Great video as always. A word of caution if you attach a dimmer to a standard outlet: Many years ago, when video cameras were high-end tech and cost 1/4 of a typical car, I plugged a high-end video camera into an outlet in a theatre. Tested it and all worked fine. Then started recording the performance. A little way in the Lighting guy in the AV control room pulled down all the dimmers and the AC outlet I was connected to was one of them. It completely fried the power supply unit _and_ the power circuit in the camera. Be very careful what you connect downstream of a dimmer.

I have a handful of Shellies and they are very reliable. The only gripe I have ( common to most of these types of devices ) is the screw terminals. When connecting 14 AWG solid wires, I have had a tough time squeezing the thing back into the box without dislodging wires. I finally solved that by using stranded wire on the Shelly and using Wago connectors ( I guess you could use wire nuts. Ugh! ) to attach the solid wires. It takes up more space, but really makes it more reliable. This also makes it easier to remove or replace the Shelly since you don't need a screwdriver. I gave up on the Sonoff devices because of the skimpy PC traces that overheated and destroyed the device. I fixed a couple by soldering wires to the back of the PCB, but that is a lot of work to solve a simple problem. It is interesting that the eMylo devices ship with the Wago connectors.

I think the key to using solid core wire is planning out how it will be bent before attaching it to the shelly. I get all my wires stripped, then hold them in one hand and stuff them back in the box to where the shelly will eventually live. This helps get them bent/folded in the right place, then pull them back out and attach the shelly.

@@TheHookUp That's a good solution too. I'm still not thrilled with the screw connectors. I still have a few boxes without the Wagos and they seem to work OK once they are "stuffed".

Wow that sounds really cool! I wish I understood at least some of that tho. Is it possible to use this to be able to control a light switch via voice commands with Alexa AND the switch? Some times I walk into my bed room and just want to be able to turn on the light via the switch and the turn it off once I exit, but I also want to be able to turn the light off via voice or the app when I'm already in bed. Is there a way to do that?

These look like they would potentially help my setup in my new to me house. A 50's build with a couple updates here/there. I have switches that control outlets, but have a ceiling fan+light un-switched. Seems I could pair these in the ceiling with a smart switch to wirelessly control the light without having to run a new wire to the light in the fan and leave the outlets un-switched.

Thanks Rob! Awesome video as always. Note of caution, it is bad practice, and probably a code violation, to attach a dimmer to an outlet. Plugging a non-dimmable device into the outlet would result in... something? What if the in-laws come over for the holidays and plug in their iPhone charger to that dimmer controlled power strip or outlet? I don't know honestly. What happens? I feel like it wouldnt be good.

Wow! The Shelly App is SUPER robust. Glad to see you're back Rob, you've clearly been busy. Didn't think I'd pull it off, but I got my lights mounted and running and thanks to DrZzs running off WLED for now. I've been looking at the Shellys since your first video, but most of my switches are 3-Way, so I have to figure out the wiring before I jump in. Great ideas with using the "outlet" switches to wirelessly control other things, that'll work PERFECT for some underbed lighting in my sons room too.

The facebook link is working for me right now, it was broken before but I fixed it, so give it another shot. I've got a Shelly Relay idea!!! My Thermador gas cooktop, in my kitchen, has a 120v indicator light when a bank of burners is on. More than once, I have left my house wondering if the cooktop was on!!! How about using a relay that, when powered, AND when Geofencing notices that I am not in the house, sends a text command to my phone saying that a gas burner is ON? Which relay would be best for that?

Does it keep constant power to the light if you turn the light off at the switch? The problem I have (like many other people) is that if someone else at my house turns off the switch then my automations won't work so I was wondering if this Shelly device would solve my problem. I know that actual smart switches can do this but I don't have neutral wires at my house so I can't have them. Unfortunately, Lutron Caseta would be an option which doesn't require neutral but it's not certified for Australia.

What I’m wondering is if you can setup a Shelly dimmer with two different switching devices attached to the entries. So for instance on 1 comes a motion switch, smallest pulse is approx 5seconds, and on 2 a push button. The button is to overrule the motion switch and to use the dimming settings. Using the Shelly dimmer 2 with home assistant.

Great Video as always. I recently installed my first shelly behind a switch plate after I got tired of my wife resetting my smart lights by using the physical switches. Could you go into a bit more detail about the detached switch mode? What does the actual wiring look like? Could you provide a schematic?
@Take5Instead4
@Take5Instead4 4 жыл бұрын
The Wiring in detached Mode is the Same as in "normal" mode. The Difference is that the relay of the shelly does Not react directly to the Switch. Instead the Shelly sends the Switch State as mqtt Message with topic shellies/shellyxyz/Input/0 and Payload 1 or 0 . Your automation now can react on this, for example by Starting a script that Turns on/off the relay with delay and/or further actions based on the State of the Shelly Switch Input. I use a Shelly 1pm to Control a circulation Pump of my Heather per mqtt. The detached Switch Input on the other hand is connected to the AC Burner Output of the Heather and so tells this State to Homeassistant. The shelly1pm by the way Shows the Power consumption of the pump,...
@RippedWarrior
@RippedWarrior 4 жыл бұрын
@@Take5Instead4 Since you seem to know a bit about detached mode, I was wondering if the Shelly falls back to normal switch mode if it loses connection to wifi? I want to run detached switch mode but worried about losing control of lights if my wifi goes out. I would hate to not be able to turn on and off my lights because my wifi is down for whatever reason.
@Take5Instead4
@Take5Instead4 4 жыл бұрын
@@RippedWarrior if WiFi Connection is lost, the output can not be changed with the Hardware-switch input anymore, since the Shelly remembers the Detached-Mode even after reboot/power loss. The output state after reboot/power_on can be configured too, of course.

