Cod Fishing and Fossil Hunting on the Yorkshire Coast | The Fish Locker
Shore fishing for cod on the North Yorkshire coast is at its best in the winter months. Today we fish a rough ground shore mark near Whitby on the North Yorkshire Jurassic Coast, explaining the rigs and showing how to bait up with cart. Not ideal fishing conditions we just enjoy a day on the shore. Combing the area and finding hundreds of amazing fossilised creatures from the Jurassic period 180 million years ago. Ammonites, Bellomites and fascinating rock formations. A few fish, some enjoyable time out on the coast and some winter sunshine. What more could you ask for?
Here is the link for Tom's article on cart fishing bait. hookpoint.co.uk/in-the-cart/

I normally don't comment, but I'm a student about to go into ecology, and your passion when explaining things makes me feel like I'm just a kid again, being fascinated by nature. Had a rough childhood and your channel is a great comfort, seeing you lovingly interact with James heals my inner child, honestly. Much love and thank you for your content, you are an amazing person and a great father

We each and all have our angels and our demons. One of the things I have learned and which guides me is; the parent you had is not nearly as important as the parent you are. Take care and have a wonderful day. 💙

@@TheFishLocker I totally agree with this. I would add that with the lack of overall leadership governing our lands, plan B for us folk on ground level, is to look after those seeking info and help. YT is a great community space for maths, language, science, history, geography and technology. I love learning about gardening eco friendly. Foraging for food that was once classed as a poor person food but is actually good for you. Samphire is a good one. The cross of Asparagus and Horse mere. Up market restaurants are now driving the price up on this cheaper alternative to asparagus. It is more tender and smaller and more readily available in wetlands areas. I also i like learning about history in an equal setting. Whilst we cannot change the past, we should use the unveiled information to educate people better. I am too from a broken home but during my time i educated myself in my diverse journey. Lets just say not everything is black and white

7:00 Wow! You took me right back to 1974 and made me feel like a 9-year-old again when I recall my late mother took me and my brother on holiday to the South coast and we went fossil hunting. It was a simple joy that only cost that of a hammer and a bit of petrol and we spent several hours searching. I had completely forgotten about this and it came straight back to me. I think the UK is uniquely blessed (despite its small size) with fossils, and the fact you can find them on a fairly average walk is quite amazing.

Evolution of ammonites is amazing. Yiu can age them by the suture lines. The more complex the younger they are. Lived for about 400 million years and more closely related to squid, cuttlefish than todays nautilus. The largest were over 2m! Amazing.

To: The Fish Locker - They are indeed! You may already know that the bodies remained in the outer shell of the new growth and that the separation of the previous 'sutures' follows the 'Golden Ratio', otherwise known as a 'Fibonnaci sequence'. Ha,ha! i could be described as an 'old fossil' since as a human it is something that we possess too.

I remember the good old days beach combing at flamborough head, end of north marine road as a kid, all up Whitby and filey, yes to live rite on the end near south landing at flamborough, I can remember having tea at the table and the light house flashing on the back wall of the dinette whilst eating, ow man I miss those days so much. This post brought back some good old memories for me John lad, some good old memories indeed. I remember hearing the 3 bangs signaling the RNLI guys and fella next door would run out jump in his car and head for north landing on the end of north marine road flamborough and me and my grandad would follow and see them off. I remember as a kid also use to spend many many hours on thornwick bay just looking for washed up bits , I called it treasure as a kid but now I think it’s called pollution🧐🤷🏼‍♂️. I remember my ever first fishing trip out to sea, it was 33 years ago on a boat called ( Rachel Kay ) from bridlington Harbour ) it was freezing and foggy but loved absolutely every minor it, believe it or not the boat is still there in use in the harbour today,!!. I caught my first ever fish , a place, and it was in the pan with some butter a few hours later👍,,,always appreciate your hard work and editing hours a day John and all and always look forward to the next post, best wishes to you and family and all 👍🤝🇬🇧👨🏻‍🍳

Absolutely loved this video, I'm predominantly a lure fisherman so I do a lot of walking and love going to New places and thanks to your videos I'm now walking /fishing with eyes wide open , wether it be bird life , plant life , geology it really is fascinating and when you stop to take it all in ...kinda makes you feel alive ! Thanks John

@@nicholaskemp2246 I am from there. The beaches up there are nothing like the beaches in the southwest. The sand in Cornwall is like the Caribbean. The Whitby beaches are nothing like them. It’s just dismal, it’s no wonder the majority of locals are all so depressed. Most uninspiring place I’ve ever lived. No one that stays in the town has any ambition past finishing work and going to the pub.
