I hope everyone had some good holidays. I took a week off but here is the second part to the 2022 Chevy 2500 Duramax review. I go over what exactly is underneath the truck in terms of important mechanical component options that separate this truck from the major truck like Ford and RAM
Probably the biggest difference between the Chevy/GMC 2500 is the front axle. GM for years now has opted to go with an independent front suspension system. meaning the front axle on their heavy duty truck is not a solid front axle like both Ford and Ram have on their heavy duty truck. there are a couple benefits like better ride quality and handling but you also loose some strength. there is nothing wrong with this set up but I like a solid front axle on a heavy duty truck because it will take more abuse. CV axles in the chevy are fine, they will work but with a solid front axle you get U-joints attaching the front axles to the hubs. this in my opinion is a much stronger system.
the second major components is the new Allison 10 speed heavy duty transmission. this 10 speed is completely different then the 10 speed in the 1500 trucks or SUV's. it is not 100% an Allison product but they gave it their stamp of approval. but anything Allison is associated with tends to be very well built so you can be assured you are getting a good transmission.
the Transfer case is a magna clutch pack style transferase with this truck. I personally am not a fan of these styles of transfer cases. they are active transfer cases and basically make their own decision about when to send full power to the front driveshaft. I would of liked to see a traditional chain driven transfer case but it's not the end of the world.
lastly is the rear end. these GM HD 11.5 inch rear ends all come with a g80 locker which is an awesome thing to come from factory. These lockers are true lockers not Limited slip differentials meaning that you are going to get excellent traction. they are also maintenance free and work automaticly. the downside is that they can't be abused. if you plan on doing burnouts on drive pavement you will blow them up.
the second thing about the rear end is the gearing. this chevy 2500 HD truck has to come with 3.42 gears which is a little crazy. I which that GM had at least an option for 3.73 gears but they don't. I feel like this why this truck can only tow 18,500 whereas the RAM's and Fords can both tow over 20,000lbs. So I which GM has at least an option for taller gears.
