You can use a white unglazed tile instead of the dark scratch plate. I picked one up at Lowe’s.

I use sterling acid, and I wipe it with a white paper towel to see red to determine sterling. 🤷‍♀️

My kit does not change colors on cotton at all - it’s a different kit.
