"Mera beta IITian banega" is a phrase you often hear in Indian households. The dream of becoming an IITian is ingrained in the minds of many Indian students and their families. The IIT brand is seen as a beacon of hope, a ticket to upward mobility and social status. Students spend years pouring over textbooks, sacrificing their social lives, and attending coaching centers in pursuit of this dream. But do the Indian Institutes of Technology truly deliver on these aspirations? Are they really that different from other engineering colleges in India?
In this video, we take a closer look at the quality of IITs and explore whether the "IIT brand" is just hype or if it can truly be justified. We'll dive into the facts and figures, and ask the question on everyone's mind - is the IIT dream worth the sacrifices?

the hype around this examination is in the number of students appearing vs the number of seats in total, for a general category aspirant getting into an IIT is a big achievement because of the competition and this is the reason why i have a lot of admiration for those who are able to get through, but because 99.9% of us are not gonna be able to get into it so there's no sense of being depressed about it either, life can definitely be better for a person who didn't study in IIT than an IIT graduate, so we can be hopeful always!

As an IIT Kanpur EE fresher, I'm not convinced that IITs don't provide social and emotional skills to students. Yes, freshers coming into IITs are socially drained people, but over 4 years, the clubs, fests, and highest independence of any Indian college turn them into creative human beings. The exposure you get from CEOs, film stars, and scientists visiting the campus is incredible. Just some time ago, HC Verma sir Himself came to meet us. The gender ratio is the only thing that hurts, though it has improved from like 10:1 to around 3.5:1 because of the female quota.

I feel that people who haven't gotten into IITs should not be disappointed, because think it like this way . Our population is huge and no of IIT seats are 1% approximately, so who just can't enter a college narrowly, must know one thing that luck didn't favour you but you have definitely worked hard. Just do the same amount of hard work in other institution you are choosing, nobody can stop you from being successful. Success has many aspects and many a times those who are roughed hard by life end up at the most suitable positions. Telling from life experience.

I think the main problem with our system is that we perceive certain skills to be 'much better' than others. If we were to randomly ask students which profession they would want to choose for themselves, most of them would choose from engineering, medicine, legal practice, chartered accountancy, civil services, etc. There is nothing wrong with these careers. The problem lies in the fact that students are opting for these professions not because of their genuine interests in these fields, but because they feel that other fields are not even an option. Naturally, if you get into a field in which you are not genuinely interested, and on top of that, if you see that as the only means to improve your life, then mediocrity and frustration is natural. One cannot deliver anything in such a situation, be it an IITian or a non-IITian.

I can speak for the education part in Physics dept: Almost every prof is very good in their research area. However, it is not often the case that they are also good at teaching. In fact, majority of students don't wanna attend classes because its often the case that the content is way too rigorous (often the case in physics). Also, due to so many years of experience in their fields, profs assume we know certain things, hence while teaching such rigourous stuff they often skip some imp. concepts. However, excellent profs do exist. These are pure legends and you wouldn't wanna a single class. So, overall its like any generic case (with very less spoon feeding). For the comment that "since research is good we would be taught latest stuff".... Nooooo, this is not necessarily true. A standard curriculum is followed for any course. So, its kinda like monotonous. If you wanna know latest stuff, you have to go out of your way to ask the prof how the things that are taught are related to the latest research.

Today after 15 year - I proud of my decision and i am doing much better than many who wanted to be the high grader.

I would disagree that there is a lack of social and emotional skills. we have special classes and tutorials for communication skills and psychology wherein we present and participate with many students(from different state and culture ,i myself have friends from almost 16 states). there are so many clubs in iit roorkee and participating in them has helped me a lot . Also it is compulsory to join NCC NSO OR NSS in iit . so i would like to say that for me iit has helped me in improving my skills and communication.

I am a founder and have hired 2 IITs n till now. One of them was okay I would say like acceptable & timely work was delivered throughout their tenure while the other had absolutely no idea about what he was doing. We had to even spend more on his training than we had to for someone our basic college graduates. But I do know IIT kids as well who are excellent ideators and have immense potential. Actually being a part of their ecell groups I have realised that these kids are no different but just have a higher will to do things hence they end up clearing difficult exams but that does not add to your skills. They are just proof of your dedication. So don't make IIT the goal. IIT is just a step to your success. You still need to continue to be opportunistic and always try to gain and advance in your core skills to actually make it. Remember learning is always from the cradle to the grave and your dedication to learning and growth should never stop, even if you have cleared IIT.

IITs & IIMs are great but students are more into to get huge packages than self learning. They think there is no need to learn something else because of that platform advantage. what we need from IITs is to give innovative ideas or work on a cause rather than doing same jobs like others. Steve jobs said a beautiful line regarding this "I want these students to build for others rather than saying Yes Sir"

Eventually, Brain also behaves like a muscle. Preparing for IIT helps you in working out your brain. I think that helps a lot in the future whether you get into IITs or not. Even UPSC exam, right now focuses a lot on analytical skills, which makes it easier for engineers to crack it. As a 30 year old, my advice is to give your all in JEE preparation, whether you make it or not, it will help you a lot later in life. And if you make it, IITs provide a lot of freedom and infra to students compared to any other college in India. Things about social and emotional skills might be true, but you will learn them quickly once you get out of college and might even get better at it than most people.

