The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Eric Burdon was like 22 or 23 at this time. One of the most powerful vocalists of all time. His low notes sound amazing and so do the same notes an octave up. That is SO rare. Most vocalists just tend to sound different when singing in different registers but this guy keeps his tone consistent, no matter if he is singing low or singing very high. And I’m sure this has been pointed out 1000 times before: no auto tune.

Voice does not come out of the face. Look at the size of that chest, neck, and width of those shoulders. He's not fat either. He's built like a brick .... house. And got the musical talent to back it up. I know they got monitors in front of them but I doubt they could very much of themselves. The audience seems to be feeding back through the mics. Maybe they mic the audience and left them up too high when the screams began.

Wasn’t he like 22 or 23 at this time? I mean the amount of control he has over his voice is insane. There is no difference in tonality between the low and high parts. That’s so difficult to do. The Beatles are my favorite band of all time but there are a few of their songs when they are really belting it out that I can’t help but think “Eric Burdon could do this better”. Not that I would ever replace any original Beatles recordings. I just wish the guy covered some of their songs in the same way that Joe Cocker covered “help from my friends”. But part of the magic of that cover is switching the song to 3/4.

I can personally attest that every High School garage band(including mine, The Beau Street Runners, Franconia, Virginia) learned to play and perform this song when it came out for every single backyard party, sock hop and battle of the bands. And it was the first song I learned on electric guitar that had picked arpeggios. We played all The Animals songs. Chas Chandler is one of my favorite bassists, criminally underrated. He adopted playing with a pick and used the Gibson EB2 hollowbody bass early in the Animals run, later he switched between Fender basses and the hollow 335 style basses. Great tone and his lines always served the song. Because of his great success later as Hendrix's producer his own career was kind of forgotten. He was great though, solid as hell.

@@tothelighthouse9843 Great comment. It's just a shame that verse was missed out of this wonderful performance - no doubt due to time constraints imposed by the TV format - the one that starts "I've got one foot on the platform, the other foot on the train". For me that line especially captures the dramatic tension at the heart of the song, pausing in midst of making his fateful decision - that inner conflict you just described - to tell us his story and sound a warning..

@@papercup2517 Yep, the guts of the song are really missing in this version, lol. It's not just the 'one foot on the platform' verse, but also the one that I find hits hardest--the one where the son sings about his father. The son who longs for his father, but has to admit what he knows--his father doesn't need his family, he only needs a suitcase & a trunk. The son who knows he's not enough for his father who is only ever really satisfied when he's drunk. The vocals in this live version are spectacular tho.

When I was a kid in 1970 I got in trouble when my parents came home and I was listening to Creedence Clearwater Revival cranked up on our Zenith stereo. Fast forward nearly 50 years to the day I walked into my mom’s house and this song was blasting through her stereo. While she was vacuuming. “I really like that ‘House of the Rising Sun’,” she said. She died in 2020, a week shy of her 95th birthday.

The "British Invasion" kids was one of the greatest things to happen to popular music as these British groups took American birthed rock and rock to a whole new level with their creativity. This song was so popular when it came out, you couldn't tune into any radio station at any time of day or night without hearing it. Historians have not been able to definitively identify The House Of The Rising Sun, but here are the two most popular theories: 1) The song is about a brothel in New Orleans. "The House Of The Rising Sun" was named after its occupant Madame Marianne LeSoleil Levant (which means "Rising Sun" in French) and was open for business from 1862 (occupation by Union troops) until 1874, when it was closed due to complaints by neighbors. It was located at 826-830 St. Louis St. 2) It's about a women's prison in New Orleans called the Orleans Parish women's prison, which had an entrance gate adorned with rising sun artwork. This would explain the "ball and chain" lyrics in the song. The melody is a traditional English ballad, but the song became popular as an African-American folk song. It was recorded by Texas Alexander in the 1920s, then by a number of other artists including Leadbelly, Woody Guthrie, Josh White and later Nina Simone. It was her version The Animals first heard. No one can claim rights to the song, meaning it can be recorded and sold royalty-free. Many bands covered the song after it became a hit for The Animals.
