Yes, he was never evil, just unfortunately a typical "british soldier" who took the side of his superior officer instead of telling the truth. But he certainly redeemed himself in the end.

It kind of glosses over the brutality of American Indians though, irl they were even worse, just read about when George Washington accidentally attacked a French envoy during the seven years war (you didn't attack envoys) and his native allies proceeded to split the man's head in two and scalp their heads and loot their bodies

This is a great movie. It is based on the novels by James Fenimore Cooper. It is the second in the list: 1. The Deerslayer (era - 1740-45), 2. Last of the Mohicans (era - 1757), 3. The Pathfinder (era - 1759) , 4. The Pioneers (era - 1793-94) and 5. The Prairie (era - 1805). It tells the story of the main character, called Hawkeye, in the film from his youth, around 17 or so in the first book until his death in his 80's in the last book. It is a very powerful story and you find out who the man is as you go along in each book. In total the whole series are called "The Leatherstocking Tales". I read it long ago as a child (in German) and again later as an adult (in the original English). There is a lot to this film, including the amazing music, some of the scenes are incredible especially that one of the carriage crossing the bridge as you see its reflection in the water, very symbolic. The costumes are extremely accurate, based very much on historical records. The attitude of the English as portrayed by Duncan when he says to the general "But Sir isn't our motto, make the world England" is perfect, this is exactly how the English behaved wherever they went in their empire. The French were very different and tended to allow themselves to be absorbed within the cultures they met.

To provide a little further insight, Cooper partially modeled Hawkeye on Daniel Boone, and the capture and rescue of Alice and Cora is inspired by the real-life capture and subsequent rescue of Daniel Boone's daughter Rebecca and several of her friends. The massacre of British soldiers and Mohawk allies following their surrender is also based on real events. In the movie, they are allowed to retain their arms and ammo, but in real life they were permitted to retain their firearms but no ammunition. The night before, all healthy British soldiers, Mohawk warriors, and camp followers were moved to French lines, and unfortunately the assorted French allied native warriors entered the fort and killed most of the sick/injured British left inside. The next morning, the British column was attacked as it began to retreat, with wildly varying reports from 69 killed all the way up to over 1000 being captured or killed. Even the lowest estimate is still a substantial amount. Unlike the movie, Montcalm likely did not encourage the massacre himself. On 14 August, Montcalm wrote letters to The Earl of Loudoun (commander of all British troops in North America) and Webb and apologized. He also apparently obtained the release of about 500 prisoners.

@@jasond1433 I was not aware that this was based on Daniel Boone's history (he took part in Braddock's defeat) but am familiar with the French and Indian war in the colonies as well as the fighting that took place in India at the same time during the Seven Years War. There was of course Braddock's massacre and the loss of Fort Duquesne. The novel got some things wrong or maybe mixed up. Native American tribes allied with the French included: some of the Abenaki, Ojibwa, Lenape,, Shawnee, Ottowa, some Huron while the British had most of the Iroquois as allies as well as Cherokee. Note that it is supposed that the fictional Mohicans may have been the Stockbridge Indians or their relations the Lenape. In the movie the Ottawa were mentioned which was correct. The various allies did change sides during the conflict so this was not easily sorted out.

IIRC, the novel doesn't portray the British nearly so villainously as the film; Fenimore Cooper was apparently quite an Anglophile, whereas the film's director decidedly wasn't. Been a long time since I read it, but I don't think the sub-plot about the British callously disregarding their duty to defend the frontiersmen - and the revolutionary mutterings this elicits - was in the book at all; the events of the film are a generation too early for the American war of independence.

The cliff scenes were filmed at Chimney Rock State Park in western North Carolina, just beside Lake Lure. Western NC and the Blue Ridge Mountains are absolutely beautiful country. I remember looking up at the cliffs and thinking, "Gee, it seems like I've seen those before." Then it hit me--Last of the Mohicans! Was last there in April 2022. Worth the visit!

