Shadows Linger is one of the best TBC books

Shadows Linger is my favorite Black Company book. The second is The Silver Spike.

I am just finishing Shadows Linger. It is an excellent book and your review is a very good one.

Literally just finished listening to Shadows Linger 5 mins ago via audiobook. I’ve read Stormlight, Malazan, the First Law, etc (pretty much all the of top 10-15 fantasy series reviewed by KZfaq book reviews’ consensus). Shadows Linger is up there for me in terms of top tier reading experiences. Not necessarily as epic as some books, but the completeness of storytelling is masterful with compelling characters that enthrall you throughout the book and delivers an exciting ending which leaves you feeling like you just finished the most satisfying prologue to an epic fantasy series you’ve ever read. Very underrated book series (at least through 2 books)

I will always admire how in-depth you go and wonderful your summaries are. Truly, you’re setting the standard for most!

First Black Company book I read. Loved how despicable Shed becomes as the book progresses.

The Silver Spike is probably my favourite. I think its because the main characters are the equivalent of what any of us could be in that universe: the lowest class civilians struggling to survive, with some serious character and behaviour flaws (Im looking at you two Tully and Smeds Stahl). They dont have military or magic power, they suffer the consequences of the acts of The Taken, The Empire etc... and yet they stand firm alone against all odds and even improve as persons. Also: Old Man Fish > Raven.

I read the first book and was blown away 30 years ago

And a year later I comment. Black company always read to me like it was meant to be published in weird tales as three or four separate novella. Shadow linger is a morality Play. And it is fantastic The Demi redemption of Marin shed is maybe one of Cook's best literary outings, Tower of fear and the dragon never sleeps not withstanding

Just finished it. Enjoyed this a lot more than Book 1. I'm not in love with the series yet but I'm getting there. Love Elmo.

Great review! I've just finished Shadows Linger and Shed is my absolut favorite character.

I definitely was surprised by how much I liked this one. I think it was here that I decided that Glen Cook can write great character development & atmosphere. Never would have I guessed how much I would like Maroon Shed.

My favorite was Bleak Seasons, do you have a review out on that one? Love Murgen's dark humor...

have you read port of souls ? if you have`nt you should , get a lot of ladies early history !

Sheds revenge segment is very satisfying at first then becomes repugnant, when you see the consequences, just like revenge in real life , interesting characters weak but capable of terrible acts

Man... this book was dark - and in a disturbingly personal manner. I found this review because I'm in the middle of a re-read, and even knowing what happens, I still found myself shaken by some of the things this book. It's not an abstract feeling about the setting - it's the very human decisions that get made, and the horrible consequences of them. I needed a break before diving into the next one.

if you put the series down after the first book , you`re missing some damned good reading !

You need to use the deep, brooding voice more often. Also, if you can put that voice change in a box I want one.
