I bought the Olympus 4s the moment they came in stock for hiking absolutely loved them... For work (Landscaping/commercial maintenance) I wore Targhee 3s in late spring I started having knee pain when my days were spent working in shopping centers walking on asphalt all day so I started wearing the Olympus 4s on days I knew I would be work on asphalt and they solved the pain and held up better than expected with heavy asphalt use... now I have a different pair for work/hiking and just daily wear they are amazing shoes really hope Altra sticks with this design only change I would make is the sole like you said needs to be full vibram.. thanks for the videos

Thank you for this review which randomly came up in my feed. I'm wearing the Lone Peak 4, which has been very comfortable after breaking my 5th metatarsal. I've yearned for more padding and based on your review, I'm going to buy the Olympus 5. Keep those reviews coming. 👍👍 I also subscribed!

Thanks Rhonda! I hope the Altra 5's treat you well! I bought 3 pairs of the 4's when they were on sale before they ran out of them. Also, consider the Topo Athletic Ultraventure 3's, they are my new favorite shoe for 2023, very similar fit and feel of the olympus shoes but even better fit in my opinion. Hike on!

Thru hiked the AT with Lone Peaks, Merrills, Hoka's and several others. My feet were incredibly sore for much of the trip. I've since discovered the Olympus and have much less foot pain. I do think they lose a bit in efficiency because of the cushioning, but if you are going long, then I think it's a great choice. I agree on the quality as well , every one of my Lone Peak's have had a peeling toe cap within a few days of wearing them, but on 2 pairs of Olympus, the cap hasn't budged. One last thing, I found the sizes inconsistent between the Olympus and Lone Peak. With the Olympus I've sized down 1/2 shoe size for an equivalent fit, so it might make sense to buy your first pair in a store vs online. I will be wearing the Olympus on my PCT SOBO attempt this year.

On my fourth pair of Olympus 4's I had some heel slippage that I had never previously experienced so I sent them back and got the Lone Peak 6's and the heel lock was amazing! These maximum shoes might be leading to more problems long term. The body was designed to do the work that these shoes are doing so it may be weakening the body’s purpose. I was an avid Altra wearer and had knee, back and ankle issues. I have since transition to minimalist runners and all those problems have disappeared. Proceed with caution though, because the transition needs to be taken slowly.
@jasonwish-
@jasonwish- 3 жыл бұрын
I agree completely with what you’re saying and that is exactly why I do not wear any high arch inserts because the planter fascia was designed to absorb the work of the foot. This is also why I like the zero drop. I feel like the lone peaks are very minimalist With how thin the stack height is but sharp rocks would hurt my feet from time to time and they seem to be a little bone jarring trying to jog in them. So I guess what I’m saying is having a zero drop is a more natural approach like being barefooted But having some extra cushion under there protect your feet and allows me to do higher miles Without as much foot soreness at the end of the day.

Nice review. I knew I recognized your face. I have seen you and your awesome produce at the farmer's market in Worthington!! I am ditching my usual Merrill hiking show since it is just too narrow for my forefoot. Now trying to decide what Altra to buy for hiking (no running at all) and could not decide but was leaning toward the Olympus. I tried he 4s and the 5s on and honestly don't care too much for the heel tab on the 5s amd the body of the 5s feel more snug than the 4s. Almost like I need to go up a half size. Seems I can probably wear a true size in the 4s. Have you now tried the Olympus 5 and if so, do you have any feedback?

I went through three pairs of Olympus fours and set several speed records with them on trails (FKT’s), But I have since switched to the Topo Athletic Ultraventure 2’s. I also tried to the Olympus fives And probably needed to size up a half size as well. I ended up sending them back because I just don’t feel like they lock in around my feet as good as the topo’s. I will probably get another pair of fours just to have on hand. The problem with Topo is that there’s no one that really carries them in Ohio so you have to order online. They have a fairly wide toebox but still not as wide as Altra. Worthington is an awesome market, our best one out of 7 we attend. Thanks!

Thanks for pointing out the foam part of the outsole, I hadn't noticed that on the pair I have here (I'm still deciding if I want to return them or not)... that's pretty stupid of them. It looks like exactly the same foam as the midsole. Looking where they have positioned it, if you are running with good form and landing on the midfoot, that would get hammered and very quickly not offer up much grip on foot placement.
@jasonwish-
@jasonwish- 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah that foam wears down way to fast but I still can’t find a shoe that allows me to put down multiple 30+ mile days without getting sore feet and toes. My fourth pair slipped on my heal a bit so I sent them back and got lone peak 6’s and they are so comfortable and roomy for my toes but I get sore feet muscles at about 15 miles each day I hike with them. I still plan on trying Olympus’s again. The Topo shoes just don’t have a roomy enough toe box for me and neither do Hokas.