What you said is true but do you really think all people are interested in the preperation itself? I mean people have their own interests. Let us consider someone wants to become a sportsman, what the hell will that person do by wasting time in JEE preparation? I think what you said applies only if the student is not so much into aspects which include academics. They say when knowledge becomes a compulsions, the mind does not tend to retain that information. What do you think sir ?

Due to lack of awareness and guidance many of those kids couldn't pursue their carrer in sports fearing that what could be the backup if we failed in our sporting career due to injuries or lack of form. If were born a bit late we could have convinced our parents by telling them about various programs which are offered related to sports in Australian, british and american universities such as sport management or sports engineering or sport journalism as a backup of our sporting career.

Bruh that is an extreme schedule tho I had a somewhat similar schedule too. When I was in 11th-12th as a science student I was studying in this coaching class. Now at the time I didn't knew what was that coaching institution for just that their initial lectures were good, surrounding around basics so I liked the teaching staff there & so I opted for the class. Until I realized that they were taking too much time of my day. My college was from 7:20AM-12:00PM even then I had practicals 3 days a week so my college then would be finished around 1:00 PM. I had class right afterwards at 2:30PM & I was coming home at around 6-6:30PM. I actually didn't wanted to prepare for entrances at all tbh but I didn't knew they were going to include the entrances fees in my total too. Now since I paid for it I had to attend those JEE/NEET lectures. Even then we had some extreme topper students who'd attend both JEE/NEET lectures. I opted for NEET as my maths wasn't that good, but turns out I lack the whole base for physics & chemistry from academic times (8th onwards) itself. Then in the end I didn't applied for neet I ended up applying to MH-CET (state level entrance). Back then I felt giving those exams was useless until now when I look back, I atleast saw how they conduct exams, how they ask questions etc. Most people around me were serious so I was under pressure but even then some strong souls were there, giving these entrances just to experience" I think that is indeed important. Tbh I took science due to my parent's pressure, even now i was pressured to continue science & now I'm stuck in Bsc but I did realize one thing- your mental peace is important. Whether you're an arts student or commerce, pick a stream you like, work on your skills there & better learn how handle your failures. I wasn't used to the schedule mentioned above so I scored 57% in my 12th boards. I was honestly very disappointed & felt useless (still do sometimes) until now when I'm doing my degree. I honestly don't have any perticular interests in this field but tbh I'm glad I can atleast study in peace & not under pressure

How tf are IITians managing to be national level sportsmen?? I can accept that a couple of super-productive students exist that comply with this, but being a national level sportsmen and cracking JEE as well 100% guarantees that the person did all this while sacrificing his/her social life at the mere age of 14-18. We all need to have our fun and build personalities at this time, not become factory workers and studying things in deep for these 2-3 years that for those interested in taking up fields like Computer Science aren't even relevant. This makes me just come to the basic point- The competition for CSE and Data analytics and fields like this should involve skills based on the particular field. CSE should have coding entrance exams, and Automobile Engineering should have Mechanical Physics/other things related. All of this should be decided by students aged 15, and they should be taught for two years on the field chosen. Then they should take a break (drop) of an year for preparation for their entrance examination. Then, at 19-20 they can enter their wanted colleges.

Someone on quora said "Your Aim is IIT" "My aim is Mit" What's the difference?

Mit creates employers who established MNCs and IIT creates employees for MiT students mostly because the job and placement they get is from America and also majority of research is from MIT + Founders A huge deviation

I am glad i didnt waste my time giving jee or neet instead learnt programming and cyber security since i was 12 year old and now after 15 years im living the best life outside of india. IIT isnt everything. Your life has better paths and more chances when give time to your skills than wasting 2-3 years for iit.

As an IITIAN I think I am qualified to share my geniune experience. Currently I am pursuing masters from IIT Jodhpur which is 2nd generation IITs and have less facility than old iits. But I will have to disagree what you said about sports. IIT spends ample amount of money promoting sports and have carzy big sports complex. Also the point about mental health, we have student counsellor available in health care centre 24*7. It helps a lot of student who suffers from mental depressing. So, I think IITs really worth it.

As you are pursuing Master's, I am quite sure you liked the subject enough to go for higher studies. A lot of students don't have an interest in the subjects they start pursuing the problem lies there. There's no denial that IITs are some of the best in the world, but it is not that they are the only option out there.

@@ShubhamRaj-mu8ol absolutely right. The time you spend to prepare for iit, it's really worth it. That's all I am saying. That doesn't mean there is no other option.

The engineers can start with 5000 or 7000 but belive me once you gain experience even for 2-3 years in a domain which has demand in industry you still can beat IIT grads. I have been through depression during my college days may be I was not confident enough, I dint had friends , no one was talking with me in the college I really don't know the reason but when I passed out I learned so many things with built my personality and I was able improve on my weakness. Today after 8 years working experience I am really doing so well in my life. Not only in terms of salary but also a good profile which I always admire of. College teach us lot how to maintain a sustainable growth in life. The more challenges you face easier the life is in future.

@@atharvakhandelwal I am really sorry to hear this Atharva, but remember nothing is permanent. The first year is always challenging for students .The most important thing is realization that something is not well in life. List out the things which makes you feel low. You cannot change others so just work on the points which you can improve your weakness.
