NEW! Arteza 36 Half Pan Watercolor Set Review
Today we are going to take a look at the new Arteza 36 half pan watercolor set. It currently sells for $34.99 on the Arteza website: shrsl.com/15rha and there is also a 12 pan set for $24.99 shrsl.com/15rhf The 36 set is a better deal and the color options would be more useful plus you get 24 extra colors for an extra $10. You can get 10% off with coupon code: PROMO10 and all items ship free making it a low barrier to entry for this or any of their products. You can also find this set on Amazon for $35.99 and there is a $5 off coupon today: amzn.to/2N5BHC8
Here is a link to the swatching/color mixing stamps: shrsl.com/15rqd
I have been using Arteza products for about 10 months and I have been really impressed with the quality for the price. The only Arteza product that I didn't love was the tube watercolors (they were OK for a student grade but didn't knock my socks off and I thought there were better student options for around the same price) so when a viewer told me about the pan sets I knew I wanted to give them a try as I often prefer the pan formulations of student/craft grade supplies over tube.
*Note, these paints are under their "premium" line but I am going to classify them as student grade for reasons I mention in the video.
Pros:
Price
Sturdy metal tin palette that is bright white and the paint does not bead up on. Also the mixing flap stays level and doesn't flop on the table at an angel. *the tin is about 1/4" shorter than other 48 half pan tins which makes it sturdier but other inserts will not fit in it nor can you sneak an extra half pan in the row.
Good for glazing as colors are hard to lift and quite transparent.
Wide range of vibrant colors and no white
Includes a nice waterbrush
Cons (and I hold Arteza to a high standard so I might be a bit picky here)
No pigment info or lightfast ratings
The colors had a tendency to stain so lifting could be difficult (but good for glazing)
Some of the "fingers" that held the pans in needed to be adjusted with pliers to reach the top of the pans.
Bottom Line: These paints are fun and inexpensive. They work great on most papers even the really inexpensive Arteza paper. In my tests they worked best wet on dry as they were easy to glide around dry paper with a brush but I found them slow to disperse in a large wet in wet wash. They acted more like Eastern watercolors in that respect. If you like to do loose flowers (like the roses I showed in the video) or paint stamped designs they are a great choice because you can control the flow of the paint better and it stays where you put it but if you prefer large wet in wet washes these might not be the best (or you might need to add some ox-gall as a dispersant/flow enhancer.) They glaze and layer very well but lifting is a challenge so save your whites as you are painting or plan to use mixed media should you want bright white highlights later. At $35 they are a nice set of paints and there is room in the tim if you want to add more (I suggest adding an ultramarine blue) in the future. If you need some inexpensive paints these are a good bet!

My 12 half pan set is currently in the delivery van, but I've been so pleased with the (many) Arteza products so far, all purchased on a Social Security income, that I'm really looking forward to doing more than swatching and creating card backgrounds before I turn 80 in February. The only physical WC class I attended years ago produced a monstrosity that the fridge refused to display on its door and put me off the medium mightily, so you're now my teacher with your thorough videos. Keeping the experimentation stash I've amassed -- unused -- to learn the difference between WC apples and oranges. So grateful for what you do for us, Lindsay.

Just an FYI When Arteza says "Premium" that means it is their 'intermediate' grade, they claim to have a 'Classic' line of products that are 'student' grade' but I do not see any of their products with that label. In fact, even their 'Kids' products all say Premium. This is a copy paste from an Arteza employee on their youtube channel: "Expert - artist grade, premium - intermediate , classic is student grade." --- I do like some of their products but I was annoyed when I received their 'Premium' watercolor pencils thinking it was their artist grade ones. (I bought a 48 set thinking it was just a smaller version of the 'Expert' 72 set) Turn out they only have one set of 'Expert' watercolor pencils and I got shipped their 'Premium' pencils. So I was bummed, annoyed, sent them a email explaining how confusing this is and I should be able to get the classifications on their website, not a random youtube comment. So with that said, love their waterbrushes and I'm interested in this 36 pan set and leave my sakura koi for plein air painting. Thanks for the review :)

Another awesome review! Love the landscape and can't wait to see the tutorial! :) I've actually been loving Arteza and have been super happy with their growth since they first started out. They're not perfect, but they seem to be listening and paying attention to the steps they need to take to keep consumers loyal. And their prices are very fair, considering that they're more student/intermediate level at best and that they usually have at least an extra 10% coupon you can use too. I've been recommending the brand for people to try out compared to just a company like Artist's Loft (which I also enjoy, but they can be hit or miss depending on the products) And so far no one has majorly complained about the products they've bought from them since it's mainly clear what you're in for to begin with. And worse case scenario, someone ends up not liking them but at least their wallet didn't take a major hit compared to what they could have tried.

