Woodturning | How to Make a Celtic Knot Rolling Pin

In this video I make a table saw sled to make perfect Celtic knots in rolling pins. This was worth the time to make as the first knot turned out fantastic!

Lewis.....I wish i could like and subscribe more than once! That rolling pin is just gorgeous....WAY to beautiful to use! My hat is off to you for leaving the boo boos in the video. I have to wonder.....how many youtube turners wouldve edited those out? In my opinion, those things add honesty, and integrity to your work. Well done sir! Lewis, I've watched only one person do the Celtic knots before. Huw at Wooden-it-be-nice. But he was doing pens! He struggled with the small size for sure. Watching this larger one, now it actually makes sense 😆 to me. Thanks for sharing your creativity with me again. Stay safe, Vickie

nicely done, made lots of celtic knots myself. my favourite is a 6 loop in a pen. the six loop knot is done the same way but with a hexagonal blank. for a pen blank i use my bandsaw to cut the kerfs

Hi Lewis, That is a beautiful rolling pin and I'm sure Bruce will love it. I have followed Bruce for a very long time and his is a great person. You are the firs person I have seen make a rolling pin this way in not cutting all the way through. It is the only way to make sure the alignment is true in the rings and it is how I make my Celtic Knot pens. Great way of making the sled as well. I will probably have a go at making one of these in the future. Take care Lewis. Cheers, Huw PS The tip for starting the cut, at the same end, is so important. Please don't ask how I found that out for myself. LOL.

Very nice 👍 question: have you experienced any problems with wood movement? I know that it is not 100 % opposite, but it is not running in the same direction either. But perhaps it doesn't matter ?

Well done. I wasn't sure about the jig...to start the kerf, did you use your mark or have the piece against a block? I like the glue up, having the blank bigger than the cut. Is your plan available on paper, or article?

Couldn’t you have knocked out 2 cuts at a time had you left the saw kerf intact on the same side?

Never mind, I think I’ve detected the flaw in my logic. I think you’d need an X shaped cradle to alternate angles, but am I wrong in thinking that would cut the build time down significantly?

I cut one at a time to eliminate any movement that could occur in the second cut as there is only 1/4 holding it together. Also the insert wouldn’t slide past rash other. It really isn’t a long wait time between cuts especially if you are doing a few at a time. Thanks for watching Frank!

Watching from above, you ought to see how close your hair gets to that spindle. Accident waiting to happen.

I appreciate the concern but watching from above might make it look close when in fact it is no where near the spindle. The spindle is lower than my elbows and my hair is above my shoulders. Thanks for watching!
