Easter cactus needs a dry period starting in November ending Valentine’s Day. cool down doesn’t matter like with Thanksgiving and Christmas cactuses. Dry to the point of the paddles shriveling a bit. It’s the only way it will set bloom. it is most certainly old enough. if you don’t give it a dry period. It will simply not bud. The proof that you kept it too moist is that new paddles are forming instead of flower buds. I’ve had them for 16 years. All jungle cacti like this, Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter prefer to be in terra-cotta pots. Trust me, they grow twice as fast with more oxygen at the root. They are epiphytes in nature and grow on tree branches like orchids. Same exact wet dry cycle.

Thank you so much for sharing this! Now I know what I did wrong. The paddles on this one started shriveling and I watered it...and that threw it off. With orchids, when leaves start to shrivel, it's usually not good, so that's what got me into "water mode". lol. So from Nov 1 through Valentine's Day, no water. I hear what you're saying about the clay pots, and if I could, I'd grow them that way. Here in East TN, clay pots grow black mold, so that isn't an option, but I'll pass that along for people who can. Again, I appreciate you taking the time to share this comment. I'd much rather have advise from someone who's grown them for 16 years than from an article. Experience trumps articles in my book. Happy growing! Amy

@@OrchidWhisperer Not zero water all of those months. Just get a shrivel between minor watering. Basically you’re trying to stress it out a bit so that it throws flowers for reproduction. 😊 vegetative reproduction occurs in the rainy season when the stems are heavy and snap, fall to lower branches and root on them.

@@OrchidWhisperer also, what you said about experience really does count. My maxIllaria tenufolia (coconut orchid) never grew much or bloomed until I put it in sphagnum Moss and kept it completely wet by watering daily. exactly the opposite of most orchid needs. Now, incredible growth and flowers every year. watering daily with moss?? Who knew! 😳 phrags are the same. Wet, wet, wet. Even keeping them in a saucer of water. It’s crazy!

I rescued some kind of holiday cactus from my workplace when a co-worker resigned. Took it home, repotted it. Had it for two years. It just now bloomed. It is a gorgeous pink Easter cactus. In January. I have Thanksgiving cactus and what's blooming now isn't one of those...though my Thanksgiving cactus has had a second rebloom in February for the past two years.

Amy, I so look forward to your videos. You have such a positive and kind presence as well as great information about growing plants. I can certainly relate to your excitement over the blooming of your orchid plant. This has been an eventful growing week for me as well. As I watered my plants on Tuesday I noticed my African violet was blooming. I looked to see if there were any blooms forming the last time I watered it and saw nothing. Now, I have two stalks of blooms on the plant. While watering the Thanksgiving cacti in the back room I noticed what appeared to be tiny buds on one of the plants. Looking again today I do believe these are buds that have formed. If I am correct, this will be the fifth Thanksgiving cacti I have had to bloom for me this year. I've had some of these plants for four years and this is the first time I have ever had any of them to bloom! So, yes, I can certainly relate to your excitement with your orchid. As wonderful as all that was, this week I also saw that my angel wing begonia has started blooming. There are two limbs with red blooms that have formed. I am not a masterful gardener. I don't have special lights or anything like that so it really gives me a sense of fulfillment to see my efforts paying off. Mother Nature is such a wonderful gift. I am seventy-four years old but I will always stand amazed at how beautiful the world around us is if we will but pay attention! Thank you for your time and your experience in filming these videos for us!!

Neither bloomed during Thanksgiving! I enjoy the blooms anytime of the year. 🥰 Your little purple flowers are awesome. They reminded me of the surprise I got in my gardens today. I have a Lemon Ball sedum plant that I haven't put into the garden yet. A few pieces fell off of the plant and were on top of the dirt. The potted plant is on the patio. It has not bloomed, and there are no flowers buds but lot of new leaf buds. I have a Sun porch, 27 orchids, 20 violets, and lots of cacti. I will, put it in the outer garage while it's cool at night., see if that works. I spend the day on my porch so see my flowers daily.

Thank you ! 💟 I need me some "happy growing" ... 👍🤣 You see, I bought two new ones for this Easter, a white one and a light pink one. 😆 I have grown Easter cacti before, I haven't killed them, but have ended up with throwing them in the trash because they haven't looked good after having been to dry, or too wet, or in too much sun or whatever the "primadonnas" have had to complain about... 😉 All while my Schlumbergeras have had the same fate without any problems... 🙃 But the blooms are really beautiful, and it's so fun that they open in bright light and close in the afternoon / evening ! So I'm trying again... 👍😊

Hi! Love your videos! Hoping you can help me with advice regarding an Easter Cactus I just received as a gift. It came from a grocery store so of course when I got it I could See it sitting in water due to the decorative foil around the pot. I took that off and could see that needed air. After a week it is still soggy so I took it gently out of the pot and used scissors to cut openings in the flimsy plastic like an orchid pot. It is in regular mix...i would like to repot but it is still blooming. I have orchid bark mix and cactus mix on hand....its so adorable I just want to keep the little thing alive. Do you have any suggestions that may help? Thanks so much!

I bought a “Christmas” cactus last December. It was actually a bunch of cuttings that they had rooted in a pot. It was also obviously not a real Christmas cactus. A branch about four inches long had gotten broken off in transport so I took it and rooted it separately. That thing has blossomed a flower twice since then! I think that the poor thing is confused! I’m sure that the main plant was forced to bloom at Christmas time. The main plant itself has not bloomed again, yet. I have not been able to find a real Christmas cactus. Years ago I had a large Christmas cactus in a hanging planter which I ended up giving to my mother. I never gave it cooler temperatures to get it to bloom but I did give it a lot of darkness through December. It would have blooms on almost every branch. How do a find a real Christmas cactus??
