Stimulator fly pattern great attractor with huge amounts of float-ability. This well dressed pattern is for fishing rough fast flowing water, where it can be seen easily at distance and it floats like a cork. Stimulators are versatile, and although look difficult, are relatively easy to tie, again, it’s all about proportions! Visit my site thefeatherbender.com

I like the trick of wrapping the wing around itself before cinching it down so that it doesn’t roll around the hook. Been tying for a long time but hadn’t seen this before. Thank you!

Really nicely tied. Now I know what I was doing wrongly. I had too much thickness in the abdomen I tied it way too loosely. Thank goodness I glued them or they would be spinning all around the hook. All the best and thanks for sharing. Sean

This pattern is my favorite dry fly pattern to use. I put it on a dry rod and leave it until the season is over. I tie mine in the same manner and it has never let me down. I have fished it over water that has been flogged to death by fly fishers who try hard and turned up a lot of fish. Tying them the way you do gives the fly more longevity. As I said, I put one on and leave it on, unless I hook a tree and lose it, I will stick with the same one.

@@Thefeatherbender geez really? That is pretty cool! One of the reasons I believe the red or orange Stimulator is so successful here in southern Alberta is that our trout season sadly opens fully just at the tail end of the Salmon Fly hatch Pteronicus Californicus, I think I am close to right. Once they hatch/emerge, the fish are tuned in for the rest of the year or season. I have had more luck with the floss body than a dubbed body, but that may just be me. When I work with floss I keep a damp cloth on my desk because keeping my fingers damp or moist, helps me keep the floss smooth when I wrap it.

Beautiful tie there Mr. Clark. Liked the tie in tip on the wing especially with Elk hair. I have tied Stimulators before but in an entirely different method. I think I will use your method from now on. Appears to be much easier than my method. Thanks for the tutorial it was fantastic. Thanks again Mate. Best to you and family.

Hi, I think that going up brown (roux) hackle on the abdomen and grizly hackle in the chest is more efficient and addictive. It was then the principle of the French Tricolor of Bresson which proved its attractiveness everywhere thanks precisely to the combination of the two mixed colors brown (roux) and grey.

The winging tie in tip is especially good if tying in a wing material such as calf tail or squirrel, as that single loop of thread around just the hair really locks in the hair, besides keeping it on top of the hook. I have found over the years that a different hook, such as Daiichi 1280, which a 2X long dry fly hook is much better at getting consistent hook ups. I fish primarily high gradient rivers and have found that adding a thin closed cell foam under body and leaving the body hackle full help to improve the float ability of the fly. I like how you pay attention to the little details. Really first rate job. I will definitely be reccomending your channel.

Thanks, I try and tie patterns as close to the original as I know that I can, but if I have used a pattern alot and made small adjustments that I believe improve the pattern I include these.

Another great pattern. I can see potential in hatches of great red sedge and for other applications. I'm sure it will float well and though it looks a bit strange I'm sure it is deadly. Must tie some of these. I would think allowing it to drag across the tail of the pool it would be of interest to sea trout.

This really turned out great 👍. I disagree with stripping one side of the hackle for the body though-while this looks better, I think that you might lose a little flotation.

Thanks, you can go both ways, there is so much floatation on this pattern, you could rib it with lead wire and it will still float! LOL.

Hi Chad, for sure it will. But remember that the three most useful hackle colours are - black, brown & grizzle generally speaking.

Barry, Kaufman was known to incorporate wiggly legs into the Stimulator. Had you considered doing that? I've used Flexifloss in the same way, which, because it can be split down, can be made to perform all manner of Argentine tango moves.

Another beauty, Barry! Hey, I noticed that you wound the wire up the shank in parallel with the hackle stem, rather than across it, or it appeared so to me. Was that intentional?
@Thefeatherbender
@Thefeatherbender 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jonny and Thanks. If I have wound it the same way as the hackle then its a honest mistake on my behalf! Lol.
@cachi-7878
@cachi-7878 4 жыл бұрын
The purpose of the wire is to prevent the hackle from unraveling once you’ve caught some fish. So counter-wound is the way to go to accomplish this correctly. It looks nice the way he did it but it is not effective.

Barry a quick question. Almost every time you do a whip finish, you do two sets of two or three wraps. Is this more secure do you feel or is it a habit. Thanks, I am just curious, no critique intended. Stay safe!
