Ulfric Stormcloak is among Skyrim’s most prominent characters. The man behind The Elder Scrolls 5’s most major conflict, Ulfric is a hero to some and a villain to others. Being such a controversial figure, the self-appointed High King of Skyrim is also quite the interesting man and behind everything we know about him, he’s hiding a few secrets. So today we’ll be taking a look at five things you (probably) never knew about Ulfric Stormcloak in The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim.

What makes you think Hrolfdir had a say in that? It was Ulfric's men who reclaimed the city; Hrolfdir didn't have his own guards as they were sent off as conscripts or killed by the Reachmen. Hrolfdir would have been a puppet of Ulfric.
@williamleonardreesejr.1992

@@dutchpatriot17 Yeaaaah no. Ulfric did not claim Markarth for himself. He claimed it in the name of Hrolfdir and returned control of the Reach back over to him. Hence why the Forsworn say that it was "the Jarl" that ordered the crimes. The use of "The Jarl" implies that it would be the Jarl most known to the Reach rather then the invading Ulfric.

@MrJH101

@Riggy1991 It’s debatable if King Torygg would have seceded from the Empire and also as to how effective he would have actually been if he did. Some characters state that he would have, and many others state that he would not have. Torygg was said to have close connections with the Empire and would praise them frequently, but was also said to have some sympathies for the Stormcloak cause. He never publicly showed signs of discontentment at the White-Gold Concordat and avoided actually talking about it. Therefore, it’s hard to discern what his true positions or personal motives were, but all this really tells me is that High King Torygg was most likely more of a politician than he was a warrior king. However, no one can ever know for sure what Torygg would have done because, in the end, he never did do anything. Even when Ulfric was imprisoned by the Empire to be used as an imperial scapegoat after he had just liberated Markarth, King Torygg still did nothing. And, unfortunately, that’s how High King Torygg will be remembered for all his deeds, the king who did nothing and was slain for doing nothing.

Nate, I have to disagree here. Given all that Ulfric has been through, his capture and torture by the high elves, the lies he suffered at the hands of the empire after the Markarth incident and being locked up for doing what was asked of him, the initial betrayal of the empire by banning Talos worship, do you seriously think Ulfric woukd have come to Solitude like a kid with his hand out for a sweetroll? Even had he known of Torygg idolizing him, which, from what I managed to discover, has no knowledge of, but if he had, that would have only further cemented his resolve.

I had a blast the very few times I actually played as a Stormcloak. Ulfric is more interesting to talk to and has a great backstory, and is an absolute bomb to fight alongside of (and Galmar easily has the best lines in the civil war with his "steaming you-know-what"), but in the end he makes a better adversary than an ally. Not that Ulfric is incredibly hard to beat, but the fact that the guy usually stands up and flat-out disarms me makes the fight fun. That and the main questline never feels complete unless Ulfric is there after I kill Alduin. If Tullius's death wasn't so pathetic and if Ulfric wasn't such an ass immediately afterward, I'd be more inclined to go Stormcloak more often.

Ulfric was captured and tortured by the thalmor during the great war. His stubborn will proved strong but not unbreakable. The thalmor broke him and he gave the information they wanted *after* the empire lost. The catch is they didn't tell him. They thanked him for his "cooperation" and said their victory was all thanks to him and released him. he feels responsible for the loss even though he really isn't. He's paranoid and scared what they will do to Skyrim. Let's face it, a bunch of Nazi elves don't hold the best ideals for the Nord's homeland

9:00 Uhh, wait, Ulfric declared himself High King? I'm pretty sure he didn't. He even mentions that the moot of the Jarls have to decide about that. Sure, one would think that he does expect to be the most likely candidate; especially if (IF) the Civil War is going according to his plans, and he reinstates Jarls that support him. But he does clearly mention that no one person can decide this, but only the moot. Where did you get the information that Ulfric declared himself the rightful High King? That's a big assumption...

