before 1962 war the army commanders were told in 1959 by the government to take care of chinese border but the generals failed no army unit took suitable heights and arranged defence they just ran

I have been tracking Field Marshal since a long time and whenever he is renembered anywhere at any time or place , believe me as a gentleman I get a sense of pride to salute such a great SOLDIER. Thanks a lot to Lallantop and Saurabh Dwiwedi for such enlightened conversation. Few anecdotes which I knew from some other sources got vetted & authenticated by a distinguished veteran, none other than Brigadier who has a treasure of 1st hand knowledge of d happenings of historical significance. At d same time I wish to ventilate my anguish boiling in inner core of my psyche for so many years that for decades our Field Marshal Manekshaw draw a meagre amount of Rs.1600/- as pension until President Kalam took personal initiative to fix d wrong doing. Amount is not important, but attitude of d people in power-corridor. Our Jawans (all and sundry : from bottom to top irrespective of rank & post including veterans) deserve best of respect & honourable treatment, and we, the masses by and large do pay, but whether politicians & bureaucrats do care? I feel more hurt to note that people in power except two exceptions (Shastri & Modi) remained unconcerned to the cause and aspirations of the forces. It’s evident from d fact that power at Centre remained changing hands among many shades of political outfits, but justice couldn’t be delivered in Field Marshal’s case, nor d very legitimate demand of the forces for OROP could be addressed for decades until Modi took up the matter, but thanks to our great bureaucracy, Modi’s initiative remained only half done.. Pt. Nehru thought of the Military an unnecessary burden. He scolded General Roy Bucher and categorically asserted, “India is a peaceful country, we don’t need military’, when he called on Nehru with a plan for modernisation of Indian Army. Result of his such approach was manifested in our humiliating defeat during Chinese aggression in 1962, despite exemplary bravery of our soldiers. Process of authoring this book reminds me of d legendary epic Mahabharat authored by Maharshi Ved Vyas and jotted down by Lord Ganesh. Basketful applause to both for the praise-worthy work and also to Saurabh Dwivedi for showcasing this wonderful book, a must to go through by all those interested in details of milestone happenings which shaped rebuilding of our Nation. I would like to purchase one. Is its digital edition available? If not, I shall go for hard copy.

Thank you very much for showing this long interview and also for so beautifully interacting with the authors of the book-retired Army Officer and his wife. I have a special place in my heart for Indian Forces and one of my heroes is Field Marshall Sam Manekshaw. What a true hero he was. He brought us glory by liberating Bangladesh from Pakistan under the leadership of Indira Gandhi-the best thing she did in her life. I was however very much puzzled about how small pension Field Marshall was awarded-only Rs.1600/- or did I hear wrong? I thought army officer of that cadre must receive a pension of at least Rs. 2 to 3 Lakhs a month.