@@jasonwish- thanks for the additional info. More to think about. My worry with the Topo MNTN Racer 2's is the material in front of the forwardmost lace holes is quite stiff and feels like it's putting pressure on the top of my foot behind my big toes. Also love these, but quality seems to be a dealbreaker. Both me and some acquaitnances are seeing these failing as early as 70-150 miles. Specifically the lining strips inside the toe box comes loose, and the upper mesh develop holes and tears very quickly. What is strange is that one shoe may fail early, while the other is holding up. Of course we are getting our money back and some of the guys including myself are trying a second pair right now but this is not promising. One guy has had issues with most of his Altra shoes, the worst being Timp 3 failing before 2 miles. Thinking of trying Speedgoat 4 Wide next for the long hauls. We mostly run the mountains and stress on the shoes may be high, but most other shoes hold up well. So there is big difference, not in favor of Altra.

Wow I can’t believe how quickly those shoes have been falling apart for you. I am currently on my second pair of Olympus and have around 300 miles on them and they still look almost brand new but I’m not running through the mountains. I tried the speed goats on and it felt like they were crushing my toes. Still interested in trying out topo’s too. I still wear my original Olympus around the farm but they are completely shredded so I do realize they have quality issues, after 500 miles they were completely done. Also have some interest in the Invo brand. I just about bought a pair of the G270s but I think the stack height is too thin for me.

On my second pair of Olympys 4`s, currently at 93 miles and still holding up well. At least better than the first pair and i reckon the next 60-90 miles will reveal if the upper has the usual weakness. Also got a pair of Speedgoat 4 wide, and was impressed by their cushioning. Running crazy fast downhill in those. But they are not particularly wide; I would say normal. And the toe box is not on the generous side; extremely low and big toes are pushed firmly inwards. Currently easing into long runs to see if they will work, but I am not too optimistic. Suspect they will cause blisters for me past 10-12 miles.

Nice review! I've had the Lone Peaks, then the Timp 1.5. I loved those Timp 1.5 by far more than any other shoe I've ever worn. I bought a second pair since I loved them so much and that's what I wear only for longer hikes. Then I bought the Timp 2.0 to wear every day and for walks and day hikes. Well they changed so much from the 1.5's and hurt my feet if I wear them too long. Smaller and less room on the top. These Olympus 4.0's just look like the shape and size as the Timp 1.5. What do you think?
@jasonwish-
@jasonwish- 3 жыл бұрын
Looks like you went through about the same progression as I did on the Altra shoes. I loved both pair of my Timp 1.5's but both ended up ripping where the foot/toe crease is in the material up front only after 400 miles each time. I was really looking forward to the 2.0's but I could not stand the way they felt around my mid foot, like so many others have mentioned in other reviews. I also started to notice that my toes would hit the rubber area on the Timps after long days and feel irritated. The Olympus is so much better for me in all areas....I'm not kidding, they are amazing!! Never one blister or hot spot in 400 miles and only sore feet after my FKT when I hiked 84 miles straight. I really want to try the Topo Ultraventure Pro just to see if they are better for trail/road running, but I can't imagine anything being better than the Olympus for overall comfort on and off the trail. Very durable too! Can't wait to see the next version once these wear out. I bet I'll get 700-800 miles on this pair easily if I had to guess.

Seeing as the anecdotal evidence is showing wear at specific places in the mesh, how about a preemptive repair on the inside with some appropriate tape to help support the mesh. For $170 bucks, why not? Someone should give it a try and report back. Ok, I'll do it. Should I get a half size bigger? 10.5 usually works for me. I've never bought a pair sight unseen before, what a leap of faith.

I've always been an 11 and that's what worked for me...not sure if you want to size up or not unless you like some extra room or have wide feet already. Preemptive taping sounds like a great idea but not sure where and how one would apply it to the shoe. After 500 miles they just fell apart in too many places. My new ones have 150 miles on them as of this comment and look and feel like new still.

Would you recommend the same type of sock pairing in the Olympus, or is that too much sock in a shoe vs. boot for long days on trail?
