Welcome to the Rod Building Basics Series, designed specifically to assist newcomers in the art of rod building. In this series, we'll delve into various topics to provide step-by-step guidance for those just starting out. These videos are zoomed in and done at a slow pace, ensuring clarity and attention to detail, so you can confidently build your own fishing rods.
In this particular video, we'll focus on a fundamental part of custom rod building: basic trim bands. Guide wrap trim bands are one topic that can be approached in many different ways. I'll demonstrate a quick and easy method that I personally find faster and more convenient than other techniques. By incorporating these easy to make trim bands into your guide wraps, you'll witness a significant improvement in the appearance of your thread work, with minimal hassle.
Do you have any questions or need further clarification? What do you think about this easy trim band technique? Feel free to leave your thoughts and questions in the comments section below! Your engagement is highly encouraged, as it helps foster a vibrant community of rod builders supporting one another.
Thank you for joining us on this exciting rod building journey! Get ready to elevate your skills and create exceptional fishing rods with our Rod Building Basics Series.

Terrible you can see the blank through it and uneven tension..

This is simply a demonstration of technique for trim bands and not something I was actually building. I mention on a lot of my videos (I might not have mentioned it on this video) that I’m watching what I’m doing through a camera screen. I do it this way so I can get the camera as close as possible so people can see what is going on. I can barely see what I’m doing through a small screen as I’m doing it. It isn’t an easy thing to do. It isn’t uneven tension, the rod building jigs I sell have spring steel constant tensioning rods that keeps tension on the thread very even. It is 100% me not being able to see what I’m doing because of the camera. I try to tell people they will be able to do a much better job than I’m able to do with the techniques I demonstrate because they won’t have to do it while watching through a camera screen. I probably forgot to mention it on this video so I should do better and remember to tell that to everyone on every video.

I pinned your comment so others may see my reply since I apparently didn’t mention how I have to shoot these videos in order to get these shots so close to the wrap. The technique is the focus of the video, not so much the result. I’d challenge anyone to do a good job while watching through a camera screen 😂

I use a similar method that locks the trim thread under the main wrap. I’m going to try your technique. Looks a bit more secure than my style. Hate it when the trim bands get loose. Thanks, Sam

I used the hand wrapper I make and sell. You can look at those here if you haven’t seen them: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/prSHe65hmNKsoqc.htmlsi=brZOPafHlKH2DwJc This is my store: 5286af.myshopify.com/ You can do the same thing on a setup that you can make yourself for free like like I show here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ratza86lz9K9hJ8.htmlsi=v4xwJ3cFjPk6gneX The difference is the jigs I sell make it easier to do. There are power wrappers and hand wrappers of all sorts available and if you know what you are doing, you can get any of them to work out for you. What it really comes down to is what does the wrapper offer you that you want? To figure that out you can try something like the cardboard box jig for free. A jig like mine allows you to back up several turns to correct a mistake without loosing you thread tension. You might find that you would like that feature after using a cardboard jig (I’m so used to being able to backup without loosing tension that I find it difficult to wrap without it). So that really doesn’t give you a direct answer 😂 I enjoy making and selling my jigs, but I would rather someone get what they feel most comfortable using so they enjoy the hobby and stick with it. Cost is a factor, features are a factor, convenience is a factor…but the reality is almost anything will work if you practice enough to get good with your wrapping technique.

There is no fee to subscribe to my KZfaq channel. If you click the subscribe button and click on the icon that looks like a bell there will be an option to select “ALL”. If you select ALL, then every time I upload a new video to KZfaq you will get a notification saying that I have uploaded a new video and there will be a link that you can click to go watch the new video. I do not upload a lot of videos, but you will be able to know when I do. Also, when you subscribe to my channel, you may notice more of my videos showing up in your recommended videos. That’s about it for the most part. KZfaq tends to promote channels that have more people interacting in the comments sections and people clicking the “Like” button. Also, the more subscribers a channel has, the more KZfaq tends to promote that channel’s videos. So by commenting, liking videos and subscribing to my channel you are actually helping me out more than most people realize. None of those things cost the viewer any money, but they actually help me to earn a little bit more revenue from KZfaq in advertising revenue sharing. I get a portion of the advertising fees that KZfaq makes from the advertising that runs before, during and after my videos. It takes me a while to make each video. By earning a little money from KZfaq, it makes taking that time and effort to make a video worthwhile. Viewers get the information they want from me and I get a little money for my time and efforts, but there is no cost to the viewer other than their time. Not too bad of a deal for everyone all the way around in my opinion! Thanks for watching and asking about subscribing to my channel! I hope you will subscribe and continue watching more of my videos. It helps me out and hopefully the information I give you in those videos is helpful to you as well!
