Protas, McMichael, and Sandin don't fall into the 22 and under "young" players, but they're still young enough to be part of the Capitals' long-term plans and they've got a long time until we can start calling them older players.

@@ericekman4190 The Pens' current core is going to stay relevant a year or two longer than Washington, but Washington should be able to build a new core as Ovi's career winds down. The Caps might be on the playoff bubble next year and maybe a little better or worse the next year, but they actually have hope beyond that, whereas the Pens probably don't get significantly better than this year, but they have effectively nothing lined up behind Crosby, Malkin, and Letang. Pittsburgh hockey is going to be brutal in 2-3 years.

Really hope Ovi can rebound just for next season and get the 42 goals or whatever it is so that the org can have a clear view about how to proceed. I think it's on hold until it's resolved. I would expect them to add a top 6 or even 9 forward and a top 4 defensemen and have another go at the playoffs. Of course they are not in the top tier of playoff teams but playoffs are always exciting/fun and your favorite team should always make that the lowest goal (ha ha). As for goalie, they have Stephenson in Hershey with a new 3 year extension starting next season after this so I would expect the same two goalies until then. I think Keumper can bounce back and at least be a good trade option at next years deadline if the Caps aren't in it. I would expect another modest selloff of old vets again also regardless.

@@puckfittsburgh5539 So? Which part you don't understand? That Backy's 9.2 million contract has little impact on the team this season because he is on LTIR? We won't magically have an additional 9.2 mil to sign big names next season, because we are ALREADY using that 9.2 mil to our advantage this season. There is no such thing called freeing up more cap space because that cap space is already free this season, well most of that is because he did play 8 games for us, which would probably lead to about 500k to work with, if you call that freeing up some cap space.

Although the sweep gave the season a bitter aftertaste, I felt good about where the team is headed. Lapierre, who produced and generated offense despite averaging only 12 minutes a game, feels like he's on the cusp of breaking out as a top line center, and with Strome and McMichael, they've got a good center pole. But they need goalscorers to pass to for this team to improve. Can't wait for Ryan Leonard.

People rip on Ovechkin so much for falling off this season but hes still having more of an impact than the vast majority of greats did at his age. Including people such as Howe, Gretzky and Jagr.
@gamingintrospection
@gamingintrospection 16 күн бұрын
Howe had 44 goals and over 100 points at age 40. +45 rating as well. I'm not sure how Ovi's 31 and 65 points is more impactful than that. Gretzky had 90 points in his age 37 season and 62 points in 70 games in his last year. Jagr had 24 goals and 67 points, +16 rating at age 41, and 27 goals, 66 points, +23 rating at age 43. I can't see Ovi being that good for that long. Ovi had no impact in the playoffs this season at all, which I think is the most telling. When the speed and intensity reaches that next level, he clearly isn't keeping up.
@thatonewriter8043
@thatonewriter8043 15 күн бұрын
By what metric is Ovi having more of an impact? Look up Howe and Gretzky's age 38 seasons. Howe had exactly the same number of points in only 69 games, and Gretzky had 62 points in only 70 games. The only knock you can make against the GOAT is that he just couldn't seem to *buy* a goal that season, but he also took far fewer shots and still scored three game winners. Howe had a better +/- despite being on a worse team and did more of his scoring at even strength. I recognize that +/- is an incomplete stat, but when all of the supporting metrics show that the stat isn't propped up by the surrounding talent, you have to assume that being nearly even on a losing team means that the guy was carrying big-time (i.e., having a huge impact). Jagr was in the KHL his age 38 season, so we can't fairly compare the two, but as noted above, even in his forties, when he played close to a full season, he still put similar numbers to Ovi. And THEN, you consider players that aren't in the GOAT conversation like Pavelski that put up more points at 38 and you realize that there are like ten guys who had more points at 38 (let alone examples like above where guys were older), and you realize that while Ovi did have a good season at 38, nothing about what he did is an outlier at that age. You don't have to exaggerate Ovi's greatness for him to be great. He is one of the best players to ever do it, it's just that his legacy is going to come down more and more to being forcefed games and shots until he brute forces his way past Gretzky in all time goals at age 40 or 41. I'm disappointed by that, because the conversation should be how amazing he was before these playoffs, not how long he should have dragged his career out.