The man makes an oath in which his supporters literally declare him the ''true High King''. Ulfric keeps the Moot from meeting unless if he has installed nothing but puppets. @@dutchpatriot17 Again, I am not saying that he doesn't /see/ himself as the most likely next High King. His followers obviously state that they want him to be the High King, else, well, they wouldn't be his followers in a Civil War following the death of the former one by Ulfric's hands. But that is his followers, and not him. Same with the oath, which you have to swear to Galmar, not Ulfric. So yes, does Ulfric think he should become High King? Absolutely. But there is a HUGE difference in going for that position, and in outright declaring himself '[true] High King'. I'll say it again at the end, but this makes the difference between a revolution and outright usurpation, and that's a huge one. All I can find of him saying anything about the matter right now is: "There hasn't been a true High King in Skyrim for generations. For too long he's been hand-picked by the Emperor, and given emphatic nods by milk-drinking Jarls addicted to Imperial coin. It's time we had a real king. One of our own making." Galmar: "Your words give voice to what we all feel, Ulfric. And that's why you will be High King. But the day words are enough, will be the day when soldiers like us are no longer needed." Ulfric: "I would gladly retire from the world were such a day to dawn." Galmar: "And now, I present to you, Ulfric Stormcloak, hero of the people, liberator and High King of Skyrim!" Ulfric: "I am indeed Ulfric Stormcloak, and at my side the man/woman we know as Stormblade, and the world knows as the Dragonborn. And indeed, there are many that call us heroes. But it is all of you who are the true heroes! It was you who fought a dying Empire who sunk its claws into our land, trying to drag us down with it. It was you who fought the Thalmor and their puppets who would have us deny our gods and our heritage. It was you who fought your kin who didn't understand our cause, who weren't willing to pay the price of our freedom. But more than that, it was you who fought for Skyrim, for our right to fight our own battles... To return to our glory and traditions, to determine our own future!" Soldiers: "Huzzah!" Ulfric: "And it is for these reasons that I cannot accept the mantle of "High King." Not until the Moot declares that title should adorn my shoulders will I accept it." "Indeed, Elisif has become Jarl of Solitude, historically and conveniently home of the High King, backed by Imperial interests. But the Moot has not yet met to name her High Queen. And they won't. Not as long as I have any say in it." [After the Battle for Solitude has been won by the Stormcloaks] Ulfric: "Then it is settled. The Jarl will continue to rule Solitude, I will garrison armies here to ward off Imperial attempts to reclaim the city. And in due time, the Moot will meet, and settle the claim to High King once and for all. [...]" Ulfric: "How'd I do?" Galmar: "Eh, not so bad. Nice touch about the High King." Ulfric: "Thank you, I thought so, too." Galmar: "It's a foregone conclusion, you know." Ulfric: "Oh, I know." Finally, if you ask Ulfric if he is to be called High King now, he will tell you: "No, not yet. We'll wait for the Moot to name me High King. It'll be better for all that way. [...]" [ en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Ulfric_Stormcloak ] He challenges the throne for sure, and he officially does so. Quite literally, that's how Torygg died. And yes, he absolutely intends to become High King. But he does /not/ outright call himself the High King. Which might seem minor, but oh hell it is not; that would be usurpation and politically on a completely different scale. Instead, he lets his followers carry this word around, and (mostly?) appoints Jarls who he knows would vote in favour of him during the moot. And sure he does that, else the entire Civil War wouldn't have a point to begin with - the Imperials do the same, for a good reason. You can call these new Jarls 'puppets' of the Empire for the same reason, but really this is just a very basic political move for whichever faction wins, and shouldn't be judged on either side...

