I’m loving the new Altra Olympus 4.0 and feel it’s a solid update to an already great workhorse of a shoe - what are your thoughts on Altras new Max-cushion trail runner? Is it too expensive??
@gosekinz
@gosekinz 4 жыл бұрын
if you're in the market for a max cushioned shoe you are already looking in that upper price bracket - perhaps $170 isn't too much? After all you are going to get a LOT of (isn't the phrase "A TON OF MILES") wear out of the shoe - much more so than a high priced road shoe especially the carbon plated "wonder shoes" that are so much the fashion ... so yeah - Hey mate hope you have the Inov8 G 270 in your rotation - highly recommend it!

Already got mine. The best Olympus ever!!! What amazed my the most is that once you put it on and start to run, it feels so much lighter than it actually is, really a great trail shoe. Bravo Altra!!! Hit all the marks with this one!

I’ve had it in the PCT for about 400 miles now and it’s definitely decreased my overall foot pain significantly. The fit is surprisingly similar to the Timp 1.5 - wider and higher volume than the Olympus 3.5. I wish the forefoot rubber went back another inch or so, but overall it’s the best hiking shoe I’ve ever worn.

Yeah bro, I've been waiting for this review. I went with the Olympus 3.5 and like you said, great shoe but loose in the heel. I bought the 4.0 three weeks ago and I love it even more. It's definitely lighter. I like the new tongue design. Super grippy on technical terrain and like running on a cloud on the flat gravel trails. The heel is way more snug but still looser than the Timp. I'm over it. One major design update though is the front of the outsole. They split it into five independent sections to improve stability and reduce the risk of ankle rolls. So if you step on a root or rock, only the part of the shoe on the object is pushed upward as opposed to the whole thing. Compare the bottoms of the 3.5 and 4.0 and you'll see what I mean. And hey, one feature that is kinda cool, take a picture of it with your flash on. Very reflective. Good review. I agree with you. Hope your lives are peaceful and balanced out there bro. Namaste.

Hoka Stinson: no vibram megagrip - $160. Altra Olympus: has vibram megagrip - $170 = everybody loses their minds
@TheVikingquest
@TheVikingquest 4 жыл бұрын
Stinson? The evo mafate 2 is hokas 100 miler vibram grip trail shoe. I have it. U cant compare any altra shoe to that mate... altra shoes r shit on technical terrain - they r too loose in forefoot which makes u glide and feel insecure on steep downhill. They can for same reason cause blisters on toes unless u over strengthing laces which is also uncomfortable. The altra shoe i had was too soft, and it lost any dampening after 50 miles - tried to return them! 0mm drop cause enormous stress on calves - 3 to 4 mm is min. For shoes that r comfortable. Dont buy the barefoot hype. These r too loose, to swampy, dont last, cant use in technical terrain. Buy hoka or salomon or maybe innov 8? Stop hyping shoes which in reality dont work in terrain, give u blisters, destroys u calves.

TheVikingquest I was just making what I thought was a humorous observation on price point. Not saying one shoe is better than another. Everyone’s feet are different, sounds like you tried a pair of Altra’s and they didn’t work out for you, they may work for others. That said, your point on the Mafate makes my observation stand. Mafate = max cushion trail with Vibram megagrip $170. If people want a max cushion shoe and for the brand to slap that name brand outsole on it the price usually will be around that mark :)

@@machonacho2197 hey, didnt mean too sound so harsch! I guess i was so annoyed still by throwing a pair of almost new 140 dollar trail shoes in the trash after 50 miles... my, and many others opinion that i both read and saw on altra is that the ego midsole isnt durable, their own none vibram rubber is dangerously slippry in on wet rocks and roots (i took one hard fall on them) and loose their dampeninh really quick. I read of some ultra runners who runs 100 miles in them and then have to toss them as they r hard as nails! As u said some might find these to fit, but u have to have extremely wide feet for them and still they dobt work well downhill running... So again, dont waste u money on a low quality, albeit interistung shoe - its still faulty for 95% of runners. When something sucks u should speak out. The store i bought them in was gonna send them to usa! even though Every video and/or review on these, not sponsored, speaks of how badly the ego midsole lasts. They should be pulled from market unless revised. Yes, it also makes me annoyed that so many opions on youtube in the end r just sponsor plugs, or done with some strange commitment - like keep the shoes, but give us an 90% honest review that seems ernest - like this one. Dont buy. Easy. No video needed - no payment transmitted.

