Hi again Dave, I just discovered that I only half completed watching this video when you published it. So today I've picked up where I left off and finished the edit. I made one change - I used the generative fill to remove the join line in the sky area on the right. I read through Tony Kuyper's email today and that gave me the idea to try it out. It worked first time and the first option was the best. I left the prompt box empty as per Tony's description. That's a magnificent tool for that kind of repair. Thank you again for all your really useful videos. Great job!

The power built into TK9 is amazing, I loved how you can use Blend If and then exclude specific colors and or certain dark or light tones. Wonderful edit, one of the best Dave. You took this image and made it sing. It’s going to take a while to get comfortable with all of these new and useful features and I don’t know what we would do without you to light the way. Thank you Dave

An alternative way of setting up for using BlendIf together with Dodge/Burn is to use the BlendIf mask option to determine the "selection" to be dodged or burnt then shift-click dodge/burn button in multi-mask panel. Can still be tweaked with Edit BlendIf and mask overlay if needed. Some people may find this an easier approach if they are used to seeing black and white masks. Also the first step of Balance and Contrast can be speeded up. Since Foreground is already selected clicking Colour Grading will create a Colour Grading layer with Foreground masked in. Then CX/Combo mask calculator can be used to intersect with Mids 3.

Thanks again Dave, I was really impressed with the use of the layer blend if features and how much flexibility it gives in terms of changing the selection and seeing the effects of the image. I noticed in my own editing that if you command click on the mask calculator to keep it open then any new masks added are not updated on the calculator, nut sure if Tony can change that?

Great tutorial and am loving the seemingly endless possibilities TX9 has to offer. My only problem is that my workflow is in a constant state of flux as each week new techniques are unveiled. One request, is it possible to include the HEX codes into the PDF? For some reason I am finding them difficult to read in the graphic supplied. Otherwise, TX Friday continues to evolve and thanks Dave for your clear and cherry videos.

Thanks Dave for another excellent TK Friday. Question on workflow: You started off in Photoshop Beta to do a generative expansion. Did you then stay with beta or re-open the image back into the regular Photoshop copy? Thanks.

Hi Dave. Thx a lot for another TK Friday. You used the Multiply blend mode to enhance texture on the orange rocks. Would it work the same way if you had use the TK9 action Paint Contrast? Why do you prefer one instead of the other? Thx.

Hi Dave again a great video about Tk9. When you select the sky and foreground with Tk9 they are automatically selected. If they are not 100% right and part of the foreground or sky is still in the opposite mask, how do we edit the mask? It does not explain this in the video. Thanks Brian
@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
@thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly 10 ай бұрын
The way I show in the video is automatic. If that mask wasn't correct and needed some work, I would forgo the auto-save and just select the Sky or Foreground and then use S&M on the Combo or CX Panel and make any corrections needed.

In step 7 where your applying Foreground to a selection rather than a layer mask, im a little confused why? Im getting confused between layer mask and selection choice.

I'm dodging on a 50% gray layer using Blend If to target Lights 2, while using the Foreground Selection to protect the sky. The dodging involves direct painting on the gray layer, without a separate mask.

Dave, ATTENTION. When you evoked the Paint Contrast action, the new layer created by this action erased the content of the active layer, the one with burning of foreground through Blend-if, and all your previous editing was replaced by this step of edition.
@datstheone1
@datstheone1 10 ай бұрын
Actually it doesn't in the end. It looks as though it is going to when the Paint Contrast action pauses with colour picker displayed but when Ok is typed then the paint contrast layer is added as a new layer and the underlying burn layer reappears.
@Geers7Omoorstay

@datstheone1

@@Geers7Omoorstay I have double checked the video and done my own test and the Paint Contrast adjustment does not erase the Burn layer. Yes, it may look as though it does because of the way the layers are displayed at the point where it pauses for Colour Picker input, but once reply OK to Colour Picker that creates a new top layer and the original layers re-appear as they were before calling Paint Contrast as layers beneath the new Paint Contrast layer. If you pause the video at the point where Dave is filling the Paint Contrast layer you will see that the Burn Layer with the brush strokes is there. If Colour Picker is cancelled then Burn Layer reappears as top layer and no new Paint Contrast layer is created. I suspect this could be a timing issue with the Colour Picker dialogue pausing operations before Photoshop has sorted out the display of the layers. Having spent 6 months finding bugs in TK9 for Tony to fix before release I was concerned that I had missed something so fundamental. It may look wrong as it executes but end result is correct which is main thing.
@Geers7Omoorstay
@Geers7Omoorstay 10 ай бұрын
Much appreciated David, you are absolutely correct. I have given myself the job of downloading the video and seeing it on a big screen, observing in detail each step of the edition exposed there. At the same time, I replicated the process again in Photoshop and, in both instances, I detected that the Paint Contrast action (minute 23:03), at creating a new empty layer and opening the Color Picker, does superimpose the new layer on top of the Burn layer (black paint), even without changing its name (something entirely anomalous that Dave Kelly seemed not notice) but when it is finished, it makes the Burn (black paint) layer reappear as it was, placing the Paint Contrast layer over it. That is to say, I was not raving when I reported such an anomaly, since it did occur, but such a reality lasted the activation time of the action, apparently due to a technological failure, to put the culprit in a black box (although I believe that the Paint Contrast action must have something to do with it), it was my natural haste that prevented me from noticing that the aforementioned reversal was taking place afterward. During my first observation of the video and replica of it, I opted to create an empty layer above the Burn (black paint) and only then I invoked the Paint Contrast action, which worked fine, but it left that empty layer in the layers palette, which must have been a red flag to me, but I missed it. This epistolary exchange has left me very grateful for giving me the opportunity to run into your person, someone so generous with his own space and time to enlighten me with simplicity and kindness about a partial observation of mine, who was also persistent in his idea when I found his statement unbelievable. This introspection has been a real pleasure for me because it was extremely valuable. @@datstheone1
