Week 5 of suggesting this: You should really include "Drakkhen" on SNES in your skyboxes series. The game is an open-world 3D RPG with a day and night cycle, and amazing vibey music. Please at least check out the game!

I think that the rain on the second day is more about producing a feeling of disappointment and melancholy rather than urgency. After everything is bright and sunny on the first day, this is like a solemn moment when everyone is beginning to lose hope and realize that the moon is actually falling. This is probably about the point when many of the NPC's dialogue goes from "There's no way that the moon is falling!" to "Oh, shit, it really is falling... This is going to negatively impact the festival, isn't it?" It is about disillusionment and the sickening realization that things might not actually turn out okay in the end.
@KairuHakubi
@KairuHakubi 2 жыл бұрын
I took it as just a sign that things are still going along as usual. If you just stop the moon, everything else in the world will continue as if nothing happened. Just that bit of continuity. That and reinforcing the groundhog day loop because it ALWAYS rains on day 2.

Agreed. The 3DS version didn't have that, which is another small but interesting detail. In the N64 it's scary because you know you're not gonna get to see the sun fully rise, while in the 3DS Version it's as if the Sun has also abandoned the world of Termina

I've stayed awake for many summer sunrises and they have a very weird feeling, like a change in pressure in the air that comes in front of the actual sunlit portion. And the though of that being the last one before cataclysm, that's spooky.

12:47 That guy's actually the part-timer that works at night. The owner is the one who's there during the day; he changes into a different outfit and is the one who runs the Curiosity Shop at night. The part-timer actually is working part-time because he's in a band that apparently isn't making much money. You can see him in a tree in Termina Field trying to get some red rupees during the day. He says he stole the rupees from a crow... The same crow that circles Clock Town and is "fond of musical instruments" (according to a gossip stone) and will drop rupees for you if you play songs for it, implying he played music for the crow so it would drop rupees. Yeah, this game is amazing. Maybe the skybox that's left out is the one at the beginning of the game in the forest since you already covered it kind of?

@@Drew_150 No, I'm referring to an unnamed guay that circles Clock Town and drops rupees if you play ocarina songs for it. It could be referring to Takkuri and that adds another element if it is because then he's stealing from his boss's side hustle lol. But he's much closer to Clock Town and pretty far from the entrance to Milk Road where Takkuri is at.

However, I turned one of your videos up loud when he needed to take a crap in the bathroom to drown out some noise, and then it became a tradition. Anytime either of us had to poop, we'd pick out another egg busters and turn it up loud. He insisted I make you aware of this. edit: Oh and also I really liked this video too. I’ve always felt like the skyboxes in Majora’s Mask did a lot more for the atmosphere than they did in Ocarina of Time. One of the things I remember most vividly was how beautiful the night sky looked, with its rich purples and blues and reds on the final night especially. It was oddly serene; even though you’re going to die in a couple hours, the sky offers some level of comfort in your final hours.

It didn't occur to me until watching your video that the shop is heavily themed around fishing, and the daytime clerk is the same NPC as the fishing hole clerk in OoT. I'm still figuring stuff out about this game like two decades later. I'm wondering if there's anything else that I missed that was completely in plain sight like that. Your videos are great and I can always tell you're aiming to offer something different than most other channels, and for me your style of dry delivery is always preferable to the standardized overenthusiasm of other internet people.

I think this is your best skybox video yet! Like you mentioned, as compared to SM64 where you just talked about which ones you liked or not, this video really feels like more of an essay on Majora's Mask, where you use the skyboxes as the vehicle for analysis (like how an essay on an entire book may only use a handful of quotes to make its point). Cmon, Austin, that hipster dude doesn't run the shop. He just works there part time and doesn't give a shit, the guy with the itchy back runs the shop. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for letting me use this knowledge once in my life.

I like you. You bring up a lot of the mundane things that almost always go unnoticed in games, and I appreciate that someone takes time out of their life to point them out and give them some love too.

I was really hoping you’d talk about the skybox inside the Stone Tower temple after you flip it. Having the sky beneath you when you’re finishing this oppressive temple is so beautiful and surreal. In my last playthrough I was in that temple at the very end of the third day, as the clock counts down, and having that incredible reddish sky all underfoot (especially in the opening room of the temple) was extremely beautiful. Best skybox moment in the game for me. Fantastic video!! I want that Battlefront II skybox video.

A suggestion for future skybox videos should be for games on the sega saturn! A large amount of the games use skyboxes for "3d" effects because the saturn wasn't capable of it. while they aren't "skyboxes" per se, they function the same and are highly detailed!

Love the more in depth commentary on the feelings the skyboxes evoke. But I like you still point out the little things that are odd or remarkable about something in the environment. Keep it up!

Its so weird, youre so right about the rain of day 2, it doesnt feel like it adds to any urgency, it makes it feel more normal somehow... i think the way i'd articulate it is that its almost like a distraction from the moon (despite it still being there), like yeah the sky is as normal as ever, its raining! how could something as bonkers as the moon falling be happening. also worth mentioning in my opinion is how weird it is that it rains in clock town when the moon should be acting like a giant umbrella over it, considering its directly above. it could be instead that the rain clouds are between the moon and the earth, but as only a skybox they very much visually are behind the moon... perhaps a missed opportunity for it to Not rain in clock town and to rain elsewhere, and maybe even some dialogue about it.

Just had the amusing experience of walking up to my bus stop listening to your stuff on Spotify (Good, good job, looking forward to seeing the impact of listening to If You Tell the Truth on a loop for five hours is going to have on my 2022 rewind or whatever) and was like alright let’s see if finishing up whatever video it was I started yesterday on the bus is a feasible option, and here’s a new video! Great news for me and watching on the bus was indeed feasible and fun. Then the more demented realization: that it has apparently only been in that short gap between weekly new videos that I’ve seen, conservatively, one million of your other videos. What I’m saying is you’re welcome for the demented analytics

I loved and miss Eggbusters a lot, but I'm really happy with Skybox Appreciation and Unremarkable Locations. It's very interesting to hear opinions about these things that are in so, so many games that just about everyone overlooks and takes for granted. The way that you present things has always entertained me. Thank you for continuing to make amazing content!

Majora's Mask is my favorite game so I'm always glad to see videos on anything about it. As far as the skyboxes are concerned, I wholeheartedly agree that they really add to the atmosphere more that Ocarina's did, and reminds me more of SM64's skyboxes for that reason. I definitely would love more of these in the future (and more odd things and unremarkable places I've never looked at). The way the sky changes kind of feels like the sky (or the world) itself is experiencing the same changes that the people are. It starts with normalcy (clear blue sky), then more and more people begin to realize the Moon is actually falling (overcast and rainy). Afterwards, even more people begin to truly fall into despair and sorrow as they realize their fate (sickly green). Finally, the final day's beautiful night sky is when almost everyone accepts their fate and instead of being sorrowful, some find peace in knowing the end is nigh (best evidenced by Anju and Kafei's quest ending). Am I reading too far into this? Probably. Does this make any sense? Probably not. But this video made me realize this and so here is a long winded comment that says a lot of nothing. Awesome video, dude, keep up the great work.
