Although there is more and more recognition of compelling input as the key to language learning success, the "speak correctly for me now" people still rule the classroom it seems.

I find that going over grammar rules after a lot of input and after noticing most of the rules yourself makes you remember and solidify the rules in your head way more than starting with learning grammar from scratch.

Massive input works. Speaking to a native speaker as much as possible works. (Plus of course supplementary reading and written work).

I am an English teacher as a foreign language in Colombia. A problem here is that tests are made with the purpose of assessing grammar so I have to focus my classes on grammar rules rather than comprehensible input. I've seen that students can learn this way if you encourage speaking using grammar rules

😂😂 I've always been on the edge of waves of the future, so my sudden learning of Russian bodes well for the language. The dearth of teachers? Is an opportunity. I'm 51, I was an entrepreneur, like you, retired..... Once an entrepreneur always an entrepreneur!! I'm gunna stick to Russian and see where it leads. School French and Japanese lead nowhere because it was grammar based. I passed with flying colours could read and write 日本語 poifectly well, but couldn't hold a conversation after 6 yrs including fisrt year Uni. Now I'm doing Russian using visual apps and input method and I'm already thinking in Russian when I see pictures of things I've learnt, after only 6 weeks.

Hi Steve, thanks for sharing. This conference seems very interesting. I looked at the 2016 program guide and it is literally 200 pages! How do you get your head around what sessions are relevant for you?

You just have to select. Some of the presentations and up not being so interesting. I never had and you hear of other presentations that other people went to that you would have liked to have seen.

Hi steve, Did your knowledge of japaense help in your korean studies? Can you make a video on the similarities between the languages?

tree he made this video ages ago. just search on his channel for it. the video is titled Chinese and Japanese compared i think. it also talks about korean.

Yes it helps, as does Chinese. In some ways the Japanese is a source of confusion too, as at times I want to use a Japanese construction rather than a Korean one.

Hi Steve , how can we improve our speaking ? Is reading out loud useful ? Thanks
@llPipexll

by reading out loud, you can improve your pronunciation, but what i recommend to you is to find a native speaker that wants to be your partner, so for example if you are native of russian and you are wanting to learn english, seek someone who would be willing to help you, so you can set something like this: 30 minutes of russian or whatever your language is and 30 minutes of english, that's exactly what i do and also i do shadowing which consists of speaking with yourself and trying to describe a situation or to solve any problem that you have or you might have, so it will help your brain to recognize the english patterns. hope i helped you. by the way english is not my native language, i hope my explanation was helpful to you :D.

Reading out loud may help, but it is hard to keep doing. I suggest you find ways to speak more, and don't worry about your performance.
