In this video, I'll go into detail on how to install vinyl railing in concrete. It's the same procedure on a wood deck if the posts are already in. I am using Weather Wise brand, but it'll be similar for most brands.

Thanks for this video. Will help a lot when I install my railing. One question, though. Do you use the leveling plate for concrete? The ones I'm looking at say the 'leveling' plate is for under a deck and is not used for concrete installing.
@TheHomeImprovementChannel
@TheHomeImprovementChannel 11 ай бұрын
HI! You're probably right I didn't have to use the leveling plate for the concrete since the posts have their own plate welded to the bottom. It makes sense to use it under a wood deck with bolts, nuts and washers and that will hold much better than a lag bolt would... It's been so long now, I don't remember if the instructions said to use it or not for concrete. I don't think it does anything but act like a spacer.

Great tutorial. Wher did you buy your products? Usually the rail brackets are about 45° and the one you used was cut to the angle you needed.
@TheHomeImprovementChannel
@TheHomeImprovementChannel 3 жыл бұрын
I bought the brackets from a local supplier. I don't remember if the brackets were cut at 90 degrees and I cut them myself. Seems like I measured the angle on the stairs and then cut the brackets to that angle.. 45 degrees would be to steep, stairs are usually around 30 or so..

Thanks for the video. I am looking at Lowes Prescot vinyl brand and was curious about the metal post you put the sleeve over. That seems smarter than wood most definitely. Is it specific to your brand? Thanks!
@TheHomeImprovementChannel

NO, it should work because the vinyl sleeve that goes over the metal post is made for a wood 4x4... so they're all the same size. The metal post comes with standoff's to fit the vinyl sleeve

HI, the place I got them from was a local small dealer and wouldn't mean anything to someone that's not in that area. Sorry I didn't list the parts. It's basically railing, there's not much to it. Upper rail, lower rail, the metal post, the vinyl sleeve. Stuff like that. Those rails usually come with the mounting hardware and the screws needed and the metal posts come with the hardware as well.

Does the bottom post need to be on the bottom step or can it be on the sidewalk leading to the first step?
@TheHomeImprovementChannel

I think it'll work either way, you just have to make sure if it's on the sidewalk that the post is still tall enough to meet code requirements for rail height in your area. Here's it's 34"-38" from the nose of the step.😊😊

HI, I got the railing from a local distributor in Fredericksburg, VA. The manufacturer at least I think they're the manufacturer was Mid Atlantic Vinyl Products. Their number is 540-891-5072. I don't know if they sell to the public or not since I got them through the distributor..the distributors name is ABC supply (540) 710-0800. I don't know if they ship, but you could ask them. These might have been more expensive than Home Depot. This rails I put on the front porch were about $600! Which I thought was outrageous.. the concrete posts did run the price up quite a bit. Yes, those screws came with the concrete posts ... Hope this helps. Thanks..

Trying to figure out which manufacturer is the overall best with easy like to install and strength, durability, userfriendly. Trex? I would like to know the pros and cons to Trex railing installation or PVC vs all aluminum or vinyl slips over aluminum cores? What works best for certain situations, like wood decks and concrete porches? Looking for installer opinions, thanks
@TheHomeImprovementChannel
@TheHomeImprovementChannel 4 жыл бұрын
I haven't used Trex brand specifically, but i've seen it and it looks as good as anything else. I myself prefer the PVC with a aluminum core because it's strong, and the PVC will last for a long time. But the all aluminum will too, it's just not what I like better, somebody else will tell you something different!.... I don't think there's any one system that's really that much better than the other, I think it's more a matter of preference.

The screws are going to be different for different manufacturers... I think I might have said in the video which one I was using.. I don't remember... hold the anchor screw up to drill bit. screw should be just a little over 1/16" wider than drill. also.ream hole because too tight will make bolt snap and you'll be "screwed"

Great video! I want to install these on my front porch. I only have 2 steps with pillars at the top of the steps supporting the roof, but the steps are at 17 degrees instead of the normal 30 (each step is 24.5" deep and 7.5" tall). I can't find any stair rail systems that claim to accommodate this angle. They all say 30-45 degrees. Any advice? Do you know if even though they say 30 degrees minimum they can be made to work with less then that? Or alternatively, if I make the stair rails 30 degrees on my 17-degree steps, would that look awkward?
@TheHomeImprovementChannel
@TheHomeImprovementChannel 2 жыл бұрын
Dustin, the rails will probably have trouble installing at that 17 degree angle. The reason I can see is when you install the pickets into the upper and lower they aren't meant to flex enough to get that low angle. Or if they do flex enough, you'll have big gaps where the pickets install into the squares. I can't remember which way the problem will be. I think it'll be the 2nd one. You'd have to buy them and see if it'll work, but I have a feeling there will be a problem. Don't cut anything and make sure you can return them before buying them incase they don't! The other problem I see without looking at it is those wide steps is at 24.5 inches, there will be a huge gap at the riser (the place where each step goes up) being 7.5" tall. Code usually requires no more than a 4" round ball can pass though there (if I remember right). I think the reason is so a child can't get their head stuck in the gap. I think it'll probably work, but might look a little odd. If there were steps there before, they probably had the same thing happen with the gap.

@@TheHomeImprovementChannel I wanted to follow up on this. The problem was really the brackets. They don't have enough flexibility to support less then 30 degrees. So I solved the problem by 3D-printing "wedges" that match the size and shape of the brackets. The wedges were printed in white plastic to match the vinyl, and sit between the brackets and the posts. You were also right about gaps where the pickets install into the squares, but I'm not really concerned about that. I have pictures I can send you once I figure out where to find you. ;)

Oh cool... Yes Home Depot has some of the vinyl railing although it's a different brand than what I used. The principals are the same. Mine came with the bolts for the concrete. IF yours doesn't Home Depot also has Hilti anchors that will work great. I used a hammer drill for the concrete. HI, i'm not sure whats going on with your railing. These rails are stronger than they look. At least these were. In many cases on a deck there are 4x4 posts that the vinyl sleeve slides over and the brackets for the rails are screwed into the wood on the 4x4 posts giving lots of holding strength. I can understand your frustration because of your railing, but it could be they didn't install them correctly and that's why they seem kinda weak?
