Cleopatra Loses Netflix $2 Billion In Egypt Lawsuit

Netflix's Cleopatra documentary was ridiculed all over the internet a few months ago, but now Netflix is in a lawsuit with Egypt which may lose them $2 billion and possibly even more due to lawyer and court fee's which in a case this big will add up. However it begs a bigger question which is why Hollywood have to market every show and movie with a political spin rather than with quality of story.

History, you say? So where's all that backlash for white people playing Egyptians. Those Persians had all the smoke for a black girl playing Cleopatra, and the funny thing is, Egypt claim it has nothing to do with Greece and their Cleopatra. Since she isn't really Egyptian. @@ricsim78 I can tell you were very emotional typing that response to my comment. I didn't mention anything about about the old Cleopatra movies. High emotions is the #1 factor for selective outrage and you're clearly guilty of it sir. The History Channel have a large catalogs of Egyptian documentaries dated in the late 80s, all of the 90s and 2000s. What did you see on the majority of those films white americans playing Egyptians. No one said a word. The first "Documentary" showing a black woman playing a white historic figure broke the internet. You say it's not about race? All you hear is "they just need to make it historically accurate" and I would agree. C'mon..the modern day Egyptians never cared for Cleopatra why now? Because if it was another studio behind the film they wouldn't care. So they use the guides of racism to vent their frustration, so they can make a case to sue Netflix. AkA selective outrage, in its natural form. The only color those Egyptians care about is money green and they pulling everyone into their B.S. Why sue? Ms Cleo don't represent you. I would understand if Greece sues Netflix.🤦🏾🥱

When Alexander died, without an heir, his Generals carved up his empire between themselves: ¥ Ptolemy - Egypt ¥ Seleucus - Mesopotamia, and all of the East ¥ Antigonus - much of Asia Minor ¥ Lysimachus - Thrace, and ¥ Antipater - mainland Greece Kushite Kings who ruled Nubia and Ancient Egypt: ¥ Piye - 747-716 BCE ¥ Shabaqa (716-702 BCE) ¥ Shebitqu (702-690 BCE) ¥ Taharaqa (690-664 BCE), and ¥ Tanutamani (664 BCE) Amazing that I found this online in just a few minutes. This programme should have been listed as a “mocumentary” and definitely NOT a documentary. Are the researchers at Netflix so bad at their jobs that they can’t find any real information with all the resources they have at hand? Heads need to roll.

@@enkisdaughter4795 I think it's an issue of "building on an established brand". Companies see it this way: Which will make more money? Telling the true story of an Egyptian Monarch from one of the Nubian dynasties that no one has heard of? Or taking a leader that has name recognition, and insisting that they're black to capture a portion of that audience? If they cared about presenting truth and elevating real black stories, they could. They just don't think that would be profitable.

Its the DEFINITION of Cultural Appropriation. And its the absolute worst kind of it. Imagine if we made a "Documentary" about Shaka (the Zulu chieftan, also known as "The Black Napoleon") and made the entire cast white with the director saying "I dont give a shit what schools say, Shaka was White!" People would lose their freaking minds. That there are those who don't see this as horribly racist and disgusting is incredible to me.

Yeah. It's like all those movies that portray ancient Israelites as white people with fair skin, light eyes, etc. Just absurd and blatantly racist. What decent person thinks Jesus, Mary, and Joseph looked like northern Europeans? It's so twisted that people have portraits of a pale-skinned, blonde and blue-eyed Jesus hanging on their walls. Entirely disrespectful. It's really beyond the pale (pun intended) to think that Cleopatra might have been mixed-race--father of Greek origin and mother with some amount of sub-Saharan ancestry. It's not like Nubians hadn't been traveling to Egypt for centuries and at one point conquered and ruled Egypt during the 25th Dynasty.

