For decades it has been the ultimate middle class aspiration - that kids crack IIT - because that means unlocking social / economic and even marital happiness. However of late - the entire dynamics of IIT and the opportunities that it unlocks - has been changing. In this deep dive we take a look at how much IIT graduates are being offered (besides the few crore plus offers) and why are pure science IIT graduates finding themselves without a job at the end of the placement season.

Making an episode about an Institute that you respect is not easy - tried to stick to hard data - that shows a worrying trend. Really touched with so many IIT alumni reaching out that sharing their story and the fact that too much is expected out of a IIT Graduate. Hope this episode helps in a little way. Though not many - did manage to draw a few smart comments that enquired about my educational qualifications ... not that it matters - but here goes:))))) Schooling - La Martiniere College Graduation - Hindu College Masters - St.Stephens MSc - Got admission into Boston University (but dad didn't have 40+ lakh to spare:))) Had the privilege of studying in the best school / colleges of India - But had to work my butt off in the media sector - no godfather - no alumni support - just kept up-skilling and learning on the job.

nah the problem is even after they are from IITs they take irrelevant courses like Metallurgical Engg, Material Engg, Ocean Engg, etc and stay jobless, they should choose CSE, ECE, Civil and other popular courses that are relevant in Job market. Although I'm a BCA passout from a Tier-3 college currently working, I'm lucky I didn't waste my time taking stupid courses.

I'm not from IIT, (ECE from Tier 3 College). But right from the beginning, I was interested in Software Development. I did lot of courses in the same, did projects, increased my rating in Competitive Programming. Finally grabbed International Offer!! With my experience, I can confidently say that, in the present world, you don't need an IIT degree to be successful. "IIT degree" acts as a catalyst for your success but absence of it doesn't make you a failure. Just focus on your skills, be a top player of the game. Your college, your degree, your grades, your branch doesn't matter. The journey is tough but sure is worth rewarding.

As a fellow IIT graduate with a specialization in Mechanical Systems, I can totally relate to the dilemma of whether or not IITs are still worth it. After clearing GATE 2019, I had high hopes of doing excellent research and finding a job where my skills would be valued. However, after two years of hard work and a CGPA of 9.5/10, during the placement, I was offered a position of graduate trainee with a package of 10 lakh per annum. Although this was the highest pay for many of my batchmates who wanted to continue in the core sector, I ended up rejecting the job offer and pursuing my PhD in artificial intelligence and renewable energy in France. I must say, it has been a way more rewarding experience than I ever imagined. So, to answer the question "Are IITs still worth it?", it totally depends on your aspirations and the path you want to take.

I failed in 5th standard, I failed in 9th again In 10th somehow I got 53% In 12 I got, 44%, yes you read it right. I was never a bright student. Somehow I managed to get into BSC computers (I was getting place in electronics but I realised, in computers I dont have to mug up/learn by heart as I cannot do that since childhood) I was good in logical ability and C/C++ After BSC somehow managed to enter MCA, brushed up my ability to write good code. Infact I was one of few students in my class (full of 70-90% throughout students) who used to implement the practical code programs and whole class use to copy it. Got placed in a small company in campus interview (as this company was not having any bar on academic percentage which anyways I never had) Now its been 15 years in software development and doing well and earning package more than 50LPA. I regret those wasted 2 years in my school, how can I be so dumb to not pass 5th standard ? Anyways ... Not writing this msg to praise myself, its just to say 'Kabil bano kamyabi jhak mara ke ayegi' and never ever feel demotivated in any phase of your life, believe in yourself. We live only once!!

IITans are successful not because of IIT, but because the students who go there are genuinely hardworking and consistent students. These qualities also help them in life ahead. People, companies know this fact hence they try to give these students the opportunities they deserve. Hence the hard working nature and consistency of the student gives them success not IIT entirely.

An IITian here. The content of this video is absolutely true. No doubt that IITs do office some security in terms of job, salary, quality education and networking. However the amount of pressure that students go through during preparation is not worth all that. I appeared for IIT-JEE for the first time in 2015, but couldn't clear it. I was so much depressed. My world turned upside down. I used to cry at nights. However I gathered courage and started preparing again and luckily cracked JEE in 2016. God knows what I would have done if I didn't clear JEE in 2016 either. Now when I look back I feel that I was depressed for no reason. Most of my colleagues and seniors in my company are non-IITians. And they are also as intelligent as I am (or probably more 😅). They are earning at par with me. If you are a JEE aspirant, do remember that going to an IIT is great but not at the cost of your happiness and mental health.

