Sir David Attenborough discusses Sharpe's Birds of Paradise with Production Director Joe Whitlock Blundell.
The Folio Society is proud to reproduce, for the first time, all 79 plates of Sharpe’s Birds of Paradise in book form at their actual size, with a foreword by David Attenborough. At the time when this remarkable book was first produced, lithographic plate reproduction had reached its peak of subtlety and precision. The illustrations showed these fabulous birds in radiant colour and exquisite detail. With this edition, you now have the opportunity to own an extraordinary work of natural history.
At the end of the 19th century, Richard Bowdler Sharpe published his Monograph of the Paradiseidae and Ptilonorhynchidae. Dedicated entirely to birds of paradise and bower-birds, it is one of the greatest bird books and, for many, the most beautiful ever created.
The illustrations showed these fabulous birds in radiant colour and exquisite detail. Their beauty is breathtaking - from the Great Sicklebilled Bird of Paradise, with its shimmering plumage and long, sweeping tail feathers, to the Emperor Bird of Paradise with its foamy white and golden plumage. The book is an ornithological and artistic triumph.
The Folio Society produces beautifully crafted collector’s editions of the world’s greatest books, each with unique illustrations or specially researched photographs throughout. Find the books you love at foliosociety.com.

Our apologies, the podcast had to be uploaded again, therefore all comments are automatically removed, we had every intention of replacing your comment and had saved it earlier, please see below. Now this is a good FS upload! Seeing the book being unwrapped, opened, felt, read, and admired. To top it all you have a recipient of the book who is both famous and appreciative of the book's context. lt00000QMUL 1 day ago

David is driving me a little crazier each time he rubs his hands all over the pages of this beautiful book.

I love this man, and what he does for nature. The passion he has for our amazing planet is admirable, even in his late eighties he is still diving and climbing trees. I saw the BBC documentary...and as always...it was amazing. Thanks for the upload :)

This is amazing! I thought Carola's Parotia was photographed displaying before. Western Parotia have been filmed in Planet Earth and I think Attenborough in Paradise.

To bad it is out of the price range for common folks. It looks so beautiful. Maybe some rich folks will share it so I can look at it also. Very cool video and such gracious men.

If comments are to be removed then why bother allowing comments in the first place? Why was my comment removed? It was actually complimentary. I feel very offended and would like to know the reason. Alternatively, just suspended the comments section from this particular video! A very disgruntled Folio Society Member.