@@dutchpatriot17 I do not know who created the oath, and neither do you. The moot not meeting has /nothing/ to do with the question of whether or not Ulfric literally called himself the [true] High King at any point in time or not, which is the only thing I commented on. I could answer your question anyway, but won't, because this was never what I intended with my comment and you're leading the conversation off-topic with it. And the loading screen is standing in direct contrast to several, very direct in-game quotes which /you/ are ignoring. When in doubt, I would /always/ take an actual in-game voiceline over a sentence on a loading screen that was probably put there during a different phase of game development, maybe even different people than those who wrote the actual conflict happening in-game. It's very, very clear that he does not ever call himself High King, and even makes a point of that fact several times, towards his own closest followers, unasked. If you want to desperately cling onto what someone wrote on a loading screen, I'll still go with "claims to be" meaning maybe in close circles, 1:1, to Galmar. He absolutely never officially claimed that for himself. And saying he did in a video about his character is just spreading wrong information. The very opposite has been emphasized again and again during the Civil War storyline... Edit: I want people who are as interested in this conflict to know where I am coming from and why I mention it - Yes, I did go with the Stormcloaks in-game. No, I don't want to heat up the endless debate, because I think it's beautiful that TES is built upon the very principle that the player chooses what happens, and whatever we choose is 100% canon in our game. I think it's beautiful we are both right, just because we want it to be right. That's the D&D spirit, and the reason I love this game franchise so much! BUT, if you do open the debate, be fair. Do not spread misinformation on either side, it tends to get uglier than it needs to very quickly. Nate said he's with the Imperials, which is great! But as a KZfaqr with a huge fanbase, when he makes a video about a character he's obviously decided against in his gameplay, he does have to watch his step. Everyone knows this gets heated quickly. Don't be unfair. Stay objective. I'm sure he overlooked this one, so I wanted to point it out for anyone interested in the debate.

Going to be honest, I understand the Stormcloaks. Imagine this: you're a Nord minding your own business when the Empire and Thalmor rolls into your land, tells your god Talos is fake and makes it illegal to worship him. After generations of this, it would be understandable why they don't take too kindly to the Elves.

The problem is, Dark Elves are not exactly the same with as High Elves. And Argonians in Windhelm suffers the most. About Talos, many Imperials worship Talos as well, and many of the Nord Legion soldiers, including Legate Rikke, still believes in Talos. These people just realise that is the cost to fight another day and to not be subdued by the Thalmor. They see the REAL threat in the southwest, and wish to wipe them to live in peace again and worship what they want to worship.
@sycorez
@sycorez 4 жыл бұрын
The ban on Talos worship wasn't enforced until Ulfric started the rebellion. That in turn meant the Thalmor were allowed into the land and started enforcing it. Ulfric is using religion as the likes of Al Qaida and ISIS do. He's a complex character but I can't support him. He and his followers are racists and there is insinuation from dialogue within the game that they want to cleanse Skyrim of non-nords. Though, there seems to be a lot of that in Elder Scrolls (Dunmer aren't a fan of outlanders, Redguards hate High Elves and maybe Elves on general, Nords wiping out the snow elves and the Snow Elves attempts to wipe them out prior, the Dwemer and their treatment of the Snow elves, etc.)

