Just got onto your channel as I bought a Husqvarna Viking s25 combo machine. Must say I love it. It does take around 5 minutes to convert, but having all the tensions set automatically is a true blessing. And so is the “Sewing Advisor” which will change all tensions, stitch length and differential feed according to the fabric type I choose. It makes it all very easy.

I just discovered your channel. I have bought the brother 2 weeks ago and yesterday I was sewing for the first time with it. I am really in love with it. Since I already own a brother sewing machine and a serger it was a no brainer to get the coverstitch. My first piece that I finished with it just feels so amazing!

Hello from Ireland and thank you for this very interesting series of coverstitch videos. I actually had the Brother machine that you refer to CV3550 and although I had great hopes for it...I decided to return it and it was too frustrating to fine tune it to make it work. There was more adjusting than actual sewing and I don't have time for it. It's a beautiful piece of equipment, but very fiddly and requires a lot of patience and love, which I didn't have. I'm sure many ppl would be delighted with it, especially for the top stitch option, I wasn't. Since then I'm a happy owner of Babylock Gloria (Triumph in US) and this is how driving P1 or Bugatti must feel. It's smooth, precise and works out of the box. No adjustments needed, operating it is a dream. It doesn't have any of those common coverstitch issues and I'm just a beginner in sewing and even more so in coverstitching. Not a single skipped stitch since I got it few weeks ago. I can't recommend it enough, but I understand that price might be an issue. Hope this helps someone. I did it! Purchased the Janome 2000CPX, have worked with it about 1 hour and I LOVE IT! It's smooth and precise.

Wow 3 years later and this video is still ever so helpful. I finally decided to take the plunge and purchase a cover stitch machine. I've decided to go with the janome 900. I think it will do everything I want it to do without all the extra bells and whistles and problems that can come with that. So now I imagine I will be off to purchase your cover stitch book. I bought the jeans book and I love it.

To help the foot petal stay put, I attached the wide (abt 2” wide) Velcro to the petal (1 side) and the other side to the carpet (or floor). Measure the length of the petal, use about 3-4”, in order to get the best grip. It stays put and doesn’t move around. With the petal being rather cheap and having no weight to it, the Velcro made it work! ✂️

I love my Brother 3550CV double side coverstitch machine! A two of my sergers can convert to coverstitch but having a stand-alone coverstitch machine is the best if one often makes garments. The double side coverstitch machine is great to embellish garments, too. Too many people under-use their coverstitch and serger machines! This is a great video and I hope it motivates people to learn to use their coverstitch and overlocker machines to their full potential. Thank-you. I hope to read your book.

Extremely interesting video. I have a combination cover stitch and am getting ready to TRY to use it as it is a very long time since it was last used. I'm really still quite a beginner - got my Juki MCS-1500 in July of last year - but so far, I love it! I had tried coverstitching with my combo serger, and it did a great job with wovens, but it ate knits like they were dessert. I'm hoping to learn about attachments and how to use them, even though I know there aren't many available specifically for the Juki... but there are some generics.

Hi Johanna. You seem to be on the right track. More cover stitching information is really needed and to obtain that info. one has to search and search some more. Would be great especially for the new sewist to have a good comprehensive source. Am sure you will do a great job. I have an Ovation and I highly recommend it. I bought it about 3 years ago and haven't looked back. The possibilities are endless especially as there are so many decorative threads available. Have used it with knits, cotton type wovens, wools, denims, canvas and even burlap. Usually if I am having difficulties, have found it has been user error and there is a great video explaining how to recheck settings, etc. and good user guide which came with the machine. Always an easy fix. I have fewer of these moments now. The secret is to learn your machine! I don't have any problems with threading and changing the functions. Hope this helps. Cheers. JoAn

I have just bought the Janome CoverPro 2000cpx. I was originally thinking of BabyLock or Juki standalone machines after reading reviews of all of them but my local dealer (who sells all of them but they are not all available for demo) recommended this one. I only found your videos today but had already pre-ordered your book. I'm looking forward to better looking hems on stretch knits.

I have the Bernina 1260 as well and couldn’t agree more that the pedal is superior. I did see where a replacement of this pedal is $600 so I made sure to keep the cat away from chewing the pedal cord. I have a Brother 2340 CV coverstich and it has a cheap lightweight pedal that might as well be an on/off switch with regards to speed. Reminds me of my first kid’s sewing machine I had in kindergarten. The Brother machine for the price has performed well enough but I doubt I would ever even attempt to run layers of denim or heavier weight wovens through it. I have an industrial cylinder machine for leather stitching and it shocks you just how much motor is needed to plow through multiple upholstery weight fabrics or leather. Problem with all industrial machines is you need a servo motor to run them requiring an under table mount and a big foot print in your studio. I plan on ordering your book, in my Amazon wish list. Just to add to what you have said. I didn't start having success on my CoverPro until I used Gutermann thread for the needles. Overlock thread is OK for the lopper but the needles are fussy about thread in my experience.

