NOTE: This video is part of an ongoing and long-term series evaluating the Singer "Heavy Duty" machines. At the time of making this video, I have not yet formed a complete, informed opinion about these machines.)
(Additional note: this is an unusually long and information-dense video for me, so if you're hungry for lots of little unrelated tidbits, this video is for you!)
Hi!
In this video, I use the Singer HD sewing machine to make a runner's water bottle carrier, and I talk about my still-developing opinion of this machine.

Love this, my sister has this machine she does alot of alterations and I believe it is strong enough for most jobs I still like a table with my machine. And Singer is still a better machine for me.

I have the Singer HD. I sewed a padded vinyl and corduroy cabin bag. Some of the seams were 13mm thick. It struggled but with hand crank assist it did that and the inside binding as well. Prob pushed it pretty far beyond what I should have, but denim needle and Teflon foot were absolutely essential. I don’t have an industrial to fall back on so I found ways. Thanks for your videos, they’re really enjoyable and honest.

I took your advice and got myself a Singer 237. Yesterday was spent cleaning it (it came from a heavy smoker's house) and oiling it, today I cleaned the sewing table it came with and this evening I put some thread in and gave it a quick test. Built in 1970 and with very little signs of wear (the previous owner had it in their shop and it was used regularly) it produced some decent seams without any bother. The motor is a little weak, but I've not looked at that properly yet. It probably just wants stripping, cleaning and the bushes re-lubricating. I'll let it settle into its new home for a while before doing anything else to it. I'm really pleased with it and it's good to have a vintage machine like this🎉

Ha! My 237 came from a smoker too. It does great zigzag stitching but I still prefer my 201 for straight. You are right about the motor being weak - I wonder how it would be on an industrial servo motor... I would say that the 237 case is horrible and it's way less portable than the HD (that we also have in the house) but I wouldn't change it

Sewing Machine Parts sells a motor that is labelled as a direct replacement for the 237, it's an Alphasew brand and is supposed to be more powerful. I've been thinking about putting one on my 237 for years, but I've had too many distractions lol!

Thank you for the explanation about the reverse coil zips, and how to put the slider on. So many people do this sort of thing in videos (and make it look so easy...) and don't bother to explain the process! I didn't know you could just reverse a zip as long as you have the correct slider. Funny how there's a trend for reversing zips.

I appreciate the work you've put in to testing the sewing machine. I thought it was going to be a dud, and you proved that wrong. In terms of value, I'd still buy a second hand eBay/charity shop (thrift shop) one, as I'm happy enough fixing up a vintage one. You can pick up a Singer for £20 ish in the UK second hand, compared to £290 for the heavy duty. But if i were a beginner, i think the heavy duty singer would definitely be a contender, as it works straight out of the box and looks easy to use. Keep up the good work!

Bravo mate- I have the same Singer HD as a putt-putt for when Im out and about- caveats are spot on, the walking foot is a good suggestion- Thanks for the walk through- one point I experience is the Singer HD does not tolerate dust well- housing is not solid- experienced some feed dog and tension isssues directly related to the collection of schmutz/dust and grit from bobbing about on a few trips. Bravo again- great review series!

I’m a runner and I may try to make one of those. I’m jealous of your machines. I had the same Sailrite but it was too heavy for a portable, which I needed at the time, and it needed oiled too often. On a side note, I think you are my “sewmate”. 😁

Pretty good assessment of of this machine. It’s not a vintage for sure. Excellent point for someone thinking about vintage machines, I haven’t come across any that didn’t need work. I bought a Singer heavy duty because it was lighter than anything I had, it was on a big enough sale that I couldn’t resist, non-computerized and lastly it wasn’t white with flowers for decoration. I’m 6’1” 200+ lbs and a guy who sews, ya know the ribbing I would have gotten with a flower machine. Anyway, I have several of my vintage and antique machines set up and I sew with all of them when friends come over to sew they are intimidated with the vintage machines but when I offer the HD they’ll take it. They will finally try the others but like the HD. Go figure, maybe because it’s more inline with what they see in stores. I like the HD series your doing, maybe make a vintage apron or shirt which I think the machine was really intended for. I did make a Navy style ditty bag out of canvas and the girl didn’t even breathe hard. Looking forward to more.