Including the actress herself. Any sane actor would not want to take a role that insults history itself. Maybe she only did it for the paycheck maybe then I could understand. I don't normally comment on stuff like this because most of the people involved in the debate aren't really interested in history as much as they are grinding social axes on Twitter, so real historical facts are generally not respected and either embraced or dismissed based on whether they fall in line with the peron's pre-existing prejudices. But I'm going to bite because I've studied Egypt and most of the 'debate' surrounding it is silly. First of all, Ancient Egypt was a very African Civilization - if you lined up a bunch of Ancient Egyptians with modern day Ethiopian people you probably couldn't tell the difference. We know this because we have thousands of drawings the Egyptians did of themselves, more than any other society on earth the Egyptians loved painting themselves in great detail. In fact, the actress who played Cleopatra is probably not too far off from how antique Egyptians looked, especially the royalty, considering upper (Southern) Egypt was historically dominant politically over the north. If she'd been cast as Nefertiti or some other antique Egyptian figure then I can't see any objection, other than her being a bit too fair skinned. The problem is that this all has nothing to do with Cleopatra. Why? Because Cleopatra was Greek. Her family was from Macedonia. The Ptolemic Dynasty that ruled Egypt since the conquest of Alexander never intermarried with the indigenous Egyptian people, and they ruled Egypt like a gigantic plantation with the native people as little better than slaves. All positions of economic, military, and political power were filled by people of the tiny Greek immigrant population. It was South African Apartheid but multiplied by a thousand. This exploitation continued under the Romans until the Isamic invasions of the 7th century. The Greeks and Romans were and are viewed by Egyptians as foreign tyrants and oppressors who exploited their country for millennia. One reason Egyptians adopted Islam so quickly and thoroughly was that it freed them from this exploitation. For Americans, this would be like another country doing a 'documentary' on the Civil War and casting black people to play General Lee and Jeff Davis or doing a remake of Glory with the Freedmen soldiers being played by Swedes. There is a difference between having variety in who you cast and doing something that consciously destroys critical context to the story.

I read a biography of Cleopatra not too long ago. She was not a notable beauty, but was well-educated, charming, seductive, and intelligent. She came from a Macedonian family, descended from one of Alexander the Great's generals, which had been very inbred for several generations. The family (Ptolemies) was notable for killing close relatives in order to gain the throne. Cleopatra herself was forced to marry her younger brother, whom she later went to war with, and he ended up slain in battle. She seduced and had children with the Roman generals Julius Caesar and Mark Antony in order to gain power and to survive her siblings' plots. She probably fell in love with Marc Antony and they married. They both committed suicide when they lost the war against the first Roman emperor, Augustus, whose sister was Mark Antony's former wife, Octavia. Octavia later raised Marc Antony's children by Cleopatra.

Until DNA testing became affordable many American Blacks believed they had Native American in them. Same issue, their parents and grandparents had told them so. I remember KZfaq being flooded by videos of these people getting their Ancestry results to find out they were 0% Native American and more often than not, part White. Not everything you’re family says is true. In reality their ancestors didn’t want to admit that their skin was lighter because they had White in them. Or their features were different than most Africans for the same reason. Native Americans we’re an acceptable scape goat since they obviously weren’t plantation and slaves owners. Ancestors of Black slaves don’t have any family records though (none going back to their African roots and most not even any of their family in America before the civil war), so most of the time they really didn’t know their origins. This Cleopatra thing is different though. It is very well documented and proven historical fact that she was Greek. Nobody questions that Mark Antony was Roman! What baffles me most though, is why not really claim their own heritage? There were and are amazing sub Saharan African cultures. The Kushites built more pyramids than the Egyptians. They were a powerful nation that even took over Egypt for a short period of time. Their surviving artwork and statues show them looking Black. Darker skin, different facial features, etc… Why not do a real documentary on them? Be proud of your own cultures and stop trying to change PROVEN history.

They do not believe in equally, either. They believe that some groups should be elevated while other groups are denigrated and suppressed... depending on skin color (and victim status).