I have been looking for an alternative to mysa with energy monitoring for inline voltage smart thermostat for baseboard heat and cannot find anything. Ideally no hub and no external relays, but will take into consideration. For a new heater I need to add, was thinking to just buy a 1000W 120v heater and use the ShellyPM in line with a cheap double pole Honeywell thermostat, or use a sonoff th-16 with attachable thermostat (but ideally want the pm for energy monitoring) However all my existing heaters are 2 line 240v. The Shelly pm can handle 3500W but says it requires a neutral, which on a 240v 2 line heater in US, means no neutral. Any ideas? Is there Something out there that could work and still fit in the baseboard electrical box?

I'm thinking about putting a 2.5 in the first box of my 3way lighting. There's no other way I can think of to keep a device powered w/o rewiring the circuit. I have the type 3 wiring from DrZzs video. 2 relays can simulate a SPDT (3-way) switch and power monitoring can sense a downstream switch state. HA automation can handle the footwork of displaying on/off status vs power threshold. Dumb switch just toggles the Shelly relays' state.

Love your videos, . I did today an installation of multiple shelly dimmers. I have an interesting scenario. In my dining room I have 14 lights of 17w each exceeding the 220w maximum of the dimmer. So I split the load on 2 dimmers (still fits in the box) with 4 push buttons, on a single gang decora. I wonder how I can have both dimmers synch the brightness (and on/off) . So they work as a single unit... In tesmota we could have done rules, but unfortunately the shelly dimmer cannot use tesmota as of now.. Can probably achieve it with node red flows, but its getting complicated..

could you compare shelly dimmer control with fibaro dimmer 2 ? i'm looking to replace theme with a wifi based dimmer, but autocalibration, none-linear curve, blownout bulb alarm are sweet. and i don't know how shelly dimmer work with a single momentary switch.

Since forums nor reddit have been helpful, maybe you can help. I have a Shelly 1 that activates a siren in case of panic. I've gotten it to work as a doorbell buzzer, by configuring it to auto-turn off in 0.5 seconds. So, when I press the button, it signals the alarm siren to start, and then it remains on until I press the button again. This is the way it should work, so I have no issues with that. Were the problem arises is that after the 0.5 second delay the light on the shelly or Alexa or Google turns OFF even if the siren is still blaring. If I press the button again it send the pulse and stops. In other words this is not a switch with an on/off state, but a buzzer that you press once to turn on and once to turn off. How do I set up the Shelly 1 to send the 0.5 second pulse and indicate it is ON until it is pressed again? I would really appreciate your help guys. TIA Alex 0 Co

In the web interface set the button type to "momentary"

@@TheHookUp it is set to "momentary". If I remove the OFF in 0.5 second timer then the siren turns on, then off, then on, then off, etc. until I press the button again.

Do you have a video about the dimmer with the box you 3d printed?

Say... Since you already did your own DIY Smart Curtains, would you happen to know if it would be possible to repurpose a Shelly 2.5 and their rolling shutter / end stop sensing functionality to do a simple DIY Smart Curtains build using a regular motor instead of the stepper shenanigans?

You may have already discussed this but what is your opinion of the new working group Project Connected Home over IP? Do you think this will make it possible for smart devices like Shelly do you work with HomeKit?

I hope there is an answer to this. I was told to give both Shelly's a static IP address when one is referenced within the URL of the other.? But my ISP changes my home's IP address every month and to get a static IP Address is not possible without a third party like noip.com... getting more complicated. Did you give your Shelly's a static IP?
@TheHookUp

They meant a static local IP, not your external IP. Local IP addresses are assigned by your router, not by your ISP.

With all this talk of shoving things into electrical boxes, I think some discussion of The Electrical Code is in order, highlighting volume requirements based on box size and type, expected load, number of switches, wire gauge, etc. It's only fair, no?

Why a 3D printed case for the dimmer? It also fits into the Shelly button case :-)

Excellent video Rob. Nice to see the complete Shelly lineup. I like to see the quality and the UL approved devices. What are you running your home assistant on? My SD card on my RPi blew up and I need to restart. Heading to FB to join yours and Shellys groups. Thanks

I like the shelly line- up but I need a shelly unit that can be connected to a digital timer and when the timer signals that it is time for a number outside to be turned on or and off, that the shelly unit sends out a wi-fi or Bluetooth signal to all the other shelly controllers to turn on or off. please get shelly to work on that one.

Great video, my question is, I live in an old old house, my switch in the room only controls the outlets in the room, doesn’t control the lights, I have a fan with lights that I want to control from the switch, can I do this with Shellys?

Can anyone help with following requirement? I have two lights - (a) 23w led light and (b) 10w led. The 23w led(sonoff slampher) has mains supply that means when power fails there is no light from this, whereas 10w led(sonoff mini) has mains/inverter supply, so i want the 10w lights to turn on automatically only during mains power failure and turn off automatically when mains power comes back.
