Seems like we are going through it now, and eventually we will rise up, just like the peasants. After all was said and done, the peasants got a lot of what they wanted, because no state can resist a truly popular uprising.

A lot harder when you’ve given up your means to do so in the modern age. I truly feel sorry for the people the UK who understand this and are surrounded by morons/cowards. Especially these days where multiculturalism has failed with the cohesion of common national values being called racist. The government now knows many of their citizens will comply with insanely tyrannical orders, lock yourself inside, stay away from each other hell you better not even seeing a dying loved one in the last breathe. And people overwhelmingly complied like actual cowards. Was this also your? How were people not ashamed of their cowardice? It’s a scary time for freedom of thought especially in the UK. It’s been very hard to watch.

"Fair" isn't an amount. It's different feom person to person, and makes sense only to short sided people. For a fast food job, to me, "fair" is 8 bucks an hour for a teenager. If an adult does the same job, fair is also 8 bucks an hour.

@HalfInsaneOutdoorGuy I also imagine you're the kind of guy who'd complain if all the restaurants shut down. Fair is not 8 dollars or 15. It isn't an amount: it's the amount necessary to live a good life. Jobs that don't pay fair are jobs that shouldn't exist.

Better than BBC docs, which are presented by fools and are biased and with annoying plucking music. Except Starkey but they no longer like him. In the 60s the media like the BBC would have sided with the 1381 peasants against the elite. But since then the BBC became part of the elite as the left took over, as thenew left posed as being concerned for the poor - which they are not. So now I suspect the BBC will be less on the side of the rebels, now that their lot (left) are the new elite, including the banks and billionaires. Rem how they ousted another elite in 1492, exiled them.

I was excited to see Kevin doing this event in history. There’s not much info on KZfaq concerning the Peasant revolt but it seems to have important historical significance. The ideas expressed in the manifesto by the peasants concerning human rights and personal freedom seem to be almost modern in their demands and their wishes for recognition by the upper class of personal rights and freedoms of all people - regardless of social standing. While the revolt did not achieve the aims of the participants, this could be considered the first time ever these ideals had been expressed in a formal document, paving the way for subsequent revolts and movements by the people for human rights and fair treatment for all - not just an elite upper class as had been the way going back to the earliest (recorded) human history. Thanks for the great storytelling, Mr.Kevin! I was so glad when I saw you’d chosen to cover this fascinating event!

Reminds me of a movie quote from the 1996 film Dragon heart. "The peasants are revolting!" "They've always been revolting, now they're rebellin'." 35:04 Seems as though the 14 year old king had a lot to teach his older self. He might not have died so pitifully in 1399 had he remembered what happened during the revolt.

I remember that joke from a Wizard of Id cartoon in the early '70s. Someone outside the castle shouted, "The peasants are revolting!" The King muttered, "You can say that again." I imagine he said it in a Groucho voice.

Interesting point not raised in the intro - if 1/3 to 1/2 the population dies, there are less people to buy goods, which would also affect profits. Nevertheless, this is fascinating! Thank you kind sir! 😊

Was excited to hear your take on The Peasant Revolt, I know how you feel about the common man getting the short end. I think the Revolt after the plague years was inevitable, with outrageous taxes (which lives in 'Baa Baa Black Sheep' about the wool tax of 1275) with common people doing better for themselves and getting the nobilities nose with their brightly colored clothes and pointy shoes, but more were sending their kids to the local schools run by the church so literacy was increasing among the peasants and one of the reasons that Revolt was so well organized was that with an increase of literacy they were circulating letters to each other with instructions. Thomas Walsing wrote down one these letter in his chronicle and its thought that they are cryptic instructions for organizing, such "John Sheep greetth well John Nameless and John the Miller and biddth they chastise well Hob the Robber and look shape ye to one head and no more." Thought that they are saying only have one leader or saying to meet up at Canterbury at the head of the Bishop. Chastising Hob the Robber might also be instructions to not do any looting but look for the documents with the green seal and target the lawyers and John of Gaunt's cronies. As for as the vitriol toward lawyers and politicians, well somethings never change, do they?
