Diesel Mechanic reviews the 2024 Chevy 2500 with the new Duramax Diesel second gen L5P Engine and discuss all the mechanical upgrades, benefits, fuel economy and added power this new duramax diesel engine is putting out 470 horsepower and 975 lb-ft of torque. It seems like GM was trying to add efficiency to this engine to increase power and probably more importantly Decrease Emissions. which can be so critical on these modern diesel engines.

I was very excited to get my hands on this new L5P 2024 Duramax diesel engine. Today as I mentioned I was going to discuss all the upgrades GM gave to this engine in order to make that extra power and max towing numbers.
the first upgrade is on the fueling system. this new duramax diesel can now put out a max injection pressure of 32,000 psi which is an increase of about 3,000 psi. more pressure means the diesel fuel will be atomized better meaning the diesel fuel will burn more efficiently, resulting in more power and less emission created.
along with higher fuel pressurs are reinforced high pressure fuel rails and updated injectors with slightly different nozle spray patterns for once again more efficiency and better burning of the diesel fuel.
this new duramax engine is also coming with upgraded pistons. these new pistons are a much more aggressive style of piston with a raised center cone which allows for better fuel air mixture and once again more efficiency. leading to great power numbers and less emission created.
GM has updated the cylinder heads with more cooling to keep the combustion chamber cooler and to dissipate heat much better which will put less stress on the cooling system. a cooler engine can simply run longer with less issues.
gm also updated the head gasket to make it a much stronger unit which I like to see on this powerful Duramax engine.
The exhaust brake on this engine has also been improved which I really think needed to be done. the 6.7L powerstroke and the 6.7L cummins engines have much better exhaust engine brakes and its nice to see GM address this. they added 20% stiffer exhaust valve springs to help allow the VGT turbo to create more back pressure and slow the truck and trailer down more aggressively.
lastly GM put a brand new Turbo on this engine. it is slightly bigger but most importantly is the updated electronic VGT actuator which controls the speed of the turbo. a quicker VGT allows for better throttle response and just a better performing turbo and engine. so I really like this upgrade as well.
the max towing capacities have all been increased as well pushing an extra 3,000lbs of towing capacity so hopefully this 2024 Duramax will have a better performance on my towing loop!
Lastly I think GM has put this Duramax engine in a very nice place in the HD truck segment, I also touch on how Ram 2500's cummins are a little outdated and need to change something to be more competitive in the HD truck market.
Hope you guys like the video!

@@mr.adventure6507 I'm not sure what you are saying. What I am saying is that the Horsepower war is insane and that the buyer really wants emissions controls that are reliable and good for the life of the engine. As for Hydrogen engines - Hydrogen is not a viable tech because of the cost; better to just burn the methane directly because that is where most of the hydrogen will be produced from. BTW CO2 is irrelevant because it is not a pollutant - has nothing to do with Earth's climate.

Nice vid as always. I think the power wars has gotten out of control. I have a 19 HO Cummins with the Aisin and air ride. The more weight you put on this thing the better it performs. Absolutley no mods needed to be a tow monster. And for anyone that hasn't drove one of of theses the engine brakes are far superior to the other two by a mile. I tow equipment in the city and we have a ton of steep terrain. Couldn't live without it. As a work truck it definitely doesn't need any more power. How much diesel does a guy need to burn. Ford can put 2000 HP in a truck and I still wouldn't buy one. Just rode in my buddies 24 $140,000 Limited Power Stroke and was thoroughly disappointing in the interior. I'm sure it has lots of power going forward but it just felt cheap inside compared to my apparently outdated Longhorn Ram. Nothing wrong with steady Eddie!

Ordered a new 2023 F350 with the 7.3 gasser last year. After test driving a 2024 Chevy Duramax I traded the Ford in and haven’t looked back. The Chevy is such a nicer driving truck. The Ford (both gas and diesel) is stiff, sluggish, and feels heavy on the front end compared to the Chevy which is very nimble and light feeling and feels like a race horse. Plus it pulls better for me in terms of stability. The Gale Banks video is what finally helped make the decision last fall.