I was happy to see you review this set. I have plenty of paint but I'm always wanting to try something new. Not sure if that is some sort of art hoarding thing or not. LOL!!!! I found it interesting that you use a magic eraser for your palettes. I just discovered this trick a few weeks ago by accident. Since I'm fairly new to watercolor all my palettes are new and were driving me bonkers with the paint beading up. Most especially the plastic ones. So I started experimenting to see if I could find something that would work without being overly abrasive. I almost felt bad to rough them up though. They seem to stain more easily now but like you said just run the eraser over them and it cleans right up. My once hated plastic palettes are now among some of my faves.

Great review! I was curious too and used them in a papercrafting video on my channel this week. I agree with you. Didn’t love the tubes. The gouache tubes are ok. They seemed good for a starter set for someone to get a feeling for watercolor. They reminded me of Prima. The tin though... nice. I had mixing trouble and they really didn’t flow/disperse in water. They stayed where I put it. Still... fun set good for beginners. Not a bad price and not a bad option for papercrafters. I wouldn’t use them in my professional paintings, but that’s ok. 😊

It's disappointing that they seem to have not gotten back about pigment info. I've asked a few times and they normally have great customer service, but seem to be avoiding providing an answer on this issue. Their half pans look similar to the master's touch half pans in the plastic 18 half pan set that comes with a mini waterbrush. Those pans are slightly bigger than the half pans from their 12 and 48 sets, for some reason, and the paints from the 12 and 18 sets are noticeably different-looking than the 48 set. They felt a little different when I touched them, too. I wonder if Arteza and master's touch pans from the 18 color set came from the same supply company. I wonder if there is a way to send you a few so you could compare them.

Let’s see how many haters will comment on this, lol, but anyways, I’m looking for a set of watercolors for a gift for a 15yo artist that does some amazing work. Would you recommend a “student” grade of paints like this, or spend a little more for a smaller set of artist grade paints? I’m trying to take into consideration how valuable a limited amount of colors is so she can learn to mix colors easily, or do you think that really matters at this stage because she is on the younger side? I really would value your opinion on this matter. She is a wonderfully creative student who is seriously considering making a career out of watercolor painting. I always love your reviews and have made many purchases because of them. Lol my husband would disagree lol. According to him I have a problem. Hope you and yours are well. I think you will only find love here lol.. I think it's really awesome that you care about a 15 year old's creative practice and the supplies they use. In my experience the Cotman line is great for beginners. The new pallets that came out that fan out also seem to be great paints and teens seem to love them as well. M. Graham are my favorite, with Qor a close second. That being said, the paper seems to be an important thing to consider also, and even if the paints are cheaper, as long as you have a good paper then it makes a big difference in the end result. I hope this helps. Many Blessings to you and yours, Stacy

Benny Chavez I suggest you see what the prices are for the white nights, and also price the WN Cotmans. Then with school starting and Christmas coming, you might find an artist grade paint at a sale price close to that of white night or student grade. Windsor Newton artist grade are very good, and they go on sale often. A set of 12 or 18 is a good starting point. If it’s only a few dollars difference, it would be worth getting artist grade paint for your teen. And maybe find some Bee 100% cotton paper so this girl or boy can experience watercolor paints at “full potential” without breaking the bank. What a great thing to encourage a young artist!
@thefrugalcrafter
@thefrugalcrafter 6 жыл бұрын
hmmm, good question, I think I'd choose a reliable student brand that offers replacement. My instinct would be to go with a Cotman set (either the 12 sketcher box half pan set of if your budget allowed the 24 full pan studio set because you can get a 1" brush in a full pan if they like to do landscapes or work large. They can also easily find tubes of cotamn or W&N Artist colors are any art store or many big box craft stores if they need to replenish the colors and want the same. Are you i the US? If so Amazon has a good price on both. I also like the Sennelier La Petit Aquarelle, Van Gogh and Academy but finding refill tubes at a local big box or art shop might be problematic if they want to keep the same colors. Another choice that is budget friendly, bright, full pan and comes with a nice palette is the student version of White Nights called sonnett, meeden has one in a tin here: amzn.to/2O7Dcwb otherwise you can but the set of sonnett aints for around $20 but they come in a cardboard box. They can order full pans to replace then on Etsy for about $3.50 each if they want or buy a tbe from another brand in the craft store. It is an excellent buy for an older student. I think 4 out of the 24 colors are not fully lightfast but they are really vibrant and disperse well. Also you can look up pigment info. It is a good time to be a student, there are so many quality inexpensive options.

