If you truly want a beautiful, safe, and long lived plant the Holiday Cactus is just for you! These plants are great potted plant pals and for good reason. They grace our homes with gorgeous colorful flowers just as the weather is starting to take its usual turn towards colder weather and grayer skies. They are non toxic (if not over ingested) and can live well over a hundred years. If you are gifted one, or inherited one, or just bought one for yourself make sure you watch the entire video to learn how to keep yours thriving and get it to flower year round! Plant Prudently!

I have a moisture meter that I have started using again. I have a Thanksgiving cacti that gave me a few blooms this year, but nothing great. I checked the soil with my finger and was going to give it water. I just happened to check soil with moisture meter and it was pretty damp around roots. I repotted it in a terra cotta pot and plant actually had some root rot. Apparently my soil was too heavy. So now aerating my soil mixture and the clay pot will help too. Plant already looks better.

Wonderful video! I learned quite a bit. My Thanksgiving cactus likes cooler temperatures and good humidity when it is in bloom or it would start dropping buds.

I’m so glad you’ve said there are many varieties of blossoming cactus. Mine were blooming October/November and not well at all. They are now about 7/8 years old and on a plant deck behind my sink with two windows in my new home. They bloomed between Canadian and American thanksgiving and were spectacular! Both of them were orange blossoms but they are in such small pots. When do you re pot?

I myself have an Easter and thanksgiving cactus. There are 2 cactus videos I never seen to know enough about and those are holiday cacti and jade plants. By far you seem to know more about the thanksgiving cactus than anyone else on KZfaq. ( No disrespect to anyone). If I didn't watch dozens of videos I wouldn't know anything about them. 1 thing I need to know is, should y🎉ou water any type of holiday cacti when you can see buds starting to form. Thanks so much for your video..!!!!

Great video! My Thanksgiving cactus is so root bound, blooming like crazy right now in late January. Itching for spring to repot. I love all your content. Thanks for all your hard work!

Definitely true about the holiday cactus wanting to be underpotted. I have two myself (white and red, both thanksgiving cactus I think), and some more fun things to mention about these is that they can regrow from just one or two of the leaves. I have a small one now that has, over the course of a year, grown from a single leaf, to now 10 of them. They also hybridize and breed easily. The plant parts are easily recognisable. Just put some pollen from one plant on the pistil of another and they grow some fruit. This fruit can stay on the cactus for over a year, and will slowly turn pink when mature (this is harder to see with the red/pink varieties, but very easy to spot on the white ones). Though technically edible (the fruit is not toxic), it doesn't really taste like anything either (I've tried). The seeds also seem to grow quite easily if you want to hybridize them yourself. Too bad I can't find any other color than the white, pink and red ones near me. Although beautiful, I'd like to see the more rare colors in person as well.

The most thorough coverage! Never knew about anthers or areal roots (which was a mystery in my first years with these. I now have 6 thriving pots of them and find them to be so easy care. After first 2 years, mine flower like clockwork before Thanksgiving through early spring.. Totally on point with common mistake I also made at start about limiting their watering as you would a typical desert cactus.. Indirect lighting and dry out before each watering like most houseplants works.

Wow, you have more than me! I love them though. I hope to pass them all on someday when they're huge! It's so cool getting them to flower like clockwork every year. Not long after Halloween the Thanksgiving one flowers. About a month later the Christmas one joins in. I think my Easter one is my favorite though. 🌺

The Easter cactus is my favorite out of the three. I just think the "leaves" and flowers look better. Merry Christmas to you too! I'm getting a little snow here tonight on Christmas eve. Here's to a white Christmas which I've never officially had!

My dear friend gave me about thirty cuttings of her great-grandma's Christmas cactus at the beginning of December. The mother plant is over 65 years old and about five feet in diameter. I am water-propagating them, and they are sending out dainty little white roots. I hope to transplant them in a couple of weeks. I also rescued a clearance Christmas cactus from Walmart a couple of weeks ago. It's currently in fungus gnat quarantine, as I, too, have a huge issue with them. It was to the point I had to triage over 50 house plants in the sunroom until I got rid of the nasty buggers. I think I got em, as I haven't seen any in a couple of months.

Did you have success transplanting your plant after water-propagating? I'm hoping to do the same but I'm scared it will die.
@mrknittle532

@@gigitoma444 I did!! They have filled out two separate two gallon pots. They even bloomed last year. They propagated in water very easily and transplanted easily, too. I kept the soil moist for a couple of weeks, then went to watering occasionally.

I was able to get mine to bloom by keeping them in my guest room, which doesn’t have electric lights on in the evening, since no one is in there

Yeah, that's what I do. I keep all of mine in the spare bedroom that the bird sleeps in. Usually, the window is closed with a blackout curtain. I'll open it for a couple of hours when I get the bird out for breakfast.

What do you use to sanitise your gardening tools?
@TheGreenAlchemist
@TheGreenAlchemist 3 жыл бұрын
Depends. Usually, I'll use 1 part bleach to 8 parts water. I also use Isopropyl alcohol or hot soap and water on my newer ones. With older ones like my root rake, I'll remove any debris with a wire brush or wire wool. Then I'll dry them and sharpen them last.

I got my Thanksgiving Cactus about 1yr ago and it still has not bloomed for me. I've been doing what you are supposed to do to get it to bloom with no luck at all.

So with mine what I do is during the growing season I'll have mine either under the LEDs or in an east-facing window. They need very bright shade during this time. Depending on how hot it gets I'll water about 2 cups every 5 -11 days and give em average humidity. After early September I'll move my thanksgiving ones to my spare bedroom where my bird sleeps. I have a blackout curtain over the window to help my birds sleep. Every morning when I get my bird out for breakfast I'll pull back the curtain for about 4 or 5 hours. After September or early October, I'll move the Christmas one in there too. I'll cover most of the air vent up, though not completely so it's a little bit cooler, though not by much than the rest of the house. I'll only water them about the same amount every two or so weeks. If you shorten the amount of daylight you give them and lower the temperature just a bit you can usually get them to flower. Provided you take decent care of them the rest of the year too.
