The History Guy: History Deserves to Be Remembered

It was the second largest insurrection in United States history and occurred in the middle of the largest insurrection in United States History. The History Guy remembers when immigrants, police, African Americans and the army clashed in New York City in the midst of the Civil War.
The History Guy uses images that are in the Public Domain. As photographs of actual events are often not available, I will sometimes use photographs of similar events or objects for illustration.

@diln chil Nope. Ask yourself these questions. Civil War Republican = stong federal government and powers, loose constitutional adherence and support of a large centeralized federal bank. Do todays Republican party still stand by these values? Nope. Those values are now in the democratic party. Civil War Southern Democrats = weak federal powers, stong states rights, strict constitutional adherence and anti-large centeralized federal bank. Do today's Democrats still stand by these values? Nope. These values are today's Republican values. Why do you think the South was Democrat in the Civil war and now today are Republican? Why do you think the North was Republican in the Civil War and now today are Democrat? Do you think southerners and northerners just switched parties one day? Nope. Back in the early 1900 the party stances changed. It was a slow but gradual switch. So believe it or not, you are a Civil War Southern Democrat.

Yeah, that’s bad...targeting the Nativists and Abolitionists were one thing, but children? Blacks? I GET why my forebears were furious, but the blacks were just as much victims of the protestant ascendancy as we Irish and Germans were...the “benevolent “ , “ God fearing “ Abolitionists exploited the blacks for their own political gain; they were exotic “pets”, if you will, for these wealthy, affluent individuals because they had to have a “cause “ to place themselves on a higher plane than their Rebel counterparts in the South. Oh, I’m sure there were some decent individuals who had the courage to label slavery as the abhorrent and unconscionable institution that it was, but overall it was nothing but an old-timey version of virtual signaling.

My great-great grandfather, a German immigrant and resident of New York City, William Peter Eyring, enlisted in the 66th NY Regiment (II Corps, 1st Division, 3rd Brigade) in the Army of the Potomac on 11/14/1861. He fought in many battles, including Seven Days, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor (where he was wounded), Petersburg, and the Appomattox Campaign. From July to September 1862, he was a POW in Richmond. During the New York City draft riots, Eyring and his regiment were pursuing Lee’s Army after the Battle of Gettysburg. On December 19, 1863, he re-enlisted. On August 30, 1865, he was honorably discharged with the rank of 2nd sergeant. He died in 1916. (This is based on research done by my cousin)

I really like the movie "Gangs of New York" and although it took its liberties with history it was interesting to hear the names of the "Dead Rabbits", "The Bowery Boys", The "Five points", "Tandy" and the event that took place of the draft riots in your history lesson. What disgust me the most was that the riots started all because they complained about conscription draft into the army forcefully while the government had struggle to maintain order the military was running out of professional army so they turn into constripstion just to find the way to win the war quickly as possible so that no more blood to be spilde if the war to be extended but instead blood has shed into the streets of new York all because some disgruntled white people that do nothing but complaining

Regarding the 1863 conscription act, an additional provisional that incited the riot was that draft quotas were set by congressional district, and were inverse to the number of volunteer enlistments made prior to the act. In short, the most men would be drafted from districts that were most opposed to the war. Also, New York was not the only city affected. Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore and several smaller cities had similar rebellions. Finally, the timing of the draft was a problem. The first call up happened less than a week after the Battle of Gettysburg, the battle which is still the greatest loss of American lives in a single battle. The New York Times had tried to print the list of Union dead, but after the first day of battle the paper consisted only of lists of names of Union officers. At the time the paper was only 8 pages.

I strongly recommend "Rise to Greatness: The History of Canada by Conrad Black" I do motorcycle touring and a few years back before starting a trip through Canada, wanted to know more and I bought the book off Amazon. Didn't notice until it arrived it was 1100 pages. Read it from cover to cover. Really excellent. As an American it was fascinating to see how much of Canada's history was impacted by the U.S. and the fear of the U.S. Never had thought of that perspective previously.

"Most all of them, black men." So the depiction in the movie "Gangs of New York" is rather inaccurate. This tells me that most of the violence was not unlike modern football 'hooliganism' (vandalism) in Western Europe. A lot of shouting, threatening, destruction of public and private property and lots of plundering when the police is too weak to act. But the deaths were outright murders targeted at the black population. Much like the post Civil War KKK in the Southern states of the USA.

My great-great grandfather, Captain Morris De Camp commanded the 8th Precinct during the draft riots. My father's maternal grandfather Bartholomew Devlin, was an Irish immigrant and a private in the 13th New York Militia Regiment, Company A, at the outbreak of the Civil War. His unit defended Baltimore against secessionist in the early days of the war, and saw action at first Manassas. Morris De Camp was an interesting individual. He was a Lieutenant on the New York Municipal Police force until 1854, when he was fired for political reasons. He testified about New York City Police matters before the state Senate in 1856. The state legislature disbanded the Municipal police in 1857, and started the Metropolitan Police force. When the Metropolitans, on the governor's orders, tried to arrest the mayor, the famous New York Police riots broke out. The municipal police, who refused to disband, were the mayor's own army. A truce was reached, and the mayor was not arrested. Morris went on to serve as a captain with the Metropolitan Police.

That war was interesting in that most of the soldiers had absolutely NOTHING to gain from victory. Most Southerners weren't "cavalier" elite slaveholding landowners. Most Northern soldiers had zero potential gain from winning. No wonder many went West instead of dying for someone else's war.

@donc2446

It's not exactly true. There was some quasi slavery in the UK. People were not always free to leave regions or change employment. There were also factory towns in the US where debt and unscrupulous practices were used to limit people's freedom. Also, freemen of all races were often hired to do really hazardous work because slaves were too valuable to risk. But, I would personally pick all those difficulties over belonging to another person and worse yet having my children be slaves.

As it turns out, transgenerational subjugation is much more palatable when its mechanisms involve open-air prisons (housing projects) and a welfare system that discourages independence (income limits on monetary aid that, when passed and the aid is cut off, sends people back into poverty). Still, the only thing worse than a Union victory would have been a Confederate victory, so I suppose one must be grateful for the historical outcome we got. Thank you for another enlightening video on a topic that I, personally, had never heard of before!