A miracle that the team made the playoffs being bottom 5 in the league in Goals For. Actually as a Caps fan, I was very proud they made the playoffs after being sellers at the deadline and where they were. Losing and getting swept are not good, but I think this season was still a net positive. I also think Carbery did an excellent job. The team is definitely in flux. They took some big steps this year, with Backstrom done and going more towards youth. Unfortunately, I also have to think that trading Kuznetsov was a positive. He wasn't going to play like he can for Washington and I think that this was a positive by subtraction. I think they have a year or two more of eating part of his contract though. After they won the Cup, I think the team has been badly managed. They really needed to get it done keeping Trotz but didn't. They've been floundering ever since the Cup win and have been declining each year imo. This year was a positive, but without getting more top line players, they could regress into the morass of the league instead of rising up.

The team has phenomenal depth with players like Miro Lapierre McMichael Cristall and Leonard. Right now lots of Caps fans are watching the Bears show why they made the playoffs. Young depth. This was a year where they should have been in contention for the top pick. Not squeaking in to be demolished in an embarrassing sweep. This is going to bite them for years. Lapierre, McMichael, Protas, Iorio... None of these guys are elite players. Some of these guys wouldn't even make a contending team's roster. They are NHL capable but they aren't guys to build around. We'll see about Ryan Leonard and Andrew Cristall. But even if those guys are building blocks, they wont start to find their stride until Ovechkin is gone. I really thought they NEEDED Bedard last year and I felt they needed Celebrini this year. They're doing alright as far as prospects go. I don't think they're anywhere near dire enough for tanking to be the best move forward, nor do I think they could have beaten San Jose, Chicago, and Anaheim in a race to the bottom. Not ripping off the bandaid with Ovi is really the only thing I can fault them for from a roster building perspective. They're keeping Ovi so they can sell merch when he brute forces his way to the goal record, but if they were focused on team success, you only keep Ovi if you're a serious competitor. They are not. That probably would have taken them fully out of the playoff race, but it would have freed up room to start developing more of their prospect pool. A pick around 12th or so wouldn't make a huge difference, but they would be getting more of their young guys some much-needed experience and starting to build toward their next window.

On top of that you got rid of Kuzi and Mantha, which will open cap space not for the coming season but for the one after. That + some promising players like Lapierre Mc Michael, Sandin, and Protas i think you can build a solid team. What hurt them the last few years was the clrar lack of starpower. They need a first or second line center and a goalscoring winger if they want to compete. And then there is the Wilson contract. We are just as mystified as you about Wilson's contract. I guess being the face-of-the-franchise in waiting and captain-in-waiting for after Ovechkin retires was the reason for the long-term deal, but his performance certainly didn't justify it, and this was two years after the ACL injury put him out for most of a season. Extending Jensen at 33 for three more years was also a mystery. He was awful all year and got smoked by the Rangers all four games. It seemed like with getting rid of Kuznetzov to carolina and Backstrom retiring via LTIR, they were finally clearing out all the 30+ guys so they could give a bunch of guys from Hershey a look and gain cap space to bring people in - McMichael, Lapierre, Malenstyn and Miroshnichenko all got looks after being stuck in Hershey under Laviolette. But it's in fits and starts and still a work in progress. It might be just to keep what's left of the band together until Ovechkin gets the record, and then finish. But there were so many 30+ guys getting injured and hardly any drop off from the younger guys coming in you gotta wonder why bother to wait. As 2023-24 went it was a team that could beat the best team in the league 3-2 on one day and lose 9-0 to the worst team the next. Hopefully next year will bring some stability so we can see what the true nature of the team is. Until then they're a cypher.

The Capitals are just delaying the inevitable for the sake of Ovechkin. It's not a great plan for the team in the long run... they'll get some marketing content out of him breaking the goal record (IF he does), but sending your team back to the cellar for years isn't really the best way to deliver on all that marketing. Maybe they can get it over with quickly by trading for Marner to feed him the puck while Oshie and Backstrom are on LTIR. That would be a fun story if the Caps and the Leafs meet in the first round. ;)

