I didn't hear what you meant about hearing the RHCP until I thought of it rhythm wise. I think sonically this is one of the most influential albums of the 90s though so im sure you could hear a lot of bands. I also predicted your range was 6.9 to 7.1 lol

Great review. I saw this show and am ver familiar with the song and it's context and mesning. The lying down- was an attempt at theatrics. And you can clearly see what he's doing from upper areas. To your point though, he doesn't include that action in this song on subsequent tours I've been to.

First impression, I thought that the lying down part was a part of the dramaturgy and some kind of analogy: a face off with The Edge - getting knocked down, but eventually still being able to fuck shit up.... But idk...

They have better live versions of the song out there. This is one of those songs that illustrates U2's success though - the song sounds subdued on album compared to live. Most U2 songs are MUCH better live. They earned their audience by putting on great show after great show for 8+ years before "The Joshua Tree" hit. Granted they use a lot of production tools live, but man a live show is something else.

Good reaction David! Personally I love this track, and live is always a treat. If Bono lying down on the stage is a sticking point for you, then you must lose your mind with Tool live as Maynard is never (or rarely) part of the performance visuals!! Bono is theatrical personified (or at least tries to be) - and as such, I don't mind what he does - as long as it doesn't affect the vocals, I'm okay with it! Larry and Adam are one of my favourite rhythm sections in rock! Some might slag Adam as the 'weakest' member of the band - and while he's no virtuoso (say in the same league as Geddy Lee, John Paul Jones, etc.), he's as solid a bass player as they come! A foundational rock to the pace of the song. Larry is just a human metronome. I'd place this as a solid 8. Cheers.

From your perspective, I completely understand why you don't like it when Bono lies down during this performance. I think if you knew the background of the album Achtung Baby and especially the accompanying Zoo TV tour, you would understand it better. During that tour, and particularly during this song, he played a rebellious alter ego full of irony. That's why he lies down so nonchalantly. You can see flashes of that alter ego during songs like this. It's really worth diving into the history of that album and, for example, listening to the studio version of this song or a version from their Zoo TV tour back then. By the way, I had never thought of the RHCP. Maybe because I got to know the song in a completely different way. But I get where that association comes from. Also a great band, by the way. And as always.. a great reaction:)

The most fantastic thing about this song is the lyrics, in fact it talks about Judas' betrayal towards Jesus. Bono plays Judas and The Edge Jesus. in some live performances Bono, before starting to sing the song, announces: "Jesus this is Judas". A curiosity: in the disco version of the song, after a few seconds, it sounds very low but it's there, you can hear the blows of a hammer hitting the nails, presumably the cross of Jesus.
@MBeano
@MBeano 2 ай бұрын
On the laying down... I can totally understand where you are coming from with that. However, a couple of things. 1) The length of time is relatively short. 2) The song is loosely on the story of Judas betrayal of Jesus. In that story, some accounts have him falling face down to the ground to pray, before the Romans arrived. So the laying down relates to the story within the song.

Adam and Larry are locked by the years... and by the 1, 2, 3, 4 that sounds in their in-ear monitors during the songs. And about the production, in this tour U2 wanted to make a step back from previous tours. ZooTV and Popmart were mastodontic stadium tours, and this was an arena tour, I think this was the only outdoor venue they used.

As a U2 fan I'll take that but it's not really reminiscent of Chili Peppers to me. U2 attempted to make an album with Rick Rubin (as any Chili Pepper fan knows, he produced their biggest albums) turned out it was not a match made in Heaven, U2 is a very technical band in the studio and gets a lot of feed back and interaction from all their producers but with Rick, he sort of phoned it in. They parted ways amicably and had a great Beatlesque song come out of it "Window in the Skies", it was a non album single, pretty decent song (cool video). once again another great reaction dude!! I totally agree about "lying down on stage". It's not a good view for the crowd, there's a whole U2 live version of With or Without You and Bono literally lies down the whole song, great for the front row but sucked donkey balls for the crowd.

The video is a bit dated... but I remember when it came out - 23 years ago - there was no better show than this . Most of videos from that era have usually rerecorded instruments and vocals . Today a lot of musicians just play from playback to avoid rerecording because rerecording doesn't pass today .

This performance was a little bit of a miss for me. For this tour, Edge started using that 1980 Les Paul Goldtop with P100 pickups, which messed with the sound a bit much. It was originally recorded with and played on his 1975 Les Paul Custom with Tarbacks or T-Tops pickups. It was a lot louder. The P100 pickups in the guitar Edge is using lacks the loudness of the PAF and isn’t as hot or sharp enough to cut through the sound like a P90 would. I think it was a miscalculation if you ask me. Also, Bono spoke the lyrics. The original song was in E, which Bono has trouble singing in, so they’ve been playing the song in G for a while (but Bono still speaks the lyrics) and that’s why there’s no real chorus; Bono might have to strain his voice to sing it. The rhythm section did a good job, but overall, this version just didn’t deliver. This song was something Edge came up with when they decided they were getting away from their sound they were known for in the 80’s. The song was blatantly daring for them circa 1992. The original track definitely has delay on it and there’s a Crybaby Wah in the intro and at a few points in the solo. The bassline was built around Edge’s chord progression (which is a percussive E chord with some suspension play at the end of the bar plus some string skipping and octave work)

It would be better to react to the album version, live it loses a bit of Brian Eno's special sound and quite experimental production. The album doesn't sound like RHCP. It sounds experimental and very risky for what U2's 80's style was. one of the great bands in history.

David's reacting to the live version, because that's what I requested. U2 has been around for +40 years, so there's a lot of songs that they've made and performed. U2 describes themselves as a live band, with their intent focused on breaking down the 4th wall between the band and the audience. While I like their studio albums, I've also heard them a million times, and I enjoy the live versions much better. There's no way I can get studio and live version requests in for every song that I want to hear. While a few songs I do plan on just requesting the studio recorded version, the vast majority of my requests are going to be live. I wouldn't mind the studio version, but if they're going to be queued up, they will need to be put into the queue by others within David's community.
