In this video, I react for the first time to Pearl Jam performing "Black" from their MTV Unplugged Album. In this video, I analyse their amazing performance, explain and demonstrate Eddie Vedder's vocal techniques and I'll tell you what I think made it so great. What a soulful performance from this grunge rock band!

I also used some AMAZING Austrian Audio Headphones which I absolutely recommend austrian.audio/hi-x55/ You can find them on KZfaq too: @AustrianAudioVideos

I'm so excited to be a part of your singing journey, It's one that truly never ends.
Love you forever,

I wonder if he could sing this song this emotionally at his age now... When young, that pain of unrequited love is so overwhelming, as you age, that kind of love very very rarely stings so much. Absolute legend, you could see him feeling it, hear him feeling it...

Fun fact: Eddie Vedder got laryngitis the day before this performance and almost cancelled but decided to perform anyway. That's why he sounds more raspy than usual and shy's away a little from some of the bigger notes. Also the head shake thing on the 2nd verse was because he sang the wrong line. He was signaling to the band that he realized he messed up and that he would find his way back, he jumps back on the correct line without missing a beat. All that going on and delivered this gem of a performance.... true professional.

This ended up being probably the best MTV unplugged. I still give it a watch-through now & then. There are three analysts that completely stand out for me. I won't name names (ok Julia and Elizabeth) but TFVM, being an actual fairy, generates that magical pixie dust (which as we all know) transforms everything into chocolaty love-filled endless first morning sips of coffee. She's an alchemist; a hyper-accelerator of artistic expression, transmuting her own experiences into these extremely dopamine inducing digests for people to love and appreciate together forever. From the editing, the intro sequence, the vocal knowledge, the buttery voice, the humor, the emotivity, the articulation, the cute-ability and on and on; this is a whole new medium of artistic journalism of which she can only one day be regarded as a pioneering founder, I'm sure. Honestly I'm just so grateful for this type of content as it literally brings much needed hope and joy into the world. I think you managed to nail that series of musical eras in remarkably short order. I went through a ‘70s phase and I was struck by the great songwriting in general and of course the heavy rock aspect. But as a child in the ‘80s I remember hearing a lot of lite songs I disliked, with synth solos and whatnot very common. Then I got to grow up in the ‘90s, thank God. It was so fortunate to have songs and bands like this for a soundtrack to my adolescence and beyond. Things went back to being heavy and real. And speaking of real, Eddie has always struck me as nothing less. Especially here, when by the end of it he is just injecting his whole heart into the performance.

Definitely I highly doubt alot of singers realise how indeapth it can get when just originally creating a song from the heart. I have never even bothered to understand a song from its lyrics but how it makes me feel., my cousin does but if you watched metallica on st anger they would grab an overall feeling and find a word to suit, I think so many people get mixed up in what they think the artist is saying they miss what is is there to be felt

Grunge music is awesome and hit me at the right time in my life when it first came out. I love the raw emotion that they deliver so effectively. Alice and Chains, Pearl Jam, nirvana, etc… I love to see people who are more classically trained analyze and appreciate their approach to delivering music. What a wonderful different approach that reaches so many people. 🙏☮️🕉️

Great reaction. I learned a lot. Not just about great singing techniques but also about what it takes to make that emotional connection with the audience. I really believe that when Eddie sings this song, for him the audience is no longer there and he is just there with his love. Just as many of us envision the loves that could have been when we listen to this master piece.

I was 19 when this was album released and did not appreciate this song as much as I do now. That being said, I got goosebumps watching this on MTV then and still do to this day. This performance is wonderful. Watch again and pay attention to his body language as the song progresses. You can tell he is really feeling the lyrics. BTW, this was a song about a girlfriend after a bad break up. He later got back with her and married her. Great reaction, as usual!

The song Black is a song about Eddie's girlfriend in highschool, they had to break up for private reasons and so he left Chicago and moved to San Diego and there he met Beth in 1984 and they got married in 1994. Oceans is about Beth and then they divorced in 2000 and then he met his new wife Jill Vedder and they have 2 daughters Olivia and Harper and their still happily married. That's the story. 😊💓🤘✌️

She is the ONLY one I NEVER fast forward through a lot of the commentary....And why is that you may ask 🤔 because it's as good as the music she is reaction to! And this is a rare thing from most reactors and vocal coaches on KZfaq.