The blonde soldier ( Duncan ) sacrificed himself in place of the lady because he loved her, and he wanted to be an honorable and dignified man in the end. He was one of the heroes in the story.

I live on land in the Hudson Valley which once was the site of a Mohican settlement. This film was shot in North Carolina, but it looks a lot like the Hudson River Valley, with mountains and forests running down to the banks of the river.

Humans figured out basic physics in large part so they could predict where cannon balls, bullets and other projectiles would hit. Practically, they knew from practice how much gun powder to load and what angle to make the cannons to gain a particular distance.

I’m so glad that Ellie picked up on the sweeping grandeur of the music in this film - it really does add a huge depth to the drama and tragedy of the storyline. And yes, I feel sure the cinematically beautiful, majestic landscapes were included as a stark contrast to the brutal nature (on all sides) of the Seven Years’ War - arguably the first global conflict of its kind.

Those guns needed bullets AND powder. First you insert the bullet then the powder, then you had to compact the powder with the stick (that prevents the bullet from moving in the barrel). In todays guns the powder is IN the bullet.

Native Americans fought on both sides of the French and Indian War. Somewhat ironically, a young George Washington was a leader in the first skirmish of this war, fighting alongside Native Americans against the French for the British. Decades later, Washington was the top general for the US in the war against Britain, and became the first president. The French and Indian War lasted for about six years, and it started a couple of years before the Seven Years' War in Europe, which some consider to be possibly the first world war, as the fighting was between numerous countries in numerous places. Part of the tragedy of this time was the friction between the Natives and the colonists, but in a way it was no more than the friction that normally occurred between the various Native tribes, and what occurred between the various European nations. What hurt the Native Americans most was exposure to Old World diseases, like the flu and smallpox.

So correction for Michelle firearms related. The word you were looking for is cartridge not bullet as all firearms at that time used bullets. The bullet is the part that comes out of the firearm and does the damage. The combination of a bullet plus a brass container that holds the gun powder plus the primer is called a cartridge. This movie being based on 1757 time frame the flint lock was the primary arm at the time. It was almost at the time where the repeating rifle (cartridge fed weapons) were going to become popular but not quite there yet. So yeah other than a few unique variants of the flint lock most were one and done until a reload happened. Since I'm sure the British army wasn't supplying their troops with unique (AKA more expensive) shot variants a single shot flint lock is most likely what the British army had to work with. When Ellie was making that hand/arm motion I am pretty sure she was referencing what you needed to do to reload a flint lock weapon not for switching to a blade and her movement being a stabbing motion. :) As far as knowing where the shots are going to go they had crude aiming sights. Basically you put it where you think the shot is going to go and, with a term that is still used in the military today, "adjust fire" by changing the position or angle of the barrel and shooting again.

Those high cliff were filmed in North Carolina, and the forest scenes in up state New York. This book was written in 1826 by James Fenimore Cooper. This was true frontier life in the Americans. in the 1700's.

This is a beautiful adaptation of a great novel. There is so much good literature that has been forgotten or overlooked by today's twenty-somethings-to- thirty-somethings that there is plenty of source material that could be adapted into fresh, compelling films that would draw audiences for box office success as well as reintroducing the public to great classic stories instead of beating dead horses with increasingly stale sequels and remakes.

Apparently they filmed it there because it resembled what New York state *used* to look like back then and doesn't anymore. Seeing those forests makes me want to get lost in them, or live in a secluded cabin amongst the trees.

5:00 It was always gunpower and bullets, still to this day. However, the guns were not as accurate as ours today. Even today, people get ideas from movies. A handgun is maybe accurate at 30 meters. That is why people survive crazy gunfights. 1. most people are bad at aiming. 2. Hitting a moving target is really hard 3. Inaccuracy and bullet drop

I couldn't even notice it when I saw this movie first time(1994), but some years later I could see that the face of him is not of Indians, but the typical face of the white man, lol