@Jeff Johanson yeah. I have half a size up too to get some more room. With that said, for racing, who really wants altra toebox? They felt insecure, slippery and unconnected. I got blisters in front if toes. I still cant recommend anyone byuing altras. I have a new salomon pro 4, just bought on sale. Its even more cramped spacewise, but still they r brutally trustworthy in forest, more stabile then mafate. But i run a half marathon (2.30 to 3 hours technical elevation) every other week in mafate - my feet never hurt, my knees feel fine every time. I do understand why this is the most used 100 mile shoe...
@junglisttt
@junglisttt 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheVikingquest feet are different though. I ran a 75 k in my first altras (timp 1.5) had a great result with zero pain and no blisters. Altras feel like they are made for my feet and when i try my old hokas nikes and solomons now they are way to narrow and that explains why i had so much pain when racing in those. Even the clifton 6 wide is a little bit to snug. I think in the long run altras are truly the best, for me. But with the superior for example, i know what you mean with the downhill aspect.

Hefty price + “don’t expect the sole to last too long”... is my biggest problem with almost all the new shoes. If I can’t get 1,000km (600m) out of a shoe I’m already pissed off. The prices keep going up, but they don’t last longer 😡

I've been running in the 4.0's for a few weeks as part of Runner's World shoe test program and your feedback definitely tracks well with what I shared with them a few weeks ago. I really like Altra, but I was really skeptical when I got them (red and white colorway) because I've never run in something with this much stack height. I was never so happy to be wrong. They are surprisingly nimble, really comfortable and very durable. My only point of concern has been how the midsole material is going to hold up on the sole of the shoe over the long term, but so far I have zero complaints (it it definitely pricey though).

I love my Altra Olympus 4.0 shoes. Great traction, good fit, getting it broken in well. Currently have 100 miles in on this shoe and just had outter mesh tear when hit side of rock or stick on weekend trail run. Definite bummer. Altra says, not going to cover under their warranty. Super bummer! Next move is to try & patch it/sew it, glue it up. I would still buy again but am hoping/expecting to get 500 miles out of this pair. So apparently the upper mesh will not "hold up to anything you can throw at it."

Yeah this happened to me after wearing for 18 miles. I was mountain scrambling and my foot slipped down between two rocks. Luckily it diddent tear but a severe scuff (prob 1/3 of the way through the fabric). However I had gone on a 10 mile moderate trail run the day before with no issues. I think if the terrain is such that you will need scrapping the sides often, they won't last long. However if its technical terrain that mainly hits just the soles you are good to go. Something like the Speedgoat would be great in that mountainous environment because the upper is tough and reinforced but then your toes are going to get squished. I think Altra are afraid of too much rigidity which goes against the while ethos of a comfortable foot

So, I'm a dinosaur, in age and Olympus usage. Had one pair of 2.0 which were pretty nice and comfy on a100k UNTIL they reached the first water crossing which turned that toebox into a rice paddy for 100s of meters whereas, on the same course on a 50k the year before, the Peregrines drained properly within a dozen steps. I really like the Olympus overall as an ultra shoe but I'm still traumatized by that blister dorado they caused me. Somebody convince me to even come closer than 10ft from Olympus again; do they drain nowadays or should I head over to those Sketchers trailmaxdingdongs with their EXTRA drainage?

Excellent video as always. I think the only thing that justifies the price increase is the Vibram outsole despite that fact they are still less than what Newtons were in 2007 which were $175 back then. I think Altra has a weird needs to try to make certain shoes lighter like this one that don’t need to be lighter. And they unfortunately do it by thinning the tongues. Very annoying. Need I say the “Duo”? To hear it has less cushioning is disappointing yet to me mean they are trying to focus this shoe on true trail running and not as a hybrid road/trail shoe. I’ll totally agree they look way better. Thanks GR for your video reviews. Hopefully you’ll get to review some of the new Topo’s and possible more road shoes.