Unfortunately Cummins rock solid reliability isn’t what it used to be. The 2019 to present Cummins they went with hydraulic lifters and enough people are complaining about needing lifters and in some cases cams that makes it a concern. My 2019 started making a terrible ticking sound at 37k which was confirmed to be lifters. Not a perfect indicator of how widespread an issue it is, but there’s definitely a few people on various forums who had the same issue. Well if you really want to talk facts, if anything changes in the emissions system or a code is thrown in that system you're screwed and if you're truck shuts off you will not be able to start it. Secondly instead of having a nice husky keyway on the crank shaft they have a single high steel button that can be stripped under heavy torque. Then you have to get your engine torn down to cut a real keyway cut in the end of the crank shaft. GM should have figured it out before they charge you 90 k for a flipping truck.

The problem is that everything on that Duramax and the ones before it are driving the whole engine with a little dowel pin on the crankshaft gear that’ll shear off and kaboom the engine.
@geoffmooregm
@geoffmooregm 4 ай бұрын
That shouldn't happen. The pins are only for alignment. The huge torque on the balancer bolt is supposed to keep everything from moving. Clearly, it should be addressed, though, because something is causing quite a few of them to shear the pins. I am not sure if it only happens after service where the balancer has to be removed or if bone stock engines are having issues, too.
@michaelbenoit248
@michaelbenoit248 4 ай бұрын
@@geoffmooregm , the problem isn’t the balancer it’s the gear itself. I doubt the balancer actually touches the camshaft gear at all. Every other manufacturer has a keyway where Dmax uses 2 dowel pins. Kinda pointless design. Easy fix is to remove the balancer, timing cover, & weld a few spots to the crankshaft. Dmax’s are kinda a throwaway when the pins break so just weld the gear on it and fix the problem.

Maybe it's just me, but RAM doesn't seem to really be even trying to keep up. Even their half-tons seem more focused on interior vs capability. Great video, looking forward to the next one.

Ya Ram milked the Covid shortages and lazily kept manufacturing the same platform while raising prices. This year their inventory is starting to stack up- we already have the new 2025 1500 but the leaks/rumors are the HD will have a ZF 8 speed and all HD’s will get the same Cummins (no more SO vs HO). If these rumors are true (especially if the cab is also updated) Ram will be competitive again.

Um what? They just came out with 540hp hurricane which is by far the most powerful also the hybrid is gonna tow 14000 pounds have 2500 pound payload and 650hp. Oh range will be class leading also. You sure about what you said?

@@angrybeavers1175 Yup, I am. The hurricane didn't get a big towing bump. In fact, last I checked, the HO actually has less capacity than the regular hurricane. The RamCharger looks impressive, but outside of that, they really haven't been keeping up. I hope the RamCharger is as good as it looks, and as mentioned above, they up their game on the HD front. Competition is a good thing!

Especially since Cummins is now going to make a gas conversion head and timing for the engine and it makes 330 hp and 660 ft pounds of torque yes ram isn’t so far not going to use this engine in there trucks yet but when a gas version can almost do the same as the diesel counter part in hp and torque that is bad

100% agree that the gmc’s are currently the best looking. I’m a ford guy for the most part, and own a ‘17 super duty, but every time I see an AT4 I’m impressed. Not a big fan of the looks of the new super duty. GMC for the beauty pageant win. Chevy …well, I guess everyone has to have the ugly cousin.

I don't agree with everything here; I think Ram does it better with important and significant differences between 2500 and 3500. There is no need for massive engines in a 2500. With Ram, their products have stronger separation between 1500 - 3500, GM and Ford basically don't have a 3/4 ton anymore, not really. I'd actually even prefer Ram to focus on more MPG and slightly less power in their 2500s.

I’m not a fan of the new transmission at all. I like the Allison 6000 transmission that the 2017 to 2019. You can’t even check your transmission fluid on the new trucks. And because of that you can’t even change your transmission fluid with out getting something like a $1,500.00 tool set to check the fluid level. Not happy about it. GM is trying to keep you from doing your own maintenance and service on your vehicle. General Motors is trying to get to the point that you have to take your vehicle to a dealership to get your oil changed, your transmission serviced, your differentials serviced, and pretty much anything else. Literally it is just a money game that General Motors is setting up their equipment that you can’t do anything yourself on it. You have to take it to a dealership.
