The Elvis is racist came about because of a magazine article in the 1950' that said that Elvis said something about about black people shining his shoes but where they said Elvis said this he wasn't even there...Colour of someone's skin never came into Elvis' way of thinking.... Black people, black artists, black culture, black music was always part of Elvis' DNA and he never denied it, in fact he did the total opposite...he grew up in poverty but surrounded by black music, black churches where he would sneak in to listen....the music he sang was a combination of country and rhythm and blues... But in his own style.... He didn't steal it.... It was always there but what he did do was made a bigger audience aware of its existence and actually helped these black artists and musicians come to the forefront.... A lot of black entertainers and Elvis became friends.... Muhammed Ali, Jackie Wilson, Sammy Davies jnr, James Brown and Elvis' hero was a black singer called Roy Hamilton who he became friends with and his favourite football player was Big Jim Brown... Again a black athlete who Elvis became friends with... Do u think if Elvis was the racist that the rumours said he was, all these Entertainers would be the friends they were with Elvis.... Elvis actually paid some of Jackie Wilson medical bills when he became ill... James Brown spent time alone with Elvis' body before Elvis' funeral. Elvis' cook for the last 14 yrs of his life was a lovely black lady.... His female backing group for his stage show in the 1970s was the Sweet Inspirations... All black ladies including Whitney Houston mom Cissy.... In fact Elvis was playing a show and was told he could leave the Sweet Inspirations at home as whoever didn't want them.... Elvis reply was... They don't sing, neither do I.... Elvis was Elvis.... He was unique... The likes of we will never see again... And he was definitely not a racist.... Thx Elvis

Elvis loved, and I do mean LOVED black people. Every black man and woman who knew him, and there were more than whites, adored him and said that he did not see color. Elvis was famously known for giving poor black people cars, houses, expensive jewelry, and even took care of a black teenage college student named Magnolia 'Maggie' Smith, bought her and her mom cars, hired her as his executive assistant in 1974 and paid her tuition. Even took her to Vegas with him. She said he treated her like his daughter.

I love how Elvis' drummer, Ronnie Tutt, could keep time with all of Elvis' moves. Ronnie was a great drummer and passed away recently. RIP Ronnie Tutt!

Elvis was beautiful inside & out. At one of his performances, fans were holding a sign that said "Elvis is King"....Elvis saw it & commented that he appreciated it, but there's only one King, King JESUS.

I am 60 year old white man.I have watched and listened to every thing Elvis at one time or another. I have been to Graceland twice. I have never heard him say anything racist. Elvis respected and admired many black people. He was raised in a neighborhood right next to them, as a high-schooler sang in a black church with their gospel group. Most truly great black singers and performers loved and respected Elvis. I think alot of it is from the fact that Elvis was a Southerner and some people can't get past that, born in Mississippi. His family was very poor, and when he was born, his mother lost his twin brother. Imagine - two men as handome as Elvis and as talented. As far as his looks, I've read many black male reactionists and most comment on how handsome he was, assuring first that they are guys comfortable as guys. One said, "Let's be honest : that man is GORGEOUS! and I'm very happy in my skin! Another just rolled his eyes at the screaming girls and said, "Do I have to say more?" I really enjoy your honest emotions. Don't let someone else put out your light. There are plenty of jealous and ignorant people in this world.

You are right, not a racist bone in his body. When he was talking to the Sweet Inspirations he said, Jesus is the only King. If you get a chance watch the video about The Sweet Inspirations being interviewed about Elvis. You will then know he wasn't a racist. He loved God, he loved people. Or listen to interviews with the great James Brown, or the great Sammy Davis Jr. Muhammad Ali spoke at his funeral. I certainly don't believe that he would have done that if Elvis was racist. And look up the relationship with him and the great Jackie Wilson. When Jackie Wilson passed away, the only photograph he had on his nightstand was a picture of him and Elvis together. Elvis loved music and those who performed it. Many were jealous and did not know how to deal with his overwhelming talent. They would grab anything they could try and hang that hat on to call him names. James Brown stayed along side Elvis Casket for hours crying and taking to him. They thought they were going to have to carry him out of there. Check out Sammy Davis Jr. I am friends with several friends that was in the Elvis world. Friends who never screamed for the spotlight of attention but have great stories of Elvis kindness to everyone .

I love your reactions to Elvis and my mother would have as well. I saw him in concert twice as a young boy aged 5 and 7. My mother received two scarves at the 1976 show. We were in the first row. The King didn't move around as much as he did in the 1970 video you just reacted to but we enjoyed him all the same. The girls were still going crazy and a few fell on me during a couple madd rushes to the stage scaring me but not hurting me. My mother gave one of the scarves to a girl that was hurt and being attended to as we were leaving the arena. I inherited the second scarf which he had used to wipe the sweat off his face before throwing it to momma. My mother also went twice a year to Vegas to see him and was kissed by him. She said his skin was smooth and he smelled good.

Story Time - it was January 1971, I was in the Memphis Airport waiting for an early morning flight to Texas. I was hungry the gift shop had just opened so I went to get a bag of candy. Went to pay for it there was a couple of people ahead of me, all of a sudden everybody started to gather around a guy in front of me. He was signing their ticket covers, he then turned to me and asked if I wanted mine signed, I said my what. He then smiled shook my hand and turned and left. Everyone was telling me, you dumby that was Elvis, and I was like OK. I might have missed out on his signature but I got a great story to tell and a memory of Elvis.

I grew up with Elvis songs. He always seemed a very decent person. More humble than mist probably thought. True he was a handsome person. My Mom and sisters really liked him.He loved people and to entertain them. Was funny with his humor and enjoyed life. Never heard or saw that he ever acted racist. Sad if people think that he was. You should see the interview with Baz Luhrman interviewing his childhood best friend who is Black. He shares touching stories of him and Elvis growing up together along with other friends. He was inspired by black gospel music and went to church with black folks in his neighborhood growing up. He was not racist at all. It's sad that people still believe this. He was a humble man and extraordinary entertainer. There will never be another.

Elvis grew up in the hood and that's what influenced him and made him different from the music of his time. Everything was mostly big band music. But always used to watch the old grandpa sitting on the porch singing rhythm and blues. It was those songs that put them on the map and made him famous! In fact, he idolized Jackie Wilson! You can go on KZfaq and look for a interview by Elvis personal cook. She was a sister and he trusted her with his life! To show his appreciation, he purchased her a home and paid cash! I guarantee you most of those people that are telling you stuff that they don't know anything about having purchased the house for anyone! Especially someone that looks like you or me...

He was playing in North Carolina, and a group of young girls stood up, and enrolled a banner that stretched across the entire row on the floor. It said, in huge letters, and they yelled, " ELVIS YOURE THE KING!!!"...he stopped in mid-lyric and said," I'm no king, JESUS CHRIST is the only King!!!"....and they immediately slumped back down...

I don’t know what I like better...watching Elvis singing this song or watching your reaction..I love you! I was 17 when he passed and remember it well. He was to play that night in my hometown of Portland Maine. My sister in law had tickets to that concert. My dad and I were on our way home from work and there was a huge crowd gathered at the civic center that he was supposed to play at holding tribute. Sadly he left us with a lot of unsung music. ive never heard that elvis was racist, he was a kid when he started going to black clubs and hanging out with the great black pioneers of blues and learning from them. When elvis died, james brown stayed in the room with elvis in his coffin for hours mourning, so i dont think james brown found elvis to be racist