I wore this for the first time on the last 7.5 miles of a 50 miler last month. I wore it after running in the evo speedgoats, the midsole here while enough stack height it just seems hard and not cushioned enough for how big as heavy it is and being positioned as their max cushion offering

I use the Altra's for hiking...and that is what is making me nervous about the recent changes. On the Olympus 4 they kept their old midsole foam which to me seemed to flatten out and stop recovering as fast shortly after 100 miles. That made it had to use the Timp 1.5 daily. The Timp 2 looks great with the new midsole material, but they changed the upper to something much more narrow. Now the Olympus 4 looks like Timp 1.5 on an Olympus midsole and outsole, but can I trust the midsole for daily use for oh say 500 miles on the AT? And do I want to pay these prices to learn if they hold up to the daily load of hiking? Just not sure I want to take Altras on the trail next year.

Recently ordered 4.0 and after a few runs I can only state that the shoe does not fit my foot as 3.0 did. Difficulties with heel grip and thinner tongue means that the lacing limits the blood supply if I tighten so that the shoe is tight and the foot slides both sideways and forward in technical terrain. Has the same size 9 as on the old 3.0 but the shoe unfortunately feels like a completely new model. My tip! do not buy before you have tested in store. Ordering the shoe based on previous experience with size and feel is not recommended.

I held out buying the 4.0 for a long time. My last 2 pairs of 3.5 got over 800 miles each. The 4.0 with just over 200 miles is falling apart. Like all Olympus shoes the outsole is peeling away from the upper and an eyelet is ripping out. If this pair makes it to 300 miles I will be shocked. Would love to see you review the new 5.0 but at $180 I am hesitant with the poor experience I have had with the 4.0.

Like the shoe despite of the price although I find it on a sale. Have some worries on the middelpart of the sole which get damaged way earlier zo reduces the lifetime. One thing that keeps bothering on Altra 's in general is the length of the laces. Depending the size the laces are always to short or way to long. Would be nice if they could do something about that.

I wear orthotic insoles that fit great in the Timp but not so great in the 2.0 so that is a factor for me in wanting something closer to the Timp. Can no longer find the Timp in my size, so looking at these but don't want to be wrong like with the Timp 2.0....

Whenever I get past about 10-15 miles a week in them I feel pain. Whats this like on pavement? I do a lot of trail to concrete and then back type runs. Does this have that firm feel that the Paradigms have, or more squishy?

The last two iterations have over 600 miles each and have had no build quality issues (3.0 flattened a little). For me this a buy, my hobbit's feet love the miles in these.

As I was very happy with my purchase of the 3.0 and 3.5 versions I am genuinely curious ... if the 3.5s are available for $100 and the 4.0 are $170 ... are the 4.0s 70% better - after all I can (almost) get two pairs of 3.5s for the same money?

The Timp hurts the top of my foot, the Loan peak hurts the bottom of my feet beyond about 15 miles. Is it worth me trying the Olympus for 50 milers?

What about the tongue? No biting into your leg just above the socks? I got blisters in Hoka SG4s because of the new tongue.

Terrific review, Ginger Runner, as always. SIZING QUESTION: I normally wear size 13 for road and trail, but had to size down to 12.5 in the Paradigm 4.5 (only Altra I have ever owned). Are the paradigm and Olympus 4 similarly sized?

So what's the verdict on that rudder/flipper? I never did like it on the Lone Peaks and Timps. I don't know why they put it on this Olympus version.

Looks like it has the same tongue as the new Torin 4.5, which is a total dealbreaker for me. In a max cushion shoe, I prefer a cushioned upper as well. Otherwise, I was seriously considering this as my next trail shoe. And....$170, ugh is right.

Great video. Walking the Camino de Frances September 15th 2020. 500 plus miles. Will this shoe last? cushioning...and mesh exterior have been cited as possible issues. Thanks.

Less cushion and thinner tongue. Feels more like the old Timps. Never had blisters with any former version of Olympus -- until I got this one. Tried two pairs of the 4.0, and my opinion is that Altra really screwed up a formerly great trail shoe. Sad.

Can anyone speak to transitioning to these from a higher drop? I'm currently exclusively using sense ride 2's (8mm) but want to start running in altras, specifically the Olympus 4.0. I've tried looking online but most of the advice is tailored toward road-running, not trails. I have no major pain issues or anything like that, and am aware I'd need to slowly transition like Ethan said.

How are these for going over rocks? Ran over a pointy rock and hurt a lot in my salomon speed cross 5's so i'm looking for something that can handle rocks better. Looking forward to the altra lonepeak 5 which has a rock plate when it gets released or was thinking of going with these but I don't think they have a rock plate?