This new courses will be based on industry demands and the industry changes in every 5-6 year time. If you are skillful and your fundamentals are strong you can learn any thing new at any time. Please note, professional colleges are not a placement cell.

Darun bolecho Abhishek da. Being an IIT grad I can relate to this absolutely. But this is not just for IITs but for very good universities as well. People have a conception that if someone is studying in a reputed institute he will get everything automatically. However, people fail to see 70-80% students struggle to get through such phases. It is humiliating. And the present fintech and IT sector totally outshines all other sectors which also makes it very clear how our traditional sectors are lacking and soon with automation there won't be any high paying jobs, that's why if you see diploma college placement data in some areas they are doing better as Indian industries needs labours at cheap price, they don't need specialists. They are outsourcing it anyway.

As an IITian myself, I think one of the biggest problems isn't that of IIT, but the sheer lack of jobs for any other core field other than Computer Science (or maybe even Electronics). For the remaining branches, one may think that there must be some opening, cause if there weren't any jobs then why on earth would these departments even exist, right? But the fact of the matter is that virtually nobody in these branches actually takes a job in their own specialization (even if they do, it's because they weren't getting anything else). Also, as academics in IITs is much more rigorous and difficult compared to any other external institute, it's tougher for IITians that students from other colleges to study the courses from their own specialization, whilst also studying Computer Science for their placements in Software engineering firms. That leaves students from these branches with just 2 options - study in their own specialization and work hard to get a menial low-paying job, or some further education (if you have the money to fund it, ofc); or ditch their specialization entirely to study Computer Science for Software firms. Most people would clearly choose the second option, which works out generally. However, this year was much different as the global tech recession caused most Software firms to virtually freeze all placements. This has caused far worse placements than usual, as if we exclude high-paying trading firms, IBs and HFTs (none of which are related to engineering, btw), very very few companies actually paid a hefty salary for the to-be graduates. This recession has sent shockwaves even to junior batches, most of whom have essentially shifted their focus entirely from Computer Science to fields like Finance, Consulting, Management and Trading; none of which are related to engineering in any way. If anything, IITs' placements stats show that the domain of engineering itself isn't nearly as secure a domain in the job market as once thought to be. My prediction is that in the coming years, more and more IITians would join IIT just for the sake of it, whilst completely immersing themselves in studying Management-related fields for Finance and Consulting positions.

Being an IITian , I can say that most of the people who don't get jobs are the once who don't sit for placements and opt for higher studies. Also many students don't score bare minimum cgpa for sitting for placements. So yes , competition is even more after going into an IIT too , because everyone has come after cracking one of the worlds toughest exams. It doesn't makes sense saying if you get IIT you will be successsfull. You need to grind even more , and that is a fact.

Hi Akash/Team, The video is very true. Can you please also make another video on the research scenario in IITs. Focusing on how IITs are run like a cartel? Getting a job at an IIT as a professor is almost impossible. Also, the focus is always on quantity rather than the quality of papers published. The procurement of lab equipments is also filled with corruption.

Yes , the video is correct but I am also from IIT MADRAS , and yes only 5% of the students will grab the highest packages but students and parents as well as teachers should remember that the tough entrance exams were for admission into IITs and the probability of getting a job is simply result of one's presence of mind and the ability to handle all kinds of pressure

In 2020 I gave GATE Exam and secured a rank of 5000, and took admission in Jadavpur University. I thought that since it was such a prestigious university in Kolkata the course for Mtech in CSE would also be very good. But after joining I came to know that it was very outdated, and the main focus of the entire course was on the theoritcal subjects and the teaching method of most of the faculty were below par. After continuing for a semester I decided to drop off. Even the de-registration process was very challenging as most of the task was to be performed offline. Nothing happens online there.

As per a RTI reply by National Medical Commission, in the last 5 years, 64 UG and 55 PG students have committed suicide. 150 UG students and 956 PG doctors have dropped out of the college due to various reasons. The cost of medical education in India, the quality of training and the enormous amount of workload coupled with imbalance in UG/PG seats. I would urge you to make a separate video on this topic so that common people can understand the irony of medical education in India.

