Hope you are all safe and well - this was filmed back in February, hence the social nearness.
Jonny heads on up to TSC HQ at the Oxford Gun Company to find out from David Florent - what is the difference in shooting a Side by Side and an Over and Under.
A rather mind meddling lesson ensued - perhaps there is more difference than we first thought!

Jonny at his best in inoffensive dry humour - some comments a tad sarcastic - but loved it! Couldn't help giggling to myself on a number of occasions. Thanks to David for his valued contribution and putting up with his 'bad boy' student 🤣🤣 Just my quick throw in on steel vs lead - If everyone has to shoot steel tomorrow - then we all shoot steel on equal terms - end of any conflict really 🤷‍♂️

Thank You so much for this video !!! I've shot all my life with borrowed guns and have always managed to do very well but watching the two if you get along and watching your teaching style and the lessons taught make me realize just how much I , and EVERYONE would benefit from having lessons !! I've shot everything except side by sides , one day hopefully I'll afford one and then proper training !!!

Well worth owning a nice old AYA and you can get a decent #4 for 500 quid so why not. Much easier to load in a hurry than an over under, but that's where the advantages end - however they are just a nice thing to own. I have a 1977 sbs beretta - love it..

I have really enjoyed this video. In the past I’ve shot both a over/under and side by side. I actually found it more challenging to hit a target with the over under. Typically I either over shot or under shot the target. With more practice I probably would have become more aquatinted with the gun and shot it better. The 2 shotguns I shot at that time were Marlin Model 90 and a Savage Model B.

A very interesting insight into the differences between the two. Everyone says they are very different, but without being able to explain why, so thank you both. The first time I shot my newly acquired, but very old, side by side, it seemed to hit very easily, almost like it knew what to do, all by itself.

Excellent video Johnny. Just lately have tried alternating between my Beretta clay gun and my Aya 25, at my local clay shoot. I agree there is a world of difference between the two. If I stick to one or the other week on week my scores climb into the 40's ex 50. When i alternate 35 ex 50 is good. I can shoot well with either gun and they both fit but the shooting style defo needs to change between the guns. E.g a long quartering incoming bird I track all the way in and break the clay seeing a little lead with the OU. With the Aya the gun is down as it comes in and i pick my kill point mount and shoot and watch it break with no apparent lead at all. If I tried that with the Beretta I would miss most of the time. I already have shooting withdrawl symptoms due to our clay grounds closing because of the virus. Lord knows what I will be feeling by June. Keep up the good work. Regards Steve Barraclough

I personally have had coaching sessions that so confused me and degraded my score, that I gave up on them. It is good to learn the basics, but the ultimate road for success is practice and more practice. For a new shooter his biggest enemy is being discouraged, and having to much confusing advise.

I love TSC, TGS lost me on the wellies. I couldn't trust what you were sayin anymore. I got a box of Le Chaemuex's I never wear. I wear xtra Tuff insulated (aka Alaskan Slippers), those are awesome, and then LaCrosse Snake boots for warm wet weather. - I just had to edit this, so I learned to shoot my side by side from his videos and as I learned I found myself saying "just there" "just there", so here he talked about positioning the O/U. I raised the stock up to my cheek bone and low and behold, the gun followed "where i was looking" just like he said in this video. TSC rocks. I was on target again and again without aiming, the gun was were i was looking. that's why i love my sxs so much, i never miss with it.

O&U shoots under barrel first as it is more distant of your eye and if a problem occurs you're more protected. The side by side shoots the right barrel first as it is more distant of your eye.

I have never shot a sbs but I shoot a citori cx white 30" (American 525 mid rib) with adjustable comb and I shot my dad's 725 field 28" and the difference on the skeet field on the speed and snappiness of the field o/u is so different compared to a proper clay gun and I think that is just the nature of the beast you buy guns for a purpose the lighter snappier models are for the field and the heavier models are for the sporting clay's course imo

Really enjoy shooting it, so do the OU clay shooters to watch with their Mirokus etc.. And yes, it will break clays at a good average. It's the person at the back of the gun that hits the targets !.

Nice to see the bird type shooter has a "vrs". As a 3 gun fan im tired of the 223 vs 556 vs7 62 debate. Never dusted a clay with over under but I did use a SxS on my first trap day...coulda been skeet. It was 1 shell per pull 25 per round with 4 rounds. It was an old Sears AYA...I tried to buy it but it was a handed down gift father to son and no amount would separate my buddy from it.

I live in Canada so I know this is kinda out of left field. But here the feeling is kinda both. On the one hand I extremely envious of your ability to defend yourselves. Self defense is non existent here. On the other hand, your guys infatuation with the AR or AK, etc, platform style rifles is just bonkers to me. Not saying they should be illegal of course, but they are not the end all be all. They are fairly impractical (imo) for most civilians, even for defensive purposes. The fact that anyone can get their hands on one (yes I am aware that is a gross over simplification) is equally insane. I've always felt that international gun communities tend to be more well grounded. Perhaps that is because we have less to work with, thus facilitating more creativity and professionalism?

David, your point about lifting your head is an interesting one! Over the 40 years I’ve spent in the gun trade I’ve noticed quite a few items. Guns from the Edwardian era when driven game shooting was the norm all had higher combs to obtain the sight picture your suggesting can be obtained by lifting your head. Modern manufacturers lowered comb heights so the shooter has to adapt to fit him or herself to the gun. When I was involved in the 2nd generation Winchester guns in the mid 80’s we offered 2 comb heights and the U.K. gun trade slammed the higher comb height saying it would never sell! Funny thing was within 2 months the higher comb outsold the lower one by double! If you look flat down a barrel your pattern is not where your looking. If your gun comb height makes you look slightly down on the rib where you look is where your shot pattern is! I’ve seen many so called coaches get this so very wrong and hinder the shooters development and future enjoyment. Keep up the good work

In my experience, many shooters in the US are, for whatever reason, extremely unfriendly to lead free ammunition. They tend to think it's some kind of left wing trojan horse or greenie plot to inflate ammo prices. It's annoying as hell because green ammo is a no brainer.

Same in Canada for the most part. Hunters who are not brain dead make the switch but many just refuse. Doesn't help that there are so few non-toxic, or relatively non-toxic in comparison to lead, choices out there.
@hermanmeilinger8018
@hermanmeilinger8018 2 жыл бұрын
Doesn't Dave say/imply aiming actually interferes with the goal of letting the brain make the shot? Did I hear that? If so, the O/U has no intrinsic superior value in comparison to the SXS. But it is heavier and uglier, both outstanding qualities in a hunting instrument! It would appear that fashion and a failed appreciation for the difference between a rifle and a shotgun, collaborate to influence the training away from the real goal/outcome, instinctive shooting for which the gun configuration is really irrelevant except for the fact that different guns are different. Competition may not have improved the breed if the purpose continues to be shooting real birds? With regard to the current popular forms of persuasion ( the conversation w regard to lead shot) It would be an improvement if we were to recognize that our fellow man is a human being with an intellect and move beyond will/coercion or propaganda/lying/emotional bribes. Great Video!
