So the guy who was stuck in the Taxi led a property tax revolt in California in the late 1970s. His name was Jarvis. (just a bit of trivia).

The film was written by David and Jerry Zucker, and Jim Abrams. The two Zucker brothers are present, in the shot where one ground crew member asks another, "Hey Larry, where's the forklift?" "Forklift? Over there by the baggage loader." Jim Abrams is the guy who gets knocked off his bicycle, when Rex Cramer is driving with the airline representative to the airport, and we see bizarre events via rear screen projection. :)

Another hidden joke: The three older men, the primary pilot, and the two men at the airport, are rough and tough manly TV actors from American action shows in the 1960s, who were not known for comedy. To see them act so dead-pan serious is especially funny. Captain Over was the lead of the team in the original Mission: Impossible TV show for example. And yes, the co-pilot really is famous American basketball player Kareem Abdul Jabar.

This movie is not just a parody of disaster-type movies at the time, but a movie produced in 1957, "Zero Hour." It is so close, you can watch a KZfaq episode - "Side-by-side" comparison: Zero Hour! (1957) Vs Airplane ... - which makes some of what they parody here much more understandable. It also makes fun of popular movies and commercials at the time, which one can miss if you aren't that old. The opening music and the tail of the plane going through the clouds was a take off of Jaws - the music is unforgettable to anyone who heard it. The tail suggest the shark's fin slicing through the water. The woman not understanding why her husband "never asked for a second cup of coffee at home" was from a coffee commercial, where her coffee was supposed to be not as good as wherever they were when he asked for a second cup. The "war" in this movie was purposely vague but in the '57 movie, it clearly would have meant WWII. The horse in the bed was a take-off of the most iconic scene in the blow-out hit at the time, The Godfather. The gangsters want a Hollywood producer to do them a favor, and when he declines, he wakes up the next morning with the bloody severed head of his prize-wining racehorse next to him. The dance in the bar was meant to parody Saturday Night Fever, with John Travolta in a classic white suit on the disco dance floor. The two girls fighting were girl scouts, and definitely NOT known for bar-fighting.

"Can you fly this plane, and land it?" "Surely you can't be serious." "I am serious... and don't call me Shirley." Classic comedy. Laugh a minute and very quotable. Fun Fact: In a 2008 interview, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar told the story of being on a European flight and asked to sit in an empty seat in the cockpit during takeoff so the crew could say they flew with Roger Murdoch. White-Red Zone Fact: Regarding the argument between announcers concerning the white and red zones at the airport, the producers hired the same voice artists who had made the real-world announcements at Los Angeles International Airport. At the real airport, the white zone is for loading and unloading of passengers only, and there's no stopping in the red zone (except for transit buses). They were also married to each other in real life. Casting Choice Fact: Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker chose actors such as Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, and Leslie Nielsen because of their reputation for playing no-nonsense characters. Until this film, these actors had not done comedy, so their "straight-arrow" personas and line delivery made the satire in the movie all the more poignant and funny. Bridges was initially reluctant to take his role in the movie, but his sons persuaded him to do it.

Many of the actors in this film were already very famous for doing non-comedic roles so it was a shock to see them do humor. The woman in the coffee skit was well known for a famous coffee ad. The ad is here on YT, look for " 1970s Yuban Commercial "

I don't think I've seen a reactor laugh as much to this movie as you guys did. My favorite reaction was at 20:40. Many of the jokes we references to 70s and 80s popular culture. That line about the second cup of coffee was a reference to a well known coffee ad campaign of the time. The joke about all the people handing out flowers at the airport was a reference to the Hare Krishnas, who were known during the 70s for handing out flowers at airports and other public buildings. Btw, the two airport workers who sent the airplane crashing into airport near the beginning of the movie were played by Jerry and David Zucker, two of the writers and directors of the movie, and their mother Charlotte played the lady putting on her makeup. If you didn't watch the ending credits you may have missed the post credit scene. It was the guy waiting in the taxi, looking at his watch and saying "I'll give him five more minutes, then I'm leaving." This movie and Ferris Bueller's Day Off were the first two movies I've seen that had post credit scenes.