All grunge rock is pure 100% honesty in all the lyrics!! That’s why it became so popular it wasn’t about money and fame and hooking up w women like the 80’s. It was about the music, pain and real life struggles!!

I love the combination of your impressive expertise with raw emotion. It's an absolute joy to witness, especially when experiencing the same emotions along with you. Thank you! I encourage you to watch his version of this song, live in Italy, shortly after we lost Chris Cornell, one of his closest friends. When he starts ad-libbing towards the end, he breaks down emotionally while singing "come back, come back," and it feels like my soul is being shredded. Jeff is your favorite singer, he's in my top 3, along with Chris. Ironically, when Jeff died, they did a little tribute piece on tv for him, and Chris was in it (as I am sure you know they were close) and it's spooky how he talks about how finding out Jeff was gone felt surreal. Because that's how I *still* feel about Chris being gone. It's completely unhealthy, but I have never completely dealt with his loss and I am still unable to hear him sing without immediately losing it, so I just don't listen. I'm the same way with Scott Hutchinson of Frightened Rabbit. I just can't listen to him yet, it's so painful. 😢

So the reason he shakes his head like that during the first chorus is that he sang the wrong lyrics - he sang the second chorus lyrics. I'm always impressed that he just kept going instead of stopping or hesitating, he never breaks the flow of the song despite catching himself making a mistake like that.

You are completely right. None of this is fake or planned out. He is a ball of emotion during this song. Just him rocking back and forth on a stool so violently proves this. Every note and how it's sung has a special feeling only he knows. He can barely hold on. And you get those same feelings (or goosebumps) that I always have listening for 30 years. So, seeing you feel those the first time you listened, makes me feel not alone and hopeful...also, your voice is truly amazing,! 💖

One of the best songs of all time for me. Along the same lines of very emotional grunge i deeply recommend: "Mad Season - Wake up" (live in Seattle) - makes me cry very time just as "black" does. I enjoy watching your reaction videos so much because you both truely FEEL the music (which is very visible) and DESCRIBE the technics behind it so very comprehensible.

Many people try to define "grunge" by how the music sounds or how it's assembled. These people miss the point. Most artists in this genre sound VERY different, but the one thing that stands out, and the reason this music is so important to those of us who lived through it, is the emotional content. It's about making you FEEL.

New subscriber now. You had me at “Jeff Buckley is my favorite singer.” (I actually met him in Memphis, at the dive bar he played weekly-testing new material for his upcoming album he didn’t live to record-about a month before he drowned. Such a careless, senseless death.) I’m also a big Pearl Jam fan, so I’m glad you reacted to this song, especially this version. I remember watching it when it first aired-in my college dorm room.

I'd like to add that Ed is also very special because he was originally going to be an actor and he credits his drama teacher for helping him come out of his shell to find his voice so his performances always have that extra intensity because he knows it's a form of expression that's intertwined in the music. The song Yellow Led Better is about his Drama teacher. (Yes I am the #1 Pearl Jam fan in the world.) Also as a request I would love to see what you think of the singer of Black Circle which is a Pearl Jam tribute band BUT NEVER in my life have I heard another singer replicate Eddie's voice or any singers voice for that matter as well as Lenny Prado. Please consider doing a video about them because Eds voice is so unique and I'm dying to hear what you think of Lenny! They're the ONLY PJ tribute band that Pearl Jam personally approves of. 💙💙

The ‘broken glass’ to which he refers is not only a brilliant metaphor, but describes a shattered framed photo of the couple. This song, alongside Joy Division’s ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’, Mr. Bungle’s ‘Pink Cigarette’, and Megadeth’s brilliant pair ‘In My Darkest Hour’ and ‘Tornado Of Souls’, make for my five favourite breakup songs. The first three are good for when you’re still in the maudlin phase-where you drink a lot of vodka tonics and feel sorry for yourself. The Megadeth tunes are for that stage in which your angry that they made you feel like a kicked dog, AND you’re angry with YOURSELF for ever letting them get close enough to make you feel like a kicked dog. P.S.: ‘Pink Cigarette’ is sung by the inimitable Mike Patton, who is neck-and-neck with Freddie Mercury as the greatest male rock vocalist of all time. It would be a good song for the channel! Mike Patton always draws a crowd, too.