I love the twin needle for recreating pintucks on delicate woven fabrics like linen or cottons.

Ok the thing about belt loops being coverstitched blew my mind!!! Never heard of that before

To set tension on the industrial machine they use a little device that you hook the thread to and measure tension directly.

So I ordered your book yesterday from Amazon. I cant wait to read it. I'm also looking into that Brother 3550. Great videos!

Love that you're sharing so much tried & true knowledge with us newbies I just opened the box of my Janome 900cpx. As a videographer I hope you don't mind me mentioning that your white level on the videos is too high. It makes the footage too bright and hard to see any detail especially on a white machine or a light fabric. You can adjust it in your video editor, but best to do it in your camera settings if using one with those options. Oh, another easy way to reduce brightness is put a filter over your light, or move the lighting farther away. Best Regards to you, Mary

I have a Brother 2340 Cover Stitch. It has some good points but some not. Only problem is the ending. It had 3 thread capability. Also uses 2 thread as well as a single chain stitch. I would love to have one that finishes the end. Threading is simple and easy. I much prefer the cover stitch over the 2 needle hem.

Hi Johanna~I just pre-ordered your book. I have the Babylock Evolution serger/coverstitch combo but have *never* used the coverstitch function, even tho I’ve owned it for 10 years or so. (Sad!) Mostly because a) I don’t know what I’m doing re: coverstitching and b) it’s a lot of work changing the machine over. I’m hoping that if I can conquer a), b) will become easier, so really, really looking forward to your book. Would love to see some follow on videos! Thanks! P.S. Oh. I see you “cover” the combo machines!!! Yep. Changing the machine over from serger to coverstitch is enough of a pain that will prevent one from using the machine to its full potential.

Serger it`s the same as a overlock(Norway) I have Brother overlock and consider buy Brother Coverstitch 3440

I have so many machines I need to make a KZfaq channel I got the juki 1500 and it’s so touchy and I just got a baby lock evolution and the cover stitch is so much easier no more thread coming out of the needle and it chains off and much more user friendly I don’t want to sell it because I really want it to work out for me but the Babylock is so much more easier to use

I do not own a coverstitch machine. Not sure I need one because not sure "exactly" what they do? I've owned Featherweights, older Singer, Pfaff, 2 Berninas, Janome 9000 (New Home) embroidery, Elna Lotus, Juki industrial straight stitch, Bernina and White Sergers. I do not have any serious complaints about any of these machines, nor can I say one machine is better over others. They all have their strong points. I've seen the combo coverstitch/serger combo but I understand you must make adjustments every time you change from one function to another. Money is not a real concern, just need to know if coverstitch is useful??

me too! I put that 5th out of commission in 2005 as I found sewing a straight stitch on my walking foot Nakjima 280ly or Juki DDL-8700 gave me a better straight stitch.

I don’t have a coverstitch, think about it, but unsure, think I would get it before a serger... as I feel it’s more useful, especially on finishing knits.

I have burned out motors on the domestic machines. I found the serger style home machines need to rest often. Doing heavy sewing for hours kills the motor. It will start smelling aweful and then make this weird slowing down sound and croak.

Should I use a light weight fusible cut on bias to stabilize the fabric. Or is it operator error? My machine is 3 needle. I am using left and right needle. Should I use more narrow?

Question Please...I have Janome Cpver Pro 2000XP Just purchased double binder from Ali EXpress.... unfortunately I cannot get attachment close enough to the holes to attach unless it covers up the foot itself. Can you recommend what is missing with my foot.? I think it needs the plate that attaches to machine then attachment is attached to the base plate. What about do I need a different type of foot to work with the binding attachement.? Now that I purchased foot already. JuditZ

I have the janome coverpro 2000. When I first got it it worked brilliantly, I have used it just a few times and now I keep getting skipped stitches. It is driving me mad! I have tried and tried to get it running properly but it does not want to play ball. I have become very disappointed 😢

The video that accompanied the machine say that i must never turn the wheel backwards to end my stitching and now i cannot get it right to pull the stitches backward, if you understand what i mean. Hello Johanna. I have admired your wealth of knowledge when it comes to coverstitching for quite some time. I have a question that may have a simple answer: In the manual for my Brother 2340 coverstitch machine, it indicates to that the pressure knob for your presser foot should be lowered for thicker fabrics and should be raised for thinner fabrics. This seems counterintuitive to everything I was taught while using a regular sewing machine. Can you share when you raise your pressure knob for your presser foot and when you lower your pressure when using your coverstitch machine? I think my manual may be wrong. Your answer would be greatly appreciated as this has been bothering me for quite some time.