I’m seeing a huge trend of younger people finally discovering the treasure trove of funny movies of the past. Back when people made fun of each other and everyone laughed and never had to worry about offending others.

The f irst scene with the airplane in the clouds is a spoof of the movie Jaws. That movie is about shark attack on the beach. It's a horror movie with intense scenes. You would see the fins above the water before the shark attacks the swimmers. The movie was also directed by Steven Spielsberg. He also directed Poltergist which is a story about ghosts haunting a family. But if you want a funny movie written by Steven Spielsberg, try The Goonies. It's about a bunch of kids trying to find treasure on a pirate ship. The line "Win for the Zipper" is in reference to George Gipp, a college football player. He said "Win one for the Gipper" when he couldn't play. It was made famous in a movie with Ronald Reagan, actor then and became US President, saying those lines.

That music was from "Jaws" and that's why the planes looked like a shark fin. Have you watched "Planes, Trains and Automobiles"? It's another one that should appeal to your sense of humor. Good job.

The glue used for assembling packaged styrene plastic scale models used to contain nasty solvents that far too many young people abused for the effects obtained by "sniffing" it. By the time of this movie most had been pulled from the market and replaced with less effective alternatives that did not contain those chemicals, but the epidemic of abuse was still within cultural memory.

Fun Fact on the Saturday Night Fever spoof: While he was doing Airplane, Actor Robert Hays (Ted Striker) was also doing a short lived sitcom called Angie and his Angie Co-Star Donna Pescow was in Saturday Night Fever. There is a sequel to Airplane called Airplane 2 The Sequel which is also worth a look just to see William Shatner steal the show.

Really fun reaction! A sequel came out 2 years later called "Airplane II: The Sequel". It is not as beloved as the first movie, but it's still a funny movie.

This movie is, in fact; the reason why Leslie Nielsen got the role in _Police Squad_ and the _Naked Gun_ movies. The writer/director team loved his ability to deliver lines in a serious deadpan way, amidst the silliest, most rib-cracking jokes, so they hired him again for the main character in those projects. In an interview he once said something along the lines of, "I've been delivering very silly dialogue with a serious face for decades. The only difference now is that it's very silly _on purpose."_ The whole _"Jim never has a second cup of coffee at home"_ sequence, apart from being funny in itself, was also a reference to a series of commercials for Yuban Coffee that ran in the 70s, aimed at instilling insecurity in housewives, along the lines of "If your man doesn't guzzle coffee like there's no tomorrow, then you are using the _wrong brand_ and are a _bad wife!"._ They even got the exact same actress from the commercials to play the role. When Dr. Womack talks about George Zipp, that's a parody of a scene from _Knute Rockne: All American_ where a hospitalised college football player called George Gipp (played by Ronald Reagan) exhorts his team to play in his absence and "win one for the Gipper". That movie was set at the University of Notre Dame, which is why the "Notre Dame Fighting Song" is playing in this scene. While this movie parodies the _Airport_ disaster movies from the 70s in general, it's also a direct spoof of the much earlier movie _Zero Hour!_ from which it gets its plot and half the dialogue. The writer/director team basically went through that film scene-by-scene and tried to make every single one into a joke, and follow every serious line from that movie with a punch-line in this one. This includes the fact they hired Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to play the co-pilot, because the co-pilot in _Zero Hour!_ was played by a well-known former football player turned actor.

This is possibly my favorite movie so I could tell you so many little bits of trivia and etc. For instance: 11:05 the man who wrote the song was a friend of the producers he let them use it for free. After he saw the movie he was furious, he wrote it for a friend's wedding and felt like they ruined the song for using it like that.

I watched this movie in the CARSHOP waiting room as my car was repaired....so many people also were in the waiting room....BUT I was the ONLY one laughing so hard alone, they thought I was crazy...then they ALL started laughing! :D I never forget this time! :D

If you go past the credits they show the guy still in the taxi. His last words are: well I'll just give him 5 more minutes. My top five comedies of all time.

