From February 1930 to April 1931, the top Mafia families of New York were engaged in a bloody struggle for power . Called the Castellammarese War, on the surface this conflict seemed like a fight between the Masseria and Maranzano families, the two most powerful New York criminal organizations of the time. However, in reality, this Mafia war was almost a generational conflict, waged between old traditionalists and younger, more forward-thinking members of Italian organized crime. By the end of the war, the entire hierarchy of the mafia was shaken up and completely reinvented, with several prominent mafia bosses murdered and new, corporate-minded figures running the show. So how did the Castellammarese War start? And how did it lead to the sprawling Mafia organization of La Cosa Nostra that we’re familiar with today? Let’s take a close look at this violent period of US history to discover the answers.

If the Mafia has the same reach it did from the 1940's to the 80's we won't/ don't hear about it. Of course it's still around but between the RICO Act and new surveillance technology the game got a whole lot harder. The reason it did so well overall was bc of Omerta. The vow of silence. We know that's not what it once was, either. Informative vid.

Giuseppe Morello also known as Peter Morello was the first mafia boss of New York and one of the first mafia bosses in the United States. He was recognized as the boss of bosses in the first decade of the twentieth century. He was imprisoned on counterfeiting charges and he was killed in 1930 under orders from Salvatore maranzano.

Luciano created the commission but, it was Maranzano who created the five families of New York. What I mean by creation of the five families is the formalising of the five families that had existed in New York during the Castellammarese War.

Victor Masson That would be hard because the Calabrese mafia has been more secretive than the LCN or Sicilian Mafia. The Camorra also have been more secretive than the LCN or Sicilian Mafia. The only reason why I know a bit about the Calabrian Mafia is because it is the prominent Italian organised crime group in Australia and every now and again the Calabrian Mafia pop up in the news.
