Hi Patrick - great video to follow as always - I do have a lot of trouble getting decent vocals for my recordings. Have you got any further videos that show the best ways to improve voice recordings using the Compressors and EQ available within the Garageband software?

Great video! How would I record completely raw vocals in GarageBand? Is there a way or setting to record with no effects at all?

Great video! Would you happen to have the presets for the VST's in garage band that you're using on some of the mixed audio in this video? That would be greatly appreciated! Cheers!

Hi Patrick. Great tips as ever. Like you (and at the risk of being criticized), condenser mic every time for recording vocals. The technology has really moved on - even some of the cheaper USB mics work really well. Thanks again.

Hi again Patrick. Some tips on recording vocals would always be good, e.g. recording levels, where to position mics etc. and panning and mix tips. If you have time, I think people would find that useful - me included. Cheers. Andy

Hello mate! Great video! Though I have a question - I cannot help but notice a huge amount of clicks and crackles (using headphones) on all the samples you’ve recorded with the featured mics. And yet, your main vocal using your „regular” mic is crystal clear theroughout the video. Would you, by any chance, know where that difference comes from? Thank you in advance!

Can you make a video about how to do post-processing? I am a beginner and I don’t know what condensing, equalizing, or any of those terms mean! Or how/ when to do it

Good choice of sound card with the Scarlett 2i4; I use it myself. For a good, inexpensive mic, I recommend the AT2020.

How do you deal with the lack of audio buffers now in GB? I get digital "clicks" when I record now, though thankfully not on every track. My singer doesn't like it when I ask her to sing again, but sometimes I just cannot remove them effectively. A thousand dollars on a mic and an interface and a memory upgrade, but still get the occasional click in the middle of the recording.

Can’t say I’ve ever experienced any rogue clicks in my recordings to be honest?

Surprising but true! For my down and dirty projects where the voice is inside a mix it’s perfect. I picked one up at a charity shop for $4 Canadian. I liked it so much I bought another for back up, lol. I use a condenser & a Behringer interface for my voice over work, as the Rock Band mic picks up a lot of interference from electrical devices. Either way, location acoustics (absorption, diffusion and isolation from outside noise) can make or break the sound from any microphone, at any price.

I wasted years using cheap USB interfaces. Make sure you get a good that does not rely on ASIO4ALL and has a native driver for your DAW. You might want to get started with an inexpensive one to test the waters but the sooner you get a good quality interface like his the better. I had problems with pops and noises, oddities, using my MIDI guitar and soon as I got the Focusrite things improved greatly.

Good God man. I'm an opera singer. What am I supposed to do with this? I get it that you're giving lots of good information, but you're being very specific to just talking. What do I do when I sing and blow out the mic?

I’m sorry the information in this video wasn’t tailored specifically to YOUR needs. I’ve taken the liberty of searching KZfaq for a video on how to record opera vocals for you. It took less than a minute to find. Next time I’d recommend you use the time you WOULD have spent leaving a snarky and self righteous comment on my channel to do the same. Here’s the video, enjoy: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jbeJY5SAqJaleXk.html

I’ve used my earbuds to record in a pinch, just as Patrick does w the built in mic on the Mac. I think a usb to lightning adapter would work for a mic.
