i can se why peopel want a boat, lots of relaxing and fun, and all work is in pratical easy reachebel areas. :-) well, one good part of all your work is that you learn a lot of new things, and from what i can se on the videos on the boot, you will get in good shape cravling in and out of the boat and jumping on and of the dock. And sure you made a lot of memoreis on the trip home, even if not all was good times :-) Sorry about bad english, looking forward too more videos.

No worries at all about your English, I appreciate the effort. :) I did learn a lot, and no small part of what makes me want to live on the boat is the forced exercise, actually.

Another great video Maddy, don't forget every little win is a step closer to your dream and Id say this video was a big win for you,,, I mean not just finding lost tools cos who doesn't love that right 😁 Having complete confidence in the safety of your drinking water is a must ahead of the journey you're going to take! As always you give us the wonderfully down to earth video that we have come to expect from you, showing the real life mistakes that we all make and the doubts we all have as a result. (as opposed to the perfectly polished news anchor style of some channels) Just keep being you young Miss Maddy cos this auld landlubber from Scotland thinks you're doing great, plus you know what you're doing with all that angry pixies witchcraft and that's the next video of you in your comfort zone and Im already looking forward to it.

You can treat your tools with BoeShield to prevent rust. Puts a waxy like coat on them. Unfortunately, it is quite pricey. Spray with WD-40, then rub rust off with a ScotchBrite pad, then clean with Brake Cleaner and then apply BoeShield.

Good job on flushing your fresh water system. AN old trick my father told me about to remember the "righty tighty" is to take your right hand place, for example, at the lower hot water tank connection and snap your fingers to remind you of the direction to wrap the tape. Enjoying going on this journey with you. 👻

I think those little screw down caps have a tiny chain that retains them. On a old boat they might have rusted away. Just check to be safe. I commented before the end of the video. I see the chain now. You can put you knee on the hose so when you pull the trigger it does not come out with a blast.
@TheDigitalMermaid
@TheDigitalMermaid Жыл бұрын
One of the chains is broken, but as best as I can tell, there's no rust and I doubt anything fell into the tank. I'll be reworking the plumbing though, so I'll have a chance to check. I've seen folks kink their hose, never thought about just kneeling on it. Neat idea!

Amazing work and the water tank will clean itself when it hits 60 c for an hours it should do this once every week or so anyways

Heat certainly should help. Also, I hear of folks putting a teaspoon of bleach/chlorine into their tanks when they fill up, which I might do if I can find something to back up that approach.

Congratulations on your venture. Good luck and keep up the enthusiasm. You may want to confirm your plumbing on your domestic water pump and filter. It looks like the filter housing is on the suction side of the pump. I would suggest that filtration always occur on the discharge side of the pump as restrictions caused by filter on the suction side significantly disrupt the pump performance and can contribute to pump cavitation as there is only atmospheric pressure to drive the water thru the filter. By having the filter on the discharge side of the pump, there is much more driving force as well as is frees up the suction side of the pump to have improved flow supply. It's all related to NPSHr which if you are bored, is good reading material to help you sleep. Good luck

Old trick from my grandfather: keep a coffee can of sand (play sand works, hardware store) mix in oil or wd-40. Shove your small tools down in that and stir. Coats your tools after use, keeps them from rusting.

Being tech inclined, I wonder if you could load your new design with lots of sensors? So you can see if there's water flow on the pumps, water levels, etc. Some kind of smart dashboard and sequence diagrams on data

Try to avoid using laundry bleach in drinking water applications. It often has fragrances and other additives that may not be suitable for consumption. The preference for disinfection is to use sodium hypochlorite (liquid) or calcium hypochlorite (dry pellets). Available at your chemical warehouse or poos supplier.
@TheDigitalMermaid
@TheDigitalMermaid Жыл бұрын
I'm going to guess you mean "pools supplier". :P Yes, making sure it's pure and has no extra chemicals is a very good point.

That pink anti-freeze reminds me of the glycol solution we used for cooling the spindle motor on a small CNC machine way back when I worked for the Book Art Museum. I still wouldn't let glycol anywhere near potable water supply. I wonder if the plumbing can be winterized by draining it completely and possibly blowing compressed air through it, and leaving the system vented. Trace amounts of water won't damage the pipes.
@TheDigitalMermaid
@TheDigitalMermaid Жыл бұрын
Yup, it's "Non-toxic virgin propylene glycol formula". So safe for water tanks. I'd worry about water getting into the system via leaks or whatever, so I'd antifreeze it anyway, just to be sure.

Hi, fascinating your Post-Trip Livestream. Didn't manage to see it live, but enjoyed in full last night (better than Netflix as someone commented) :) I know this is past-due comment, but maybe for next time... antifreeze. I am in the solar industrie (both PV and Thermal), and for the DHW (Domestic Hot Water) systems, we use Propyleenglycol in the solar closed circuits, a food grade antifreeze (also used as a base for food and "other" lubricants... ;) ). The reason for that is that in case of a leak in the DHW/Solar heat-exchanger, given the toxicity of standard antifreeze you do not want in your potable water. You still would need to flush, but maybe not as thorough. ( of course, if you where using a non-toxic antifreeze m please disregard all this)
@derekhyland
@derekhyland Жыл бұрын
Continuing with the above, that is only for antifreeze. I see you also may using a combination antibacterial product. Having said that, you are probably using a specialized product...

Help me out here. Is this antifreeze as toxic as auto antifreeze is? If so, how can you be sure the water system is completely free of it? And what's it doing there? Can you winterize just by draining all water from the system? Or is this part of the cleaning process?
@charles.neuman18
@charles.neuman18 Жыл бұрын
Aha, I found an article by West Marine that answers my question. The pink stuff is nontoxic. Don't use the green stuff in potable water systems. (KZfaq won't let me post a link, but look for "Do It Yourself: Winterize Your Potable Water System".)

Ever considered backup propulsion? Like a 10 hp outboard on the transom, just in case?
@TheDigitalMermaid
@TheDigitalMermaid Жыл бұрын
I have, actually. I haven't even picked a primary propulsion yet, but some form of redundancy does keep coming up. I think the most likely option will be an oversized dinghy motor that can slow-tow the main boat in a pinch.
@charles.neuman18

@@TheDigitalMermaid That makes sense. I have a 19' day sailer. Some people from my club go out with no motor at all and get back OK. Or they sail in groups and get help if needed. I'm the guy who has two motors, just in case. It started because I had small kids on board. But now it's that I just don't want to get stuck. I've had gas and electric motors. None of them are 100% reliable. Plus, the wind can be too weak or too strong to get back by sail alone.

SQUIRREL! Otherwise, please secure that water tank cap before it gets lost in the never ending list of to do items. Dont want you at sea and out of water because the cap came astray and your freshwater is now contaninated. I know you have multiple tanks but murphys law... The last tank you need will always be the one you can use when an emergency crops up. And now that you have rusty pliers, you qualify as a surgeon / dentist in any navy in the 1800's.