About 5 years before the movie, there was an actual food poisoning incident on a Japan Airlines plane. Contaminated ham omelets caused nearly 200 people to get sick. By luck the pilots’ biological clocks were still on Alaska time and they had ordered steak dinners instead, so they were able to make an emergency landing. The incident resulted in recommendations that pilots and passengers be served different meals.

Here's a bit of trivia I bet no one else knows. The girl scout with the blonde pigtails played the salt vampire in the original Star Trek. And was also one of the background Talosians in the first pilot.

In the first scene with the plane in the clouds, the background music was that of Jaws.

There were some moments parodying scenes from famous movies: obviously the bar scene with the disco music and dancing was a take-off on Saturday Night Fever, a movie which was only three years old at the time, but there are at least three other segments parodying classic older movies. The scene where the girl is running alongside the plane waving to her boyfriend is based on a famous scene from Love in the Afternoon (where Audrey Hepburn runs alongside a departing train waving to Gary Cooper). The scene on the beach where the wave crashes over the two lovers makes fun of an even more famous scene from From Here to Eternity. And the dialogue about "win just one for the Zipper" is an echo of extremely famous dialogue from Knute Rockne, All American.

So brilliantly ridiculous. The funniest film ever.

Lesie Nielsen also starred in a serious science fiction film called "Forbidden Planet". It's old, and not like his later works, but it's still pretty good.

This is a spoof of some airplane disaster movies that were made in the 70’s, they were called Airport, Airport 75, Airport 77 and Airport 79 the concorde. The couple making the airport announcements at the beginning apparently worked at Los Angeles airport doing them and were a couple in real life. The black men were speaking Jive which is a slang language created by jazz musicians back in the 1930’s and it became popular again in the 70’s. The white last who spoke jive to them was best known for playing the mom in the 1950’s tv show called leave it to beaver which was known for being very wholesome which is why it was so funny to see her talking like that. The two girls fighting were supposed to be Girl Scouts, it’s a group in the U.S for young girls to learn different skills and they are known to sell cookies to raise money. Back in those days it was very common that kids would be invited up into the cockpit and the pilot would usually give them a pin that looked like airplane wings, I did it when I was a little boy in the 70’s. The lady who was shocked that her husband had a second cup of coffee was a reference to a famous coffee commercial from the 70’s where wives would always be shocked when their husbands would ask for a second cup when they were at a friends house or a restaurant.

I was given a nice hardback copy of the Bagavad Gita by Hare Krishnas in the Denver airport while on layover. Then I gave them my last $5 out of guilt. I was young. Before 9/11, 2001 anyone could go inside and watch your party's takeoff or arrival. You could walk them right to the gate. Or wait for them at their gate. Now you have to go meet them at baggage claim, and proselytizing is not allowed in airports. AFAIK.

That was not an eagle; it was a vulture. They show up when they sense death. I happen to think this is the best movie of its kind, but The Naked Gun series is good.

There is a lesser known gem from the same guys who made this and the Naked Gun movies…a television series called POLICE SQUAD, which was where the Naked Gun movies started from. Same type of humor….you should check it out.

I learned not long ago that the "Jim never has a second cup of coffee" woman was the same one from the commercial being referenced. And I was around when those commercials were on in the late 70s. I remember them. But I never remembered, even after 100 viewings of Airplane!, that it was the same woman. Fun fact -- it was her (the actor's) idea to have people lining up to beat her.

You will love the Naked Gun movies. It's the same type of comedy. Very funny.

Try Top Secret, with Val Kilmer; it was made by the same guys. More Naked Gun/ Airplane humor at it's best. Gotta love the Zucker Brothers! After watching Die Hard and Lethal Weapon 1 & 2, try National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon 1 as well - it's not quite up to the same level as the Zucker Brothers, but overall... it works. AND Baseketball, now that I think about it - complete nonsense in the best possible way. I think that one was made by Jim Abrams, who was one of the partners of the Zucker Brothers, although in that one he shares credit with the creators of South Park, who also star.