Many students go into it coz they don't knw wht other options r for bio. The field is highly toxic, interns r made to wrk like donkeys, and also the increasing violence against us by patients. No one is ready to listen.. Many of my frnds r contemplating of leaving the country jst for a better working environment.. Everything is soo mismanaged. I finished MBBS frm highly reputed.govt college, got good marks in 12th, topped in bio.. I couldn't clear neetpg and whatever I studied went into waste due to this recent postponent saga. And the added pressure of marriage.. I m losing my mind.. Despite working hard all my life since childhood.. I m here, a Grand Failure. I never got placed when I completed my Master's in IIT Madras, which even led to me being suicidal. It has taken at least 1.5 years of therapy to recover from that. Eventually, I shifted away from Civil Engineering because of low job demand. I re-skilled myself as a software developer (I was able to do that because of my privilege to some extent), to get a good job and even now I am underpaid, despite highly specialized nature of my job (requires competency in engineering, computer science and Math). I still wish I should have gone to Europe or USA or Canada. No wonder India has so much brain drain. We simply don't have respect for highly skilled employees, especially, but not limited to, ones from engineering background. I love engineering a lot and I think a lot of students too, but struggle for getting admission and then failing to get a job really hurts the morale of students. No wonder India has so many suicide attempts among students. EDIT: Also, there is a fundamental issue of not many entrepreneurs rising in India, for the simple reason that our education stifles the creativity of student. I think the reasons are far too deep than represented in the video. India simply does not know how to use the vast range of talents present among the students. For example, I always wanted to work in space agency, specifically to develop computational tools. However, I cannot do that in ISRO because first, they don't take experienced engineers (because they want to take only through an exam, which apparently our govt thinks is more fair and there is also an age limit) and second, the kind of work I have to do in ISRO is decided by my specialization and not my interests (because governments have decided a career path according to specialization without any flexibility). This further stifles creativity of people. That is the reason our research institutes don't contribute too much in any sector and research is generally stagnant, because there is no value to the new ideas and no funding for ideas. Because there is no funding, no ideas are executed and no new companies are created and hence, not a whole lot of jobs. Indian industries depend a lot of international products/companies because we simply don't have funding to fund ideas of our own. For example, the almost entire IT industry depends on international contracts to earn money, very, very few companies have products of their own. One I know of is Byju's, which provides a service of very dubious utility to it's customers, in my opinion. We hardly try to develop new technologies, products or services, if at all. Sorry, for the long essay, but the issue is very, very nuanced and lies in the flawed foundations on which education system is laid out here.

That's what I am saying people in India are wasting their precious teenage years, their most productive years of life preparing for exams. The main reason behind this rat race is the Indian mentality where people who get a government job or become IAS/IPS are celebrated like heroes and overhyped. Mostly the coachings do so. Well they have to make their business. If they would not hype the exam they are training students for no one would buy their courses, test series and study packages. This is all bloody business. The main point of stress in Todays Student is our Indian Education system , Our society says to us that You have to crack, iit, jee but they don't think what a student wants to become. So Students to live in the world without stress follow your dreams and not see what others are chasing off. If we take an example of the German Education System ,the student follows his own dream . Most of the jobs are limited to the IT sector. In IIt's, most students who prepare for IT companies ( Please mark my words. I wrote that students who prepare for IT companies, not the CSE students) get placed at the end of the 2nd day or 3rd day of placement. For some other branches, the jobs are a little fewer. But if you are targeting the IT companies and preparing correctly, you will land a good-paying job. Yes, skills play an essential role over degree. But this doesn't mean that degrees play zero roles. IIT tag can give you a chance to stand out, but how you will take advantage of that chance depends on your skills. I agree that IIT does not mean success. There are different ways also, but IIT still gives you something. In my opinion, IIT means something other than success. IIT gives you opportunities and the stage, but how you perform depends on you. One more point that I want to address is that assume that there is an IAS person selected as a cricketer in the Indian team. And he is not performing well in the Indian team. His performance is poor. So does retain him makes a good point? Obviously no. The same thing happens when you will get a job after IIT. If you are not doing justice with your job, then how you can say that the IIT tag should protect me (Don't take it personally, not talking about a massive layoff). This is incorrect to say that IIT should defend my job. Why should IIT protect your job if you do not add value to the company? One thing that I disagree with is equality. They do justice with equality. You should get some relevant information about the placement session in IITs. I am impressed with the placement sessions and placement guidelines at IIT compared to other colleges. In one day, there are two slots. And the company will get slots depending on the package they offer and the company's tag. A student can get any number of offers in a particular slot but has to accept only one offer in that slot and take exit from the placement. For example, If a student gets placed in company 'y' and in the same slot he was placed in company 'z', then he has to take one offer and take exit from the placement so that every student will get a chance and the student already know that which company came in which day and which slot. And most good companies got early slots only. So there is no point in participating in further slots. This will not happen when you first get placed for TCS, but then you will get to know that Google is coming. This will never be going to happen. Depending on its tag, relations, and package, the company will get slots. So there is no harm in taking an offer from a slot and taking an exit so that every student will get a chance. In the video, you mention that company 'X' offers less package. This may be true. But this needs to be completed information. If company 'X' offers less package and is not well-reputed. The company 'X' will not get the early-day placement slots. It got a slot after 10-12 days. Till 10-12 days, most of the targetted student gets placed. What I mean by the targetted student is let's assume company 'X' is an IT company, so till 10-12 days, most students who prepare for IT company get placed. Only those students left who prepare significantly less or no preparation for the IT company. I am saying that those students are okay in study. I am saying maybe they did not prepare for the targetted role. The point that I want to add is you have to make a good balance between the college tag and specialization. You have to understand the jobs available in the market for that particular specialization, and if a job is available, will this college help me get the job? Don't think I got the tag, and that specific tag will do every good thing for me ( This is true for all the tags, not only IIT). Many of us think that story ends when you enter into IIT. But the reality is your story is just started.