If you keep them in a sketchbook or portfolio until you are ready to frame them it will be fine. Since they are on paper and the paint is a fragile film they really should have a mat and glass for long term safety. If I am selling them I put them in clear cello bags that are archival to keep them clear at art fairs and that works great. Otherwise I store them in a big folder.

Hi Lindsay! I am very new to the watercolour.your videos inspired me a lot! This review makes me want to order one immediately since it costs only around 30usd in amazon. However, I got few watercolour set already, like meiliang, paul rubens, w&n cotman 45, van gogh,shinhan and mission gold tubes. Do you think this product worth to get one even i I own those products i have mentioned?

Use pliers to uncurl the metal at the top of the pan holder a bit and you should be able to loosen it enough to grip the pans. This is an adult job so if you are a kid ask your parents to help:)

I recently purchased the Arteza 42 color compact travel set. I swatched out and the colors are beautiful. However, there are no names for the colors. Do the numbers on the end of each fan out piece indicate pigment colors or is it just their numbering system. Anyplace to find out the color names on this one. Thanks, Lindsay
@thefrugalcrafter

Are you sure that was Arteza? It sounds like the Superior fan set that many sellers are selling on Amazon (I reviewed one I bought on Amazon sold by Meeden) and if that is the one the numbers don't relate to pigments, they are the factories numbering system. Beautiful colors tho!

Hey Lindsay. Great video as always. Curious. Arteza calls it Oxford blue. I think my Winsor and Newton set is Winsor blue. Does that mean my Winsor blue is not real aquamarine blue? I’ve always wondered about this and thought it would be a good time to ask. Still annoyed that Arteza doesn’t ship to Canada though. I’ve yet to get my hands on any of these products. I have tried amazon.ca, but many of their products are not allowed to be shipped across the border. It’s weird. Anyway, thanks for a thorough video. Always very informative.

Winsor blue is phthalo blue. If you have it in a tube, you can look at the packaging to find the pigment code and look up what color name it corresponds to.

I am not sure why Arteza is not selling in Canada yet, It might be the expense of dual language packaging. Catlin is correct on the origin of Winsor Blue. I will mention the request for selling to Canada to Arteza the next time I email them as several people have asked about this:)

@@ChiseledDiamond And you mean it's really regular, hairy mold? I'm asking cause it's so unusual for pan paints to go moldy if you let them dry out properly. Sometimes watercolors turn a little white, like they get this white stuff that covers them, like mildew, and it's just something to to with some of the ingredients kinda separating over time. My Lukas watercolors got this after I did not use them for a couple of months, and I also thought it was mold at first. Maybe it's that?

the brushes are synthetic. The watercolors are a dye and I don't think ox-gal are added to dye based watercolor markers and the body is plastic. I can't think of any animal product in there and I think they's have a bit of an odor if ox-gall were present. That said the only person who could say 100% would be arteza and the factory making them. There is no animal hain in them tho:)

@@brandytaylor1986. Cotman, Van Gogh, Lukas studio, Sonnet, Aquafine and MeiLiang Pretty Excellent are all reasonably affordable and good to use watercolors. With the exception of the MeiLiang they are all available in pan sets, and Cotman, Van gogh and aquafine also come open stock. Lukas studio does not come open stock anymore I believe, but they do sell tube sets which you could use to refill the pans eventually. Sometimes you can still find single pans of Lukas studio, but as far as I know they are old stock that is just being sold of. The MeiLiang paint is also solid, but instead of pans it's all put into the same plastic inlay and that's the only way you can get it. It's really good though and you could refill the set with a different paint. Also, check out Lindsay's playlists, there is one dedicated to watercolor reviews, you'll find plenty of affordable sets there.

That's a bummer. I find the arteza tubes do best when used fresh from the tube. The basic bright colors will give you the best watercolor effects. If you bought them recently you might be able to return them. If not, maybe practice brushstrokes on white butcher paper and make gift wrap with it. Be free with them.