Most of the '70s _Airport_ movies had a "hysterical passenger" who got slapped for comedy or drama; the nun with the guitar is taken directly from _Airport 1975,_ only the nun, played by iconic singer Helen Reddy, did the singing to the poor sick kid. But what's really astonishing is how much has changed since 1980. People used to be able to smoke _anywhere._ Religious groups are no longer allowed to solicit donations but they _can_ maintain a kiosk or counter at airports. And of course passenger and crew information is _never_ given out to stalker ex-boyfriends, even if they're the hero of the movie! 19:14 Vulture. They are carrion eaters, known for circling over dying animals.

This movie is a parody of an air-disaster movie called "Airport". In the original movie, the girl with the medical condition is played by Linda Blair, the girl from "The Exorcist". I just saw your reaction to that movie, so a bit of a coincidence...

A lil pop culture... the great Sigourney Weaver(ghost busters,alien franchise...) auditioned for the part of Elaine but was passed over because they didn't like the way she delivered the "set on your face and riggle" line.

This movie is amazing. It’s still so funny even if you don’t get the topical references… and there are a TON… 1) Religious proselytizing in airports used to be a thing. 2) Not so much topical… just something few people know… the airport PA announcers arguing are actual married airport PA announcers at LAX in real life. 3) A lot of folks don’t know that smoking used to be allowed on planes. The joke is silly either way, with the smoking ticket, but it loses a bit since there’s no such thing as a smoking ticket now. 4) I think The Mayo Clinic goes over some folks’ heads too. It’s a real clinic and quite famous, but it used to be more famous back then. So, the mayonnaise gag is hysterical. 5) The airplane mechanic is JJ Walker… very famous back then. It’s a great cameo. 6) A lot of folks also don’t recognize Kareem Abdul Jabbar now. Everyone would’ve known him back then. 7) A lot of folks also don’t know a lot of the actors, like Peter Graves, Robert Stack and others. These were all very serious actors at the time. Even Leslie Neilsen was a serious actor then… this was his first comedic role. That made this movie even funnier… it’s loaded with purely serious actors. 8) Most viewers today also don’t recognize Ethel Merman. The soldier thinks he’s Ethel Merman… that actually IS Ethel Merman. 9) The woman’s inner monologue about her husband drinking coffee is mocking a well known commercial from the time. 10) The old woman speaking jive is most well known for role as a perfect little happy homemaker in a 1960s sitcom. Seeing her in a role like this is hysterical. 11) Tupperware parties were a big deal back then. Her having one with the people she’s sent to help is stupidly funny. And all of this is just off the top of my head. I’ve probably missed about 10 other topical references. Oh, like a microwave used to be called a “radar range” by some people back then. And their absurd use of green screen technology for when the captain is driving to the airport is comical because green screen was relatively new at the time - it was established enough that people knew about it, so they understood what was going on in the scene, but relatively new enough that it felt novel and interesting… so for someone to use it in such an absurd way at that time was great fun. So, just consider that… look at how funny you (and many others) thought this movie was, and then think about the fact that you might not have even caught about half the jokes. This was just wildly hysterical at the time. Best example I can think of is Barbara Billingsley (the old woman speaking jive)… you probably got a nice little chuckle seeing this old lady speak like that, but for those of us who grew up watching Leave It To Beaver (that 50s/60s sitcom she was in), omg, this scene was uproariously funny… June Cleaver (her character name in Leave It To Beaver) doing jive. Outrageously funny. Point is… people love this movie today, and it was 10x funnier back when it came out. SOOOOO many topical jokes have lost their punch since then. And it’s STILL very funny.

Funny thing is, the airplane sounds like it has propellers spinning to fly the plane when really it has the jet engines of a commercial passenger airplane.

Many of the jokes are referencing commercials or other pop culture from that time period that most people today would not have seen or heard of. It just shows how great the movie is - that you can appreciate the comedy 43 years later despite being from a different country and culture. The story is simple and relatable. The jokes are boss level.

There was a commercial at the time where a man at a restaurant asks for a second cup of coffee and his wife thinks about how he never has a second cup at home and then the commercial says That’s because it’s Maxwell House (or whatever coffee).

And Leon's getting laaaarger.