@@Stevo-4896 The religious freedom your fighting for will lead too skyrim losing against the thalmor and getting conquered because overall the empire barely sent any troops to fight the stormcloaks and when the game started General tullius already captured ulfric stormcloak and won but Alduin saved him. The empire did that with less troops but still lost to the dominion so how would skyrim that is overall weaker than the entire dominion hold back the thalmor and win, they can't. The empire outlawed talos so the empire and it's people could survive once the second great war starts they would allow talos warship again because talos is tiber septim who founded the empire. Ulfric was someone who craved power so he used the current politcal climate to amass a following and started a ruckus about talos being outlawed even thought the law wasn't being enforced which brought this to the thalmors attention and wound up forcing the empire so they had more time to prepare for the second great war, to enforce the law which caused more people to flock to ulfrics banner. The thalmor wanted this civil war so both skyrim and the empire were weakened it say so in a dossier in the thalmor embassy. My argument against Ulfric's actions has nothing to do with his alleged racism - it's that his actions were hasty, short-sighted, and ultimately helped Alduin and the Thalmor more than the Nords, even if they ended up winning. I should also add that I like Ulfric as a character. He has many admirable traits. Why were his actions hasty? Because I believe, based on dialogue from multiple sources, that Torygg could have been convinced to see things from Ulfric's point of view in time. It's said that the young man idolized the Jarl of Windhelm and help him up as an example of a true Nord hero. Ulfric decided to make a dramatic, hasty move by assassinating the King, when I believe some sort of understanding could have been had between them. Why were his actions short-sighted? His anger and frustration at the terms of the White Gold Concordant are not only felt by him and the Jarls who support the rebellion, but to a certain degree by all Nords. It did indeed feel like a betrayal when Mede signed the document. That's a given. However, it's telling how other Nords and their Jarls chose to cope with this cultural shift. Jarl Balgruuf is a good example. He puts the people of Whiterun first. He has no aspirations of being High King. He only entered the war when he felt he didn't have a choice. That's because he and the other western Jarls realize the knife's edge their society is on now, and the real danger the Aldmeri Dominion poses the races of Men. He hates them as much as Ulfric, but he realizes when to act and when to bide his time. How does the war aid the enemies of Skyrim? Quite simply, any aggression between the nations the Aldmeri Dominion opposes benefits them more than the combatants. The Great War cost Cyrodiil a lot. Many Bretons, Redguards and Nords died fighting for the Empire in that war, as well. The Concordant that ended the war was signed because neither side wanted to spare any more of its young people on the battlefield. The Empire barely survived. If it fractures into smaller pieces, it surely won't next time. Imagine a power lifter who maxes out at 650 lbs. What happens when you add 20 more lbs on top of that? That's the extra burden Cyrodiil would face without troops from Skyrim, and once it falls, Skyrim's borders are wide open for the Dominion to march right in. Not good, my friends. And the Dragons? This one is simple. Alduin literally feeds on the souls of Nord dead in Sovngarde. He doesn't care what uniform they wear. Eating people makes him stronger. He's already a god. He poses a huge threat. Feeding him is the last thing Skyrim should be doing. True, Ulfric had no way of knowing this, but in hindsight it's a good illustration of the folly of this war. Last but not least, the duel was only legitimate through an archaic set of laws in Skyrim Ulfric and his supporters are quick to point out that he challenged Torygg "In the old way". It's true that Torygg accepted, begrudgingly. His reputation was on the line. I get that. Thing is, though, such a duel has about as much legitimacy in 4th Era Skyrim as a pistol duel between two presidential candidates would in our own world. Ulfric cites tradition, but he doesn't mention the whole "dueling to the death for kingship" thing is an archaic tradition from thousands of years ago. That's simply not how Nordic kings are chosen any more. It was way back in the Dawn Era and the First Era, but it stopped by the Second. The Empires that Reman Cyrodiil and Tiber Septim built changed Nord society a lot. It's important to keep in mind that if we're going to honor Talos as a god, part of that is respecting the wishes the mortal man Tiber Septim had. He had a clear and concise vision for how his subject kings are chosen. It's a civilized process. It doesn't involve stabbing people in the heart. Praise Talos and respect his laws, I say. Titus Mede II may be an unpopular ruler, but he's still the inheritor of the throne of the Septims, for better or worse. Respect the office and the Empire, if not the man. Skyrim has been part of the Empire for the better part of a thousand years. Imperial Law is not some tyrannical thing being imposed upon them. They chose the yoke willingly when they bowed down to Septim in the 2nd Era. You sleep where you make your bed.

