My grandfather was a 00Z (Command Sergeant Major) stationed with the Chem Corps (101stAB), Alabama, in the early 60's. A family member recently came out saying that she has proof my granddad was a high ranking NCO during project MK Ultra and was deeply involved in it. My grandfather took his VERY classified knowledge to his grave on 1991, but his career seems to have been quite.... Involved in some historical incidents.

I think the Bay of Pigs should be on here. It was technically covert for the US and the sheer failure of it warrants it to be one of the top 10 craziest ideas. Like did they seriously think a few "trained" rebels could take back all of Cuba, especially when Castro was about to get Russian nukes

Not a chance. BOP and the few (1500) rebels CONTRAS weren't expected to be successful in regime change. They just needed to convince Russia to turn around and not deliver nukes. So success indeed. But more importantly, it wasn't highly covert for the CIA, we just gave up what assessts we had in place to military leaders when Kennedy (rightfully so) canned the intell heads trying to pitch attacks on America to him. The US military involvement was supposed to be covert and they did horrible with that....that's not our fault.

No, it succeeded in exactly the way it was meant to. Which is why the promised air support and other things never came. They were wound up and sent to die to get rid of troublemakers even less trustworthy with getting power in a soon to be nuclear armed Cuba than Castro was.

I saw an exhibition of things found inside the stasi offices when the wall fell. There were military plans for an attack on the west. The idea was for the NVA (East Germany) go in first, trying to reach the Rhine. The military planners assumed nearly nothing of the NVA would have been left over then, the Russians should take over then at the latest.

@@EC-dz4bq I lived in Europe during the Cold War. If there was an invasion by Warsaw Pact countries we would have been too disorganized to make and keep records. It would be considered a "combat loss". Right about now, the Dutch farmers would probably want access to those warehouses. My information is 48 years old. I'm sure they were long ago moved after we started to play footsie with the Russians after the Iron Curtain fell. In America we have over 300,000 privately owned firearms. Probably as many government owned and stockpiled additional firearms. As each of my children would leave home to be on their own I would arm them well. Most went into the military: combat arms. Some combat wounded.

If operation gladio resurfaced, I would definitely be the first in line. I was in the army for a spell and if there was a way to live a normal life, live where I want, do as I please, but spend 9-5 doing pt, hitting the rifle range, and performing all other forms of training to be prepared. That would be an ideal job.

Operation "Stay behind" (Gladio was only the Italian part) would not have been a great success. First the Russians were aware of that to some extent, including at least some persons names. Second at least the German part was plagued with incompetence to a level which is even entertaining in hindsight. And lastly at least some the weapons somehow wound up with criminals without the war ever occuring.
