To my ear and musical sensibilities Zimerman sets the gold standard for playing Chopin. His understanding of all the subtle details, where the leading tones are, and how to respect the dynamics and tonal overtones are simply amazing. He never loses the context of what came before, and what comes after any passage he plays. He lets the notes breathe, and nothing is ever rushed. I expect that Chopin himself would have been amazed

There is perhaps not another pianist of the 20th/21st Centuries with a finer sense of tonality, phrasing, colour, and beauty than Krystian Zimerman. His interpretations of the music of Chopin and the other early Romantics are SECOND TO NONE! Not only that, but his Brahms, Chopin, Liszt, and Beethoven Concerti performances are out of this WORLD! There is nobody else with a stronger sense of tonal beauty, tonal colour, and pristine clarity like that of Mr. Zimerman. While most prefer Rubinstein as the top Chopin interpreter, I strongly disagree with this belief. Although true that Rubinstein was indeed one of the Greats of the 20th Century, Zimerman's performances of the early Romantic compositions are surpassed by nobody else.
@MusikPiratCH

For me Rubinstein and Zimerman are equal at Chopin! While Zimerman has surely a technical advantage over Rubinstein, Rubinstein on the other hand has a rhythmical advantage over Zimerman. That makes them for my taste pretty equal! Rubinstein and Zimerman have more in common: same golden tone and they both serve the composer! I put them both at No. 1! :D

For young pianists, this is an object lesson in how to play the piano. His beautifully relaxed technique is reminiscent of the great pianists of the past - Arrau, Rubenstein, Michelangeli, Richter - not a movement is wasted, not a single passage forced. Compare this to the highly tense and laboured playing of a pianist like Kissin. Equally effective results, but whereas Zimmerman hardly raises a sweat in the most difficult passages (e.g. codas of Ballades 1 & 4), Kissin's playing is full of tension and effort. Zimmerman's effortless technique, while certainly the result of had work, frees him from all technical concerns, allowing him to focus on tone, phrasing and structure and to imbue his playing with the most wonderful musical poetry.

Zimmerman must have switched gears from his early days of playing the Ballade Op.23 to this video performance. An earlier recording has Zimmerman playing this piece slower and without much zeal, but this performance is just SUPERB!! Even better than Horowitz whose performance of this piece was my intro to the Ballades of Chopin.

Zimmerman: so poised, so graceful, .... so heavenly in his tone and touch....and not that it really matters .....so handsome in his physical form: a modern version of Liszt in his youth.
@mateuszloniewski
@mateuszloniewski 4 жыл бұрын
More like Liszt in His later stages, Liszt in His youth was more about showing off than anything else. He’d even add unnecessary things to the music that would make the music less beautiful and the performance more focused on the performer. Zimerman is the complete opposite, while He posses immense skill, He uses it to express the piece and even though it’s His own interpretation He doesn’t try to make the piece centered around Him, reminds me of Chopin much more than Liszt or any other composer.

I couldn't agree with you more on this. I have been really liking a few rather young pianists but they are really showy (I don't suggest that they have nothing to show off) and their body languages were excessive and distracting. Their techniques are often amazing and unreal but there is that ego you mentioned... It really affects how their music talent is perceived.

Zimerman has such a refined touch that is able to express the playful moods and gentle melodies of Chopin's Scherzo No. 2 in a way they can be really enjoyed an appreciated. Some interpretations of this piece are at a tempo that is so high, much of the enjoyment is lost. It's comparable to savoring a sip of fine wine vs. gulping it in one shot. It all goes to the same place, though very unique experiences.