I know he uses Immersive Armors. Some of the armor is very unique(and thus recognizable), and you can see it in a lot of his videos. He most likely also uses Immersive Weapons, but I'm not 100% sure. He does for sure use Royal Armory, as you can see the unique weapons on some of the special characters. I am pretty sure he uses a cloaks mod, possibly Cloaks of Skyrim. He may also use Steel Woodcutter Axe, but I can't tell for sure. It looks like it, but I'm not 100%. The following I am not sure if he uses, but are good for immersion and are more or less lore friendly(or compatible). I will stick with weapons and armor type mods, but may branch a little. Other mods that I don't know if he uses but are really good for weapons and armors are Legend of The Dragonborn(Massive questline and lots of collectibles, and new artifacts), Awesome Artifacts(buffs weak unique artifacts), and realistic Melee Range(makes it so there isn't a three foot gust of air that damages you during attacks). Animated Armory is good as well, and has some good addon mods that make it better(I suggest 1st Person Spear and Rapier Animations, and a good pair mod for it called Rapier and Dagger SSE). Ohh, yes please! I'd really like to know why he acts the way he does when we meet him, but is looked down upon by so many people during this time. Sure, the White-Gold Concordat is the big Thing a lot of people hate him for, but especially what Amaund Motierre said after learning of his death made me extremely curious about what's really going on in the political ranks of the Imperial City. I'm afraid we just don't /have/ confirmed answers for that available, since it would interfere too much with the Civil War questline... But some background info on the (late) Emperor would be much needed!

It makes sense that Lonely-Gale would have been an advisor to Ulfric. Windhelm and Solitude shared the same coastline and had open harbors. I'm surprised that a naval strike was never attempted by either side. The Emperor's personal flagship, the Katariah arrives in Skyrim should the Dragonborn pursue the Dark Brotherhood questline. A coordinated land-and naval siege of Windhelm or Solitude should have been possible for either side.

@MADhorseKD

Exactly, Torygg was often spoken of as weak or 'a boy' and a puppet to the empire. The fact that he let Skyrim dwindle the way he did thus far shows that he did not have the backbone to stand up for his people without the threat of a civil war. And for a people who place heavy emphasis on traditions and honor, where leadership falls to the one with the most strength of mind and arm, Torygg was too weak to lead Skyrim out of that situation. Ulfric was practically the only one who could ever hope to do so. Granted, Torygg died with his boots on and with honor during that duel. But i'm convinced this was the only way Ulfric could have handled the situation. A legal means to remove Torygg as High King, saving both sides honor (the shout is a legal practice, though so ancient it hadn't been heard of in generations if i recall correctly) and sending a message to both the imperial and Thalmor sides and Skyrims own people and its Jarls. Conflict could not have been avoided since Ulfric had to be High King to actually get results. Never even mentioned tht he wanted power for power sake, in fact the opposite, he often looked up against it but accepted that he had to do it. Torygg knew this the moment Ulfric issued the challenge. He was redeemed in a way, fighting to the end. Don't get me started on Elisif though....