It is all about supply and demand in any sector. As a mechanical engineering graduate from a not so recognised institute from a small town and working as a marine engineer, I feel students must opt for courses that they are passionate about. Many of my batchmates from engineering college who did core branches didn’t get placements. Companies never came to our town. Somehow they felt that students from Pune or Mumbai are better. So all of ur had to struggle for our first job. But then there was no stopping us and today all those batchmates including myself are doing better than those who got placements.

In my time, i saw so much hype among students in JEE, but I was like I cannot do it, but still gave it and as usual didn't clear it, at that point, my friends and relatives suggested me to take a drop year and give it again, but my mind said not to give this cause i didn't wanted to. I was also from a middle class family and I had passion in the tech field, I got addmission in a nice college in my state which took admission on basis of jee mains (these colleges were not top NIT or IIT). And worked hard and improved my skills side by side, and because of my work and skills, luckily I got a placement of 19lpa. So I was thinking that if i would've given JEE, I would've got 1-5CR packages, but after contacting some of my IITian friends, i knew that my decision was correct and i did a good job by not pressuring myself.

Unfortunately, now the standard (In terms of Skill Sets) of IIT graduates has been degraded a lot and I feel very very bad about it because they are getting fired immediately. Their learning attitude is also not there in the industry because they think that they are the best because society and parents think so. To be very honest, after spending 10yrs in this IT Software industry, still I always look to enhance my skill sets and as per my reporting manager I am one of the extremely highly skilled professional but I really don’t know whether my job is safe or not in this global recession. I am a Btech student at IIT Madras, and for the JEE Aspirants watching this video, I just want to tell that there is no need to get scared seeing this, atleast for Btech students, placements and internships are pretty descent. Idk about the stats shows here but I haven't seen any of my seniors unemployed after placement season. Most of the people who dont get jobs usually are going for higher studies, startups and hence are not sitting for placements, or even if they sit they dont give tests. Also research opportunities are abundant, if you maintain a descent cg you can easily go for MITACS, canada or DAAD europe. and the branches like EP and OE give one of the highest median and overall packages. Believe me placement is just a tip of iceberg, idk about foreign universities, but going to IIT(any branch, as long as you are not aspiring for core) will be best decision of your life.

India and Indians have been looking at institutions like IITs through the wrong lens. Their counterparts in the US, like MIT, Harvard etc, are not looked at as factories that create workers for mundane jobs but rather thinkers, thought leaders and entrepreneurs who will incubate the next adventure, business, technology and will "create" jobs and intellectual property that benefits the whole country and humanity in general. Until we change our mindset and attitude towards these institutions and foster them to be what they should be, we will continue to see these transactional disappointments.

Very well said, Akash! However, I want to mention that intelligence is evenly distributed among all individuals, and it ultimately depends on how one utilizes it. I am speaking on behalf of individuals who did not attend IITs. I have observed many engineers who are preparing for bank jobs or receiving computer training, including IIT students. Therefore, one should not label IIT students as the cream of society because one day they may have to compete with someone who did not attend an IIT. Additionally, even Indian CEOs in the US did not necessarily graduate from IITs. Many obtained additional MBA degrees or computer training, and 99% of individuals working overseas did not attend IITs and earn similar salaries to IIT graduates. Nowadays, attending top colleges is not essential, but possessing a basic degree and expertise in a sought-after software such as AI or machine learning can take you to great heights. This message is not intended to discourage IIT students or their parents but to inspire all others. As Akash stated, skill-based education plays a crucial role in shaping our future.