But geez, there were only two this season with Wilson and McMichael coming up 2 short each. In moneyball terms, they need to find 37+ goals for next season provided they can maintain what they have. A better power play will help. Thank you, Max, but the team can get more goals elsewhere. The relative silence on Leonard makes me think he's going back to college next year, but that is an uninformed opinion. Really want him to start what could be a promising career in the NHL. Look, I'll take off my 'I hate the Caps' cap as a Detroit fan for a second. As a diehard fan of a 25 post-season appearance team that got absolutely mangled by Ken Holland's awful contracts leading to an ugly rebuild, you Washington bros need to brace for impact. I'm seeing a LOT of comments on this video hinting at a 'retool' or 'light 2-3 year rebuild' for the Caps Full stop, this isn't realistic. Take a look around the league. You have the juggernauts on their slow descent (TBL, COL, FLA) and the young teams who have been developing a slew of top 10 picks for years in a complete rebuild (DET, BUF, NJD) who are slowly on their way up. Then, you have the teams who were strong during the 2010s, who some have still not decided to rebuild, like the Pens & Caps. Chicago saw this and got outta dodge early. Look where CHI is at now. They're a BASEMENT team. Every fanbase thinks their team is immune to the rebuild years for some reason. As much as I would *love* to slowly watch the hope fade from the Caps fanbase, I'm extending a favor to all of you in Washington by telling you that the rest of the 2020s are going to be miserable for you with the exception of maybe draft day. Your rebuild is about to be ugly & your team will likely be bottom 5 for a number of years. We'll see you about a decade from now. Hope you guys put pressure on your GM to start this rebuild now instead of chasing the Ovi goal record because this looks EXACTLY like how Ken Holland chased that post-season record in Detroit with contracts that handcuffed the team so badly, that he was let go so Steve Yzerman could step in. 🍻 Cheers boys

That's not how it *seems*, that's how it is. There's a mountain of money to be made on merch when THE Capitals player becomes the top goal scorer. We like to think GMs are there to build a winning team, but that's just because winning teams usually fulfill a GM's true job: to make the team as much money as possible. That's why Toronto's still sticking to the Shanaplan and why other teams stick to bad on-ice strategies. Follow the money.

Caps actually make a ton of sense for Marner.

I don't think it's the right time to tie up all that money in a star player unless it's a short term contract. Let them bottom out and see what they have afterwards. Also, I don't like Marner's mental. I wouldn't want him for the same reason im not keen on acquiring PLD.

@@ericekman4190Marner is only under contract for one more season. If Oshie and Backstrom don't play, Marner makes sense as the way to use that cap space.

@@aliyahjackson9321 That's why the Capitals could get him fairly cheap if they take on his entire contract. If his contract was a great bargain, the Capitals would have to give up some great prospects or valuable draft picks to get him. But because of his big contract and the holes in his game, the Capitals could get him without having to give up anywhere close to as much as what the Penguins overpaid for Karlsson.

I love the comments about 30 goal scoring Ovechkin being washed up. Is he a defensive liability? Woop, woop, woop. But the reality is even next year it would take two goal scorers to replace him.

Washington’s brutal. They’re probably the team in the worst overall position in the entire NHL. Ovie barely bent his knees this year

Not even close. They have prospects, unlike Pittsburgh, and they're at least treading water right now, unlike San Jose. I'm not saying I would want the GM job in Washington, but they'll be alright once their focus is no longer on getting Ovi that record. It's just that they would be more alright if they were fully in on the youth movement and not drooling over the merch they can sell once the face of their franchise becomes the most prolific goal scorer in NHL history.

I know he has. He has never been the same since lavy was hired by the Caps. Peter is the reason for his decline. Plus, he was devastated by the trade, got injured, went into the players' assisted program. Struggled in STL. Coming back to play under Spencer is just what he needs. Add his speed to the team. Look how many players that have come to washington and turned the careers around. CONNOLLY is a perfect example.

Lol people just want us to rebuild so we can be in the basement after being in the playoffs almost every year the past 2 decades. Realistically even during a “rebuild” we will be a fringe playoff team because the bottom of the east is so bad. We will not be Detroit I promise.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I just hate to see teams pass up their own interests for the sake of getting a player to a milestone. Something like Kobe's last game, where they did all they could to give him one last scoring blitz? That's cool. Selling the future for one last push with a franchise great? That's fine with me. But mortgaging multiple seasons to try to force history is both not the right way to go about breaking records and also hurting the team in the present AND long term. If they can build the team and Ovi gets his goals, that's awesome. There would be no doubts or asterisk to it. But they have a prospect pool that might be something, and yet they're pausing that development to fully pursue making Ovi's record pursuit an inevitability, which felt like they were just hitting fast forward until we saw how much Ovi looked like the game has passed him by in the playoffs. Unless that was just a playoffs thing and Ovi returns to form, I don't think anyone's going to respect his record at this rate, so both the team and Ovi lose from this strategy. Might as well try literally anything else. The current course feels like the worst possibility to me.

this team has been treading water for a while and now their only focus is on ovie breaking the record rather than winning hockey games not saying they are or have to, but the team needs to strongly consider trading him -- accepting a culture shift and resetting the culture, even more if Oshie and Backstrom's careers are over (very likely for Backstrom, idk with oshie)

they did not deserve to be in the playoffs at all. They only got in because torts gave them an empty net goal. Detroit and Pittsburgh would have put up a better fight. This is not forgivable for the forseable future.
