Hi!
In this video, I show you how I made a simple and versatile "overland-style" truck awning from a Harbor Freight tarp. Enjoy!

I used the same tarp on my DIY. Testing in the rain as I type... So far so good.

Great idea, I like the concept of combining miscellaneous sourced components, modifying them and having something in the end that you had you own hands in putting it all together. Thanks, it was inspiring.

Hello TJOAT, great project showing how sewing skills can come in handy in all kinds of ways. It would be interesting to see a long term follow up to this project, six or 12 months, to cover how the tarp has held up (of if you re-did it) and how the sealed holes in the truck topper have held up to leaking. I know folks tend to be really shy about drilling holes in things (and not without good reason usually) but with proper technique and supplies it does not have to turn into a nightmare. Thanks again. HI! It's likely this tarp will make future appearances, and I'll definitely report on its performance. I can tell you know that I drilled holes in my topper to install my roof rack, and I've had no issues. I don't camp (yet) inside the topper, and haven't been inside it for prolonged periods of torrential rain, but I haven't seen any leaks from that previous installation, so I expect this one to be ok. I definitely want to make one or more different tarps, though. Thanks for watching and commenting!

This is great! We just bought a truck. Pretty cool concept.... I will have to come up with something like you said, i don't want to drill holes. Thank you

I may have to come up with a scheme for mounting one without drilling for my wife's Tacoma. Let us know if you come up with a solution! Thanks for watching!

Cool project! Very useful and not much complexity by way of sewing! You could also make window shades using the tracks. Love the visegrip as friend line!

Fray check might be an option on the raw edges but it could unravel over time.

Have you done a video on the drawer system in the back of your truck? Very cool.

I haven't made a video about this (and probably won't for this channel as it wouldn't really be a good fit), but there are tons of videos out there. It's the Decked drawer system, I've had it for 2-3 years now and essentially won't own a truck without it (unless manufacturers start including something like this from the factory). My wife has the same setup on her Tacoma. The drawers are waterproof, and provide lockable storage that is lacking in many trucks (and most cars these days) that would require a would-be thief to do quite a bit more work than just breaking a window to access my valuables. I often paddle/snorkel/run in places where I have to leave things like my phone, laptop or other valuables in the truck while I'm away from it, so this system gives me more peace of mind when I need to do that. (Nothing is completely theft-proof, but criminals are generally lazy and this would definitely be a lot more work to get into when properly secured.) It also helps us organize better on road trips when we bring lots of toys: our SUP paddles and other gear can fit in one of the drawers, freeing up space in the bed and/or cab for luggage, etc. I keep one drawer loaded with emergency gear, jumper cables, a towel and hand tools, so that stuff is available at all times but out of the way. I've been VERY pleased with this setup. If there's a shortcoming, it's that you lose a lot of bed depth (we thought long and hard about putting it in the Tacoma for this reason), but it mostly means you might need to tie things down you might have otherwise been able to leave loose in the bed. I hope that helps, thanks for the question, and thanks for watching!

I've actually thought about something similar for my truck. I'll probably end up making a set of poles from 3/4" PVC with a slip fitting in the middle, then running a 2-3" small diameter bolt through end caps to go on each end of the pipe (one for going into grommet, the other for ground spike). We used to make dining fly poles like this back in my Scouting days.

You did a great job! Wind can break or pull your stakes out. I use a rubber bungee cord to the stake and a rope to the hole on the other side of the bungee. When I lived in Fla sand wasn't the greatest thing to place stakes in, so screw in tent stakes or dog rope anchors worked well for me. I was at first thinking you were going to use std tarp plastic and cut off the grommets and resew the tarp. The reason that interest me is that I get sign tarps very cheap and HF tarps keep going up. I found Plastic and Metal grommet kits and I need a tarp over my Citicar (electric car the size of a golf cart). Sign tarps are stronger than HF tarps but they are very large and need grommets and making the tarp the size I want very cheap with non-marring plastic grommets just sounds so useful. A great video would be making tarps from sign tarps. At $20 for 100lbs for tarps is almost give away. I sold a bunch of it, the rest I have is free. I think I will have to get some out and test the waters. Keep the great content coming!

I love your t-shirt. I've been to SWAMP events in Alafia and other places. Thanks for the video. Have you ever encountered gators while kayaking?
@thejasonofalltrades
@thejasonofalltrades 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I love Alafia, if you ever see me be sure to say hi! There was a 10-foot-long or so gator at the put in when we shot this footage. We primarily bought kayaks for use in water where gators are more likely; we mostly stand-up paddle board when we're in saltwater. So, yes, pretty much every time we kayak we usually see gators. Do you paddle?

I've never used one, but I would guess it would be a slow way to do it at the very least! You could make a really thick leather tarp, though! 😂

Instead of drill I holes, you could simply tie onto roof rack.

That's true, although it wouldn't have the same "integrated" look and feel. But it's definitely true that there are any number of ways to hang a piece of fabric from the side of something and call it an awning; this is just one! Thanks for watching and commenting!
