I'm back to hustling on this engine swap for the 1994 Jeep Wrangler YJ that I call Butter Jeep. This was suppose to be a slam dunk as I have 2 donor engines. One that is really rough and came from a U-pull-it junkyard. The other came from a wrecked 2004 silverado or Tahoe. The second motor was bought off Marketplace and I paid up for it.... See how it all shakes out on this episode of The Dirthead Shed.
Thanks OnX Offroad for keeping me on track. If you want to get a percentage off of you subscription use code dirtheadshed or follow this link.

Yeah, people fall to realize what it takes to financially start and build a channel. Until one gains a fairly large following, most all, if not all plus more, revenue coming in, goes right back into the channel/business.

My kid used to go thru tons of brakleen in the cans so I bought a sprayer like that years back and have been doing the 5gal Brakleen cans every since and saved a ton of money. I took the tip apart and pulled the piece out of the inside so it would shoot a stream, much better!!

Dude, I love your videos!!!! You are so relatable. I feel like I'm hanging at your shop watching you do this and your telling me how you're going to do it!!!! I wish I would have seen this video before I bought my first jeep. It was a 1998 TJ with a 4.0 with an automatic. It was lots of fun until my radiator exploded!!!! I have a lot of experience with LS motors, but not so much with Jeeps. At the time I had a 2012 Silverado with a 5.3 with 180,000 miles on it. Body was junk, but scoped the motor and saw good cross hatch on the cylinder walls. Was thinking of dropping it in the TJ just before the radiator exploded. Unfortunately I have a gravel driveway and no garage, or friends with a garage where I could work for a couple of weeks, as I work full time. So I fixed the Jeep to make it driveable and sold it. Still driving the truck. Wish I had a shop or even a garage.

We bought a parted out buggy (3.9 v8 land rover discovery)which was sitting in a paddock for 4 years no bonnet and a hole in the valley gasket . We drained the oil and filled a 20 litre bucket with what consisted of 15 litres of crystal clear water 4 litres of milk shake and 1 litre of what looked like oil 😂😂😂😂. We re built the buggy and didn't touch the motor other than 3 oil changes and new valley gasket runs like a dream and still going strong in 4wd comps 5 years later ha ha ha ha

For cleaning greasy engines, differentials etc. grab yourself several aerosol cans of "Krud Kutter" from Home Depot. One of the best degreasers I've ever used. I've used it on everything from oil encrusted engines, rims, and even household projects. Spray it on, wait, and then use a stiff nylon brush to cut through everything. Best part is its non toxic so no nasty fumes. And no, I don't work for the company that makes it!

Dave...I like how you explain things...and your calm exuberance is infectious haha... You've probably already seen the build...but Paul @ FabRats stuffed a 6.0 in his FJ rockcrawler, and had similar issues with his exhaust on the RH bank...he ended up routing it in FRONT of the oil pan and merged it with the LH side...I couldn't tell from the camera work if the Butter Jeep affords you the room...but it's a suggestion... *side note: the better 3/4's was looking over my shoulder and asked what you were doing, I said he's showing me how to put an LS into my 03' Tundra babe...she says an and I quote..." what's wrong with your truck now, didn't you just fix it? " ...babe...I'm ALWAYS "fixing it 😜 *

Those spray cans have a button in the nozzle that makes is spray like a mist. Take the nozzle cap off and take the button out and it'll spray much better with a lot more pressure. I would at least pull the heads and get a look at the tops of the pistons and valves. You're right there and it almost disassembled anyways. Plus there's a plug under the rear cover that should be replaced along with the rear seal. That plug blocks off some of the hole that's drilled for oil flow. The original plug is plastic and can break. If it breaks you can loose oil pressure. I half assed a lot of stuff in my younger days but realized as I got older that doing things the right way...usually keeps you from having to pull a dead engine...just saying.

I understand why you would think the oil filter sucked in. In actuality the oil pressure collapsed it. Water mixed with oil doesnt push through the filter very good along with the water soaking in to the pleated paper making it weak

Hey Dave if you take the nozzle off the reasonable brake clean can, there is a little brass jet that slows the flow and makes that mist come out. Take the brass jet and toss it then put it back together. Now it’s going spray with a solid stream and actually work.

Speedo on the Super Duty is off because the speedo gear is on the ring gear on Ferds. Gearing won't change anything since it's turning at axle speed, not driveshaft speed. 😁 Sponsors: get paid, just don't be slimy about it. You know who looks slimy. Engine: mine looked like shit. In the end, they're small block chevys. Not super complicated. Rip the heads off of both, use the bottom end that looks the cleanest, and send the heads off for machining. One thing to avoid are any 706 heads made by Castech (casting mark looks like a battery between the 2 rocker bolt holes on the end that says "706"): these tend to crack when re-torquing after use.

Started watching you and Ian Johnson when mini-truckin was cool, Xtreme 4X4 was on the TV and Petersons 4wd magazine was the rage.. Love it when you colab with other youtubers and the whole ultimate adventure.. I will continue to follow you and the gang no matter what! Rock on and you do you!!

the trick to buying used LS engines is to get one out of a crash/rollover vehicle. I learned the hard way too, bought a cheap one off some guys garage floor it was trashed with worn pushrods at very least. SO next time i got one from part tiume mechanic /part time farmer. He swore engine i got was from a rollover suburban, even had video of it running in wrecked truck. looked the same so i thought it was worth 400usd TLDR it worked great.

In case you never tried mineral spirits, it works way better than brake cleaner. It’s far cheaper and you can put it in your sweet new sprayer.

I’ll try it: I have a bunch. But I don’t normally like the oily residue that it leaves behind

That engine probably has Castec 706 heads on it. They crack around the cylinder head bolt bosses and leak internally. Just replaced the heads on mine with 862s. Ran engine flush in it like specified, drained oil, replaced filter. Runs good.

Nice job on the engine swap. Dont be afraid to get inside an engine, there is nothing special in there and a TON of information and support out there

Ford uses a sensor on the ring gear, so gear ratio doesn't effect it, but tire size does. Should be able to get it calibrated to get at least closer.
