Known for his personification of the Western Hero, it was Montana-born Cooper’s horse-riding skills that first brought him bit parts in movies.
Subscribe for more Hollywood biographies and stories! bit.ly/HollywoodCollectionSub
Though he rarely played a villain and was an adept comedian, Cooper is best remembered for his strong, silent heroes. With his lanky country-boy looks and shy hesitancy he created a unique screen presence, though his real life was one of sophisticated elegance.
Over 100 movies brought him three Academy Award Nominations and two Academy Awards. Cooper’s most memorable films include A Farewell to Arms, Mr. Deeds Goes To Town, Meet John Doe, The Pride of the Yankees and High Noon. Daughter Maria Cooper Janis and actors George C. Scott, Charlton Heston, Patricia Neal and Joan Leslie are among those appearing in this profile of one of Hollywood’s greatest stars.

I really miss the golden era Hollywood actors and actresses. I remember a time when it took a couple hours to decide which movie to watch. Now it takes a couple years before there is a movie worth watching. Danny Kaye, Jimmy Stewart, Audrey Hepburn, Rita Hayworth, James Cagney. Oh so many worthy actors and actresses made for so many worthy movies to watch. Immorality has killed Hollywood

I “fell in love” with Gary Cooper at the ripe old age of 11 in 1960!! I loved the way he acted, the strong silent type,😍 he was just so perfectly GORGEOUS and ever since he embodied “my type” VERY difficult to come by, and though l had plenty of boyfriends and married young, l finally found him in Italy at the age of 54!! I told him he was the second most handsome man in the world, none could beat Gary Cooper🤩❤️🤩

He was known for his impeccable taste and style, much of it taught to him by a lovely American heiress. In fact there is a line in the song PUTTIN' ON THE RITZ: (Fred Astaire's version) -"dressed up like a million dollar trooper - trying hard to look like Gary Cooper, super duper.." He was an icon of fashion at the time Irving Berlin wrote that..

- Cooper, who was famously known for his minimalistic laconic way of acting, was once asked for advice from an up and coming young actor. "How do you create those long thoughtful pauses that are so iconic on screen?" he asked. Cooper, who was somewhat embarrassed, scratched his feet in the dirt, thought a little and replied, "Oh gee that's just me trying to remember my lines!" It's my favourite Cooper story and probably just about sums him up.

Gary Cooper was one of those people for whom the expression 'they don't make 'em like that any more' was written. He split with his wife for a couple of years which wasn't good but she seems to have been quite philosophical about it and in the end the 'other woman' Patricia Neal 'did the decent thing'. He appears to have been loved and respected by everybody both on and off the set and he was an anathema to Hollywood in that he wasn't smug, selfish, egotistic or rude but was generous, quiet, well-mannered and kind. A measure of his 'honesty' and easy-going attitude was shown by his very good friendship with Ernest Hemingway because politically they were 'poles apart'.

@patrick williams: I agree. His affair with Patricia Neal nearly broke up his marriage, but I have to say it's very touching to hear an elderly Neal speak so eloquently about Cooper in this documentary, and I'm glad she got to talk about him on camera before she died in 2010. She called him "the beauty of the world" and the love of her life. That's extraordinary considering that he was married and she went on to marry Roald Dahl and have 5 children with him. Cooper's wife and daughter eventually made peace with Neal and met with her, so it sounds like they handled the situation very maturely.

I'm not from the generation that grew up watching Cooper's films, but I have to say he puts most of today's leading men to shame. He was an original and the product of a very specific upbringing (growing up on a ranch in Montana when it was one of the last frontiers in America, going to boarding school in Britain, and aspiring to be an artist before he became an actor). That's one of the many reasons why I don't think we'll ever see anyone like him again. Also, even though there were many legendary leading men in his era, he still stood out with his rare and timeless beauty that was incredibly modern for someone who was born 120 years ago, stunning screen presence, iconic sartorial style, and authenticity.

Ernest Borgnine was Gary Cooper's best friend. I asked him, what was Gary Cooper like? He said that he was exactly like what you saw on the big screen. He also told me a little anecdotal tale, Gary Cooper talked him into trying his flying mount on a horse. Ernest said that he was speaking in a very high pitched voice for a time after that. He also said That the Coop would mount while running and never missed the stirrup and that he had never seen anyone else replicate that. This conversation was held in Lewiston Idaho in the early 1970"s in St. Joseph's Hospital where he was visiting a filmmaker who was hospitalized for a time while filming Breakheart Pass. I am not certain but I believe that gentleman was a Mr. Flowers, and I was taking care of him at the time.

Daniel Day-Lewis is a Gary Cooper fan as well. Cooper also obviously influenced actors like Harrison Ford and Kevin Costner. Plus, it's clear that Cooper's look in The Gentleman Died at Dawn and For Whom the Bell Tolls inspired Indiana Jones. Also, Costner in The Untouchables looks a lot like the young Cooper.

Cooper, one of my all time favorite actors and yes, hero! The epitome of the all American hero sorely missing these days with principles and morals! We're not like that anymore, we've unfortunately lost the idealism and optimism we once had as a society! We've grown more cynical and pessimistic! Boy, could we sure use another Gary Cooper these days! Thanks for a great documentary on him including his beautiful daughter!

I rediscovered Gary Cooper after watching The Fountainhead recently. I found him so appealing that I've since watched every movie I could find. I love his looks but even more his easy way of inhabiting every character he portrayed. I saw Friendly Persuasion and Love In The Afternoon when I was in high school. His charm, sensuality and tenderness has left a much deeper impact now that I've lived through many decades. Of all the actors from yesteryear it's Gary Cooper whom I find the most appealing.

Reminds me of my late son , screen writer Brian Nohr. Play wright. In L. A. Wrote Robin Hood for Warner's, Third Rock from The Son, Paramount, Si-Fi for Sony. We too lived in Rugget mountains near Poconos. Before , after he left Drew University, to California. We both totally admired, Gary Cooper. Son also tall, but Scandinavian. He too, as I 'm an Artist loved Art. I would paint his Theater Back drops. Cooper one off my son's favorite, but Robert Redford, and Paul New man. We. Loved Westerns. My late son was a Black Belt, and got extra money teaching at Bruce Lee Center in L.A. Wich got him to Warner Brothers, promoting international Bruce's films, while he wrote. Good times , clean, energetics.🌃🇺🇸🇩🇰🦅🗽🤠favorite:" The Pride off The Yankees". ⚾🏆And. High Noon. Worked at Premier , as ViP group serving, set off High Noon, in Bar , Champagne! What I liked the most about "The Coop," is how he always made acting look so EASY. Well, folks, it ain't so easy. But he could say it all with a simple, "Yup." My favorite early Cooper film was "Sargeant York," because it epitomized his silent strength so well. In his later career, it was a sweet film that is still one of my favorites, "Friendly Persuasion," about a Quaker family during the Civil War who has to decide to either follow the dictates of their religion, or the stirrings of their hearts. If you enjoy movies from a "gentler" time, movies with heart, catch it. It's important.

I first became aware of Gary Cooper as a child in the early 50's when he starred in High Noon. I really understood the action portrayed as he walked down that street all alone with all those conflicting emotions flickering across his face. Of course at the time to me it was for real but later I realized how talented his acting was - perhaps because he started in silent films?