I’ve had an opportunity to sew on one of these guys at work, and one of my home machines is a Janome HD3000 (I feel like they’re frequently compared), and while I like both machines, the build quality on the janome just feels more solid. The Singer I’ve come to think of as “versatile but whiny,” possibly because it’s computerized and loves to tell you when it’s mad at you for trying to make it work too hard 😁. [[EDIT!! I can’t believe I missed that you have the non-computerized version, I’m a dummy 🤦🏽‍♀️! Now I have to see if anyone I know has this model and try it out!]] The Janome has far fewer options, but for basic medium-duty applications (like stitching through two layers of neoprene plus webbing), it’s never seemed overtaxed. Both definitely feel like excellent options for “frequent home sewing where sometimes you’re doing slightly weird shit.”

As always I Love your honesty and video style. I only own one of these and totally envious of all your wonderful machines. Ive found I can sew the fold overs but gently an slowly with the odd helping hand on the hand crank. Binding not found a good solution on this machine but learnt to work with no binding

Hi! I will add this to the list! In the meantime, I recommend both Sailrite's and The Thread Exchange's websites, both have excellent information on this. I hope that helps, thanks for watching!

Glad the Singer HD is working out, if only because it may convince someone to give DIY/MYOG sewing a go as a hobby, and more people making their own gear is (I think) a good thing. As always thanks for the time and effort put into making the videos. YVR

Don’t discount your experience with this machine is also benefitted by sewing skill. Of course there’s known quality control differences now vs old Singer and lack of customer support. A lot of the issues I hear new sewists complaining about is likely compounded by user error or inexperience. I have a bernette b05 which looks nearly identical and it sews great. I haven’t done an extensive review but I think it’s a great starter machine especially for people making infrequent projects. Pattern wise, i really like this style of running belt and will probably make my own riff on your take. I have one a little similar but the pocket is a bit small and only works with soft flasks. So maybe there’s a chance in the near future for people to have a pattern that’s pretty similar.

That's an excellent point! I suppose an inexperienced person slamming the pedal to the floor every time might have different results, that's something to consider. I would LOVE to see your take on this, let me know if I can provide any measurements or other info that is helpful to you. I'm strongly considering trying a pair of DIAS shorts soon ... :)

Good job, still don't know if I could give it's another chance. Maybe on Black Friday if it's on sail. I tried, I guess mine was a lemon. Well see, I like that you're honest in that your didn't want to like it. Sucks to eat crow, but at least you've got some awesome spices in FL

Hi! I was unfamiliar with that model, and it looks like it might not be available in the US? Looks interesting, though!

Question you probably use different gauge thread, for a double needle juki would you know which thread needs to be in the bobbin? It seems at work threy're having trouble getting these double needle machines work because I think, they're using the wrong bobbin thread. Does the thread type matter? Can you do a video on this issue? I quess the real question is should the bobbin case be switched out or the thread type be changed?
@thejasonofalltrades
@thejasonofalltrades 10 ай бұрын
Hi! Sorry for taking so long to reply! I have very little experience with double needle machines, but here's a guess. Thread comes in "right twist" and "left twist," and one of them is the one we all use all of the time. The other one is often used for the second needle in a double needle machine. I'm not sure if this applies to ALL double needle machines, or only some, but it might be a rabbit hole worth going down to see if that helps solve the problem. Good luck, and let me know what you figure out!

Being "vintage" myself, I prefer my "vintage" machines. None of my old all metal dinosaurs have any stripped gears or broken plastic pieces, like the newer ones that people have given me just to haul off because they are not worth fixing. It's probably easier to get parts for my 60+ year old Singer clone then it is for one you can buy at Wally World today
