That last bit isn't exactly unusual. On submarines, usually everybody comes back or else nobody comes back. Individual casualties are comparatively rare, and if they do occur are at least as likely due to accidents as to enemy fire.

History, like that of the USS Barb, makes me proud to have served in the Navy, even though my time in service was less than spectacular. Not that I was in trouble, but that nothing was happening. It was a moment in time, when it seemed the world was mostly at peace. I kinda in a weird way, feel like we were cheated out of seeing some action. Before Swede Momsen, submaritime rescue simply did not exist. Not only did he invent the Momsen lung, and the McCann rescue chamber, he invented the escape hatch. During the salvage operations of the Squalus, a British submarine sank in a shallower depth, about half of the Squalus' depth. Only three men survived if I recall. The idea that 100% of the survivors of the initial accident would survive the rescue was radically different than all previous disasters. Swede Momsen literally invented submaritime rescue. On another note, the incident was the last time that the Navy's peacetime Medal of Honor was awarded.

Preminin was recommended for the award Hero of the Soviet Union. But the leadership decided it was peace time so he didn't deserve the award and gave him the Red Star posthumously instead. My opinion is his actions avoided the possibility of a war and he damn well earned Hero of the Soviet Union (and a Medal of Freedom from the United States as well). At the time we were adversaries, but to me he will always be a hero whose actions reflected greatly upon himself and the submarine service.

Though he does mispronounce the name of the city of Groton, Connecticut and though submarine duty in World War Two was the most hazardous, no casualties is not that amazing. Like we used to say, "We all come back or none of us do." The problem on submarines is that even if another ship is nearby, they can do nothing to help a submarine in trouble. The entire crew saves their sub or the entire crew dies with their sub.

In the 1960's, my school bus driver was a WWII veteran of the submarine service. I asked him if he had ever been depth charged. He said yes and that it was like being inside a barrel while somebody pounded it with a sledge hammer.

Many people take for granted American victory in the Pacific war as if it were destined. But it wasn't, those battles could have easily went badly for the U.S. if not for the skill and bravery of our servicemen and a little luck. There are no greater hero's.

It's not the hardware that makes a boat a "badass", it's the crew, both officers and enlisted. It has to be the right men that have the respect and trust of the rest of the crew that makes for "badass boat". no-one was coddled, the mammas boys were sent home to Mamma (SS303)

As a U.S. Navy vet, hearing how the crew of the Shokaku was literally blown up while assembling on the deck for abandon ship, is a grim, and heartbreaking, reality of Naval warfare. Yet, it was the Japanese Emperial government, on Dec 7th 1941, that choose to bomb Hawaii.

Brilliant as ever! I enjoy the changing range of hats and collected items . I particularly enjoy noting the selection of pieces that relate to the History being told. Has there ever been a movie made of the Barb and her crew?

Love your Chanel you don’t rewrite history if you’re not a fan of periscope films give them a look. They have films relating to many many subjects of America done as it happened. Please keep up the excellent work the country needs an honest look at our past. God bless you and yours.

US Navy: We don't want captains doing more than 4 war patrols in the same boat in case they get too aggressive. Flucky: Can I go out a fifth time, but with rocket launchers I can only use recklessly? US Navy: Of course you can, little guy.

One piece of submarine history that I would really be interested in seeing covered, and which really is history that deserves to be remembered, is the account of the Ictineo and Ictineo II. Since they were creations of a Spanish inventor during the Civil War.

I've known two guys who served as NCOs on Polaris missile subs during the Cold War. Both were orderly family men, very patriotic and also faithful to their oaths of secrecy. Neither man would discuss ANY aspect of the submarine service other than the food, which they both liked.

As a former sonar technician on the nuclear version of the USS Barb, I appreciate your efforts. The nuclear Barb had its moment during the rescue of a b-52 crew that had to ditch on the way to Viet Nam. Unfortunately they ditched right in the path of Typhoon Rita a class five storm. The Barb ssn 596 would approach the area submerged the surface to attempt to rescue the downed crew. The barb succeeded in rescuing four of the six man crew. The USS Ganard rescued 1 additional crew member, and the sixth B52 crew member was observed face down for several hours and later washed ashore on Yap island.

Thank you so much for your scholarly, entertaining and educational presentations. I grew up 30 miles north of Groton where the submarine was built. Locally it is pronounced Grotten.