@@dutchpatriot17 What are you even talking about? How can leadership go from the current High King (who died) to a previous one? Its a hereditary title, meaning the previous ones would be dead... A moot can be called to decide who will be named the new High King when there are no heirs, when the current High King had been bested in a duel by a Jarl or when the High King refuses to engage with said duel, automatically forfeiting the fight. elderscrolls.fandom.com/wiki/High_King#cite_note-Sybille-2 At which point the moot would most likely already be in favor of the Jarl at this point. He did not murder Torygg... He killed him during an honor duel which Torygg accepted and stands by ancient right as a sacred tradition in Skyrim, once which 'by law' the ruling class must adhere to. The one thing that's being used to call it unlawful was the use of the voice. The reason why this is, is because even the current time Nords aren't clear whether it was legal or not. Hence the writing team slipping us another schism. A shout was used but the context remains unclear for most as many attest to the fight being over as soon as it began and people not knowing wtf was even going on. Ulfric himself claims in private that his sword ended it. - At Helgen, they said you shouted the King to death? "Not entirely true, though not entirely false either. Any Nord can learn the Way of the Voice by studying with the Greybeards, given enough ambition and dedication. My shouting Torygg to the ground proved he had neither. However, it was my sword piercing his heart that killed him." lust for power: he has not.... in fact he has explicitly expressed that the only reason he seeks it is to protect his people. Not a hint for personal gain to be found. Heck, The guy eschews calling his seat in Windhelm his. Instead referring to it as Ysgramors and his own fathers seat. elderscrolls.fandom.com/wiki/Ulfric_Stormcloak_(Skyrim) 1) How exactly? They way of the voice is just that a 'way'. Just as Yoga, bushido, kendo, etc are ways of doing 'something'. Its the same as when Luke left Yoda to find Han and Leia to help them. Ulfric couldnt stand sitting idle and do nothing, he had to give up his teachings, abandon it all together and join the fight to protect the world below. He even consciously chose to avoid using the voice and if he did to not use it lightly. - When asked about the shout: So you know how to Shout? "Yes. Although I rarely use my training. The Greybeards believe the Voice should be used only for worship of Kynareth. I have... fallen from their strict teaching, but I still don't feel it should be used lightly. Not all of Arngeir's lecturing was wasted, it seems." 2) He joined the legion out of a sense of Duty to what he once swore to protect, what he once believed to be true and just. He 'used' to see the imperium as a positive something until they betrayed everything that they had fought for to begin with. All that blood and suffering for nothing. 3) You mean how they made him angry and to believe that his eventual spilling of beans at the hand of a torturer was crucial to the imperial city falling? despite it having already done so? And for them to set him free and watch the results? Sure...'That's' working together...I'm sure he got a free house and several scratch off lottery tickets to go with that as well. He was used. 4) Again, not murdered. in the eyes of the imperials perhaps, sure. Even to the last moment before you'd end up killing Ulfric, they (non nord imperials) show a complete ignorance and disdain for any tradition or custom that the Nords have. No wonder 'they' would spit on that custom as well and call it a murder. And you mean how he first replaced corrupt and imperial leaning jarls with his supporters? Which is exactly what the imperials do as well? It's a necessary evil as much as becoming high King was in order to pull Skyrim out of the mess it was in. It wouldn't be pretty but he'd get the job done. If you are going to slander my knowledge, please provide links to your 'facts' instead of spewing imperial dogma. that's not helping the debate nor is it contributing to a meaningful, entertaining or interesting conversation. If you wish to pick this up further, ill see when i have the time.

@@MADhorseKD Ulfric murdered Torygg because duels for the throne are never to the death in Skyrim. Ever spoken to Jorunn the Skald-King? Ulfric does have a desire for power, and puts it above his people. We see this first-hand when the man hesitates to go to a peace council to fight the Dragons and keep his people safe because it ''might make him lose support for the throne''. That man does not give a damn about his subjects. 1) The Way of the Voice is not anything like Yoga. It's a way of worship; Kyne gave the Voice to Man to best Dragons, not for their own selfish pursuits. Ulfric, by using the Voice for personal gain, abuse this gift of Kyne. The man shouted people to their deaths at Markarth and used it agaist Torygg, both instances of nothing but personal greed. 2) He joined the Legion because he saw a way to further increase his power. He had now mastered two words of power, this was his chance to master his way of the sword. 3) After the Great War, Ulfric was all too happy to collaborate with the Thalmor. Direct and cooperative contact, and him proving his worth as an asset to the Thalmor. Man even provided them with a neat little excuse to send their Justiciars to Skyrim, only didn't count on being backstabbed by his Thalmor overlords. 4) Ulfric did murder Torygg, that's canon. Ulfric's the one that damns the Moot and the Jarls. Ulfric's the one that keeps a fair Moot from meeting, not the Empire. Your ignorance on this topic is laughable.

Cow milk actually weakens your bones due to its amino acids that your body needs to leech calcium from your bones in order to neutralize. Additionally, we must not forget that it needs to be boiled (pasteurized) prior to consumption, lest we get sick from the bacteria, blood, and cow pus. Even then, most of the world (about two-thirds) is lactose intolerant. Oh, and dairy also has lots of estrogen, so it can quite literally make you weaker
