Thank you. I find being tired, dehydrated, or hungry really make the notes very sharp. A warm drink, long notes for 15 mintues, and another easy tune for 15 minutes usually breaks the cycle of bad tone-frustration-more bad notes!

Great tips ! (and yes I have found your singing & playing that I was looking for ! Thanks) - in bad days, I love playing, as you said, some pieces I love, slow ones (slow movements of concertos and sonatas), keeping the focus in straightening my posture, and lowering my breathing point, in order to have sufficient support. Moreover, I make sure my air intake is relaxed, deep and relaxed, as when yawning. Tensed air intake gets me a tensed tone, a petit one. But I also love going into improvisation, because my body feels more free, and I really improvise towards the richness and fullness of sound. Like when you try to wake the resonance of a cave, listening far, and letting my body fill with music. Thank you very much for your quality contents, and your relaxed mood, inviting to just have fun !

Refuse to be terribly harsh with myself as its only for my benefit that I learn this amazing instrument. The bending of notes is a common practice with many stringed instruments, by I mostly the Lute, Acoustic and Electric Guitars, Violin, Viola, Cello, and Bass. Thanks for all the instruction.

Note-bending. What a good idea! It makes low (or any) note practice interesting while learning to instantly tune the note to what you hear.

It is tricky yes! I always tell my students that double up that in a way, once they have mastered the embouchure changes they actually have an advantage though because they will have developed a really flexible embouchure which gives them many possibilities :D

Thanks! Ian Mullin's take on this also works great, growling our lowest tone while playing a middle B, try it? Idea is to get major distortion, not unison, amazing results ! Also have found playing my alto flute for a while first is a nice tone improvement trick for me (because I suck most of the time).

Thanks for the great advice. I'm a beginner and you answered some of the questions I've had about developing good tone. A question I had today while practicing was whether it was ok to turn the flute slightly forward or backward to get a better tone. It felt natural to me but I didn't want to develop a bad habit. On some days it's seem very difficult to get a good tone and even during a single practice session it can go from good to bad and then I'll hit some notes that come out with very good tone. I'm frustrated by the inconsistency.
@TheFlutePractice
@TheFlutePractice 7 жыл бұрын
Hi! It is absolutely okay to do this yes. There are just a few things to be careful of. If you turn in too much you will get a more focused sound but you may not get a very open or loud sound but if you turn out too much you may get a sound that is very spread and not focused enough...As always I will encourage experimenting. I know it is frustrating but all the muscles in your lips are working overtime with your brain and ear to formulate the best 'recipe' for a good sound and this just takes time, patience, mindful practice and oh more time and patience :D you sound like you are on a good path though!

I made a video about low notes on the flute. Have you checked it out? Is it helpful?kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aaqAnal4u6-wnYk.html If you are playing a flute with holes make sure you are covering all of them properly. Maybe move down the flute one note at a time and see when the problem starts.

hey ! i wanna start studying flute but i can't buy an expansive flute. can you recommend me something cheap but good? i found a thomann flute. pls help me :(
@TheFlutePractice
@TheFlutePractice 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Nicolae. So glad to hear you are starting the flute! A few questions: Which country are you from and what is your budget? I personally do not know the Thomann flute. Is it a new flute or second hand? Maybe ask the reddit community of someone has heard of the instrument. I struggled to find reviews. I would really recommend a Yamaha. Great quality for a low price! Other brands to lookout for: Jupiter, Azumi, Di Zhao. Other brands that are not too bad are Pearl, Armstrong, Gemeinhardt. Second hand flute are great but only if you can test the flutes, have someone test the flute for you or know and trust the buyer. Buying a poor quality flute may result in you having to invest more money in it later for repairs and maintenance. Also buying a more 'recognized' brand means you will be able to resell it more easily. Yamaha flutes have great resell value! That is what I recommend for my students. Good luck :) Maybe other suggestions from the community?

+The Flute Practice I am from Romania. I think a yamaha is the best choice even if it is pretty expansive here ( my dad's sallary is like 300 euros ( 1200 rons in Romania) and the flute is like 500-600 . I will talk with my parents about that. Which is the difference between opened holes and closed holes flute?
@TheFlutePractice
@TheFlutePractice 8 жыл бұрын
This is a big question. The open hole flutes are often not as suitable for beginners as it is more difficult to close the wholes. The open wholes do have an advantage that they force your fingers into a more or less correct position (because you have to cover the holes). The open holes are also good for some intonation problems and some extended techniques. But these are really only beneficial for more advanced players and so you can do without. Yes. The Yamahas are a bit more expensive but really worth it in the long run. I played on an old second hand Yamaha for many years! It was still in a good condition though. Are there any second hand options?
